I try to tell my employees again and again that social media is not your friend. Of the ones who have done something sufficiently stupid for me to call them in, they're almost always in their 20s/early 30s. What's worse is, most of them are contrite, but a handful of them have had a "What's the big deal/fReEdoM oF SpEeCH" attitude.

Well… how many times was the black girl late for work, something like 400+, and got fired and she sued for racial discrimination and won $10.5 million.

“free to do me” is the new mantra

Freedom of speech is fine, as long as you realize the other side is free as well. For example, feel free to talk about your employer if you wish, but, they are free to fire your azz too if they wish.

Right. You have freedom of speech. You do not have the right to disrupt or damage your employer's business with your speech. Would be like the person taking orders at McDonald's saying "Our food sucks" and telling people they shouldn't eat there, and then saying it's their first amendment right.

If I was in charge, I'd have a letter of recommendation waiting on his next job application stating "I'm sure you as a potential employer will come to appreciate Mr. Retner's talents as much as I have". Give that dubmass the opportunity to take the letter and resign quietly or be fired. He's totally not mature enough to be in touch with the scope of his job.

Matt Luke's wife was at MSU in the late 90s and our kids have run in the same circles (before he was fired and went to UGA)....I asked her once how did her allegiance work with her husband being the HC at UM.....she listened to the same smart person you mentioned...

I’ve been told otherwise. He just put his name on the football field and jerseys. Where do you get info that a billionaire mega athletic donor doesn’t care about their football team?

I have several large clients I deal with in Little Rock and northwest AR. Tyson has naming rights but they and other large businesses in the state aren’t invested in football and NIL like some think.

I am a proud Mississippi State University graduate and hate all things UM, BUT UM is my biggest client. So, guess what? Every week when I am in Oxford, I kiss the ring and talk about how awesome UM campus is. I still hate them and pull against them, but as long as those checks keep coming, I will find ways to praise them to keep them happy.

This is the way. I don't understand anyone who openly criticizes or roots against their own client.

I remember chemistry professor Dr. McMahan showing up in full Auburn gear on the Friday before Auburn game. Annoying but funny. I don't think it's appropriate for a marketing or athletic department or spirit department employee to do it, though.

Yeah, freedom of speech and freedom from consequences are two different things and this mistake is made too often. If the government didn't show up at your door and put you in jail for your comments, congrats, you have freedom of speech. If your employer fires you for conduct detrimental, well, those are consequences for your actions.

I go back to the Jimmy Kimmel Charlie Kirk comments. ABC suspended him and the outcry was "FREEDOM OF SPEECH." He had freedom of speech....nobody from the gov't showed up and put him in jail. But that's where it ends.
