With week 1 over and we get a look at what teams look like - even tho there’s still a long way to go, who are the contenders?

My initial list:

East:
Tarboro
Warren County (according to HSOT they will win the east)
Edenton Homes
East Bladen

West:
Starmount
Corvian
Mitchell
East Wilkes
Murphy

What’s everyone else’s thoughts?

I agree with your list. I think Mitchell is gonna make some noise in the West come playoff time also. And I'm sure some will probably disagree, but I think the East will be competitive this year. Highschool ot picked Warren county to beat Tarboro.

I heard this was the best team Robby Priest has had at East Bladen. The game against Whiteville next Friday will be a big one.

I know other places have Warren County over Tarboro but I will have to see it to believe it lol

I have a ton of respect for the Tarboro program at what's been built. I have watched multiple state champ games of yalls in person and love that T offense. I also make a habit to stop at the tarboro Bojangles on my way to the OBX most years!

Starmount getting the W over M Airy was huge, I think Corvian is probably loaded with tons of speed and will be hard to beat. Tarboro is the team to beat based on the past and overall state calibar programs. The East and West will have some great playoff games in the 2nd/3rd/4th rounds.

The guy at Warren County has done a good job of building them up. There's a good chance they could have home field advantage this year as well, because their schedule isn't the strongest and I believe it's a good chance they run the table. With that said, I still have a hard time seeing them beat us.

I cannot ever remember them having this much hype. They were mouthy two years ago, and that didn't last long. 70-0. You would think they'd come in a little more humble last year but they didn't, 40-0. Let's see if they do much talking this year if we end up matching up.

Knowing that fanbase, I can promise they'll definitely do some talking IF we matchup.

I would have Corvian over Tarboro. I was more thinking having Warren County over Tarboro and not having Murphy in the top 10 is a joke

Warren County fan here. We are very good. Most of our best players are now Seniors so this is our best shot. But I still think you have to make Tarboro the favorite in the East based on the excellence of the program. We have a lot of respect for them and what they have done, especially as a traditional public school. I hope we see them in December.

We'll get to see what kind of team Murphy has this year on Friday when they play East Surry. They didn't look the best against a good 5A Franklin team. However, it was the first game of the year. They had a bye week last week, so they should be fresh and ready come Friday. Starmount took it to East so if Murphy is what everyone expected they would be, I would think we should see a similar game Friday. Looking at their schedule if they don't win this week, they could start the season 0-4.

SMC seems down overall this year, so Murphy should still be the favorite to win conference.

Tarboro deserves the right to be number 1 until someone else shows us that they are not. I am very curious about murphy this year and we will get to see what that looks like this Friday when they play East Surry. If murphy wins that game by 21 plus we will know they are still in the mix!

If Corvian puts up a close game this Friday everyone better watch out.

Tarboro gotta worry about getting through the east first. This year the east will be competitive probably the most competitive it will be under current realignment

Don’t get too caught up in score comparisons this week with East Surry. Starmount and ES head coaches are brothers and older brother called off the dogs at 43-6 instead of embarrassing his little brother. What will be telling is how Murphy looks against a team they should beat vs just the final point spread.

I had high hopes for Starmount this year but after a couple of scrimmages and then the Mt Airy game I had my concerns. This past Friday they took a huge step in the right direction. Scary thing is, I think they've just scratched the surface on the team they could be. I can see certain things starting to come together. I'm thinking their best lineman will be back either this week or the following as well.

My main point was if Murphy can't beat East Surry by two scores, I don't see them as a top 10 (or even a contender) this year. I know there's still a lot of ball left to play and the season just started, but we should know more by Saturday morning.

East isn't a top team so if Murphy wants to compete with Starmount, Tarboro, Corvian this year, they better handle business Friday. If they start 0-4, and most of the SMC right now is 0-2, Murphy's RPI isn't going to be good. They may be on the road the whole playoffs.

If Clem doesn't play, I'm not sure it matters if it is only 35-24 or something. Watching ES "attempt" to tackle last week, if Clem plays, he will go for 200 and 4tds.
