It doesn't matter how many other schools he can go to. It is as simple as he didn't put his name in at the time because his eligibility was exhausted at the time. How was he supposed to predict the future? I don't see how the SEC's rule can hold up under that specific circumstance.
Obviously you and me and other people see how shaky thin this case is once presented from Mark Mitchell getting unfairly screwed.

the UNC guys keeps operating off of signatures and deals made months/ years ago like that even matters in the age of lawyers, when if you just barely look at you can tell it would be viewed on the merits of being personal attack/ taking money from Mark Mitchell

If Xaivian Lee Plays one game for Gonzaga then Mitchell is playing for us

The SEC has wanted to screw Kentucky basketball for a long time. After owning the league for 60-70 years the leadership and powers that be have been desperate for the SEC to be taken seriously in basketball and not be propped up by one team.

I’ve never understood the whole cheering on your own conference mentality BS and today is a shining example why. Screw the SEC.

This isn't the NCAA. Mitchell was on track to beat the NCAA.

This is the SEC. And more specifically, this is the President of the University of Kentucky voting to reaffirm the transfer rule. That's it. That's the nail in the coffin nobody could have seen coming.
Since when did presidents get to decide where players make money at? I didn’t know they ran player choice?

The SEC is allowed to make their own rules and enforce their rules. Since their rules don't prevent Mark from going to a couple hundred other schools, it's likely not going to qualify for an Anti-Trust hail Mary by a lawyer.

This is totally different than the NCAA which can make a guy ineligible from all the D1 schools, and who just passed a new rule that seems to punitively impact Mark's specific class. There are legitimate grounds to believe the NCAA will ultimately lose their fights against Mark's class. It just might take months.
If that’s the case they have no reason to prevent him from going to an SEC school either. You can’t say you can go anywhere, but these 16 schools.

Because literally thousands of players, across every NCAA sport, in Mark's class chose to put their name in the portal last spring. He could have. He chose not to. And now the UK President ruined any chance Mark had of playing at UK.
Thousands with eligibility that he didn’t have until after the portal closed. Again.

There were plenty of reasons. The media had been talking for months about an impending rules change. It's why thousands of college athletes entered their respective sports' transfer portals last spring when they had no eligibility left. If Mitchell wasn't paying attention, then his agent should have advised him to. That's an agent's job.

But Mitchell didn't choose a good agent did he? No, he hired his brother to be his agent. And his brother never advised him to enter the portal like Seth Trimble's agent did, or Aberdeen's agent did, or countless others. So here we are.
I guarantee you can’t find 1000’s of 5th year players who are in the portal for this year before the 5th year was approved.

Lots of seniors entered the portal in anticipation of a 5-for-5 eligibility fight. Mitchell has only himself to blame for that.

UK voted for this rule in the SEC. They empowered Sankey to enforce it. They just recommitted their support for Sankey to enforce it.

Mitchell's best option now is go to a non SEC school. He's got his TRO. He's temporarily eligible. He can't return to Mizzou bc they are full. He's not going to play at UK without UK suffering the penalties outlined in the SEC memo.
Not sure where you get the idea that it’s a ruling because it’s an SEC Rule that was always in place

LOL @ this douchebag coming over to our board to tell us Mitchell should have been able to read the future and its his fault. **** off back to your board dork.
This is not Mitchell’s fault. It’s Pope’s fault. Mark Pope New full wheel the SEC Rule and now he’s got the rest of the SEC on us like they are LSU.

Yeah, you sound devastated! But, I’m sure you will recover just fine once everything becomes official, right?

Meh, UK would beat your cheat’s *** even without Mitchell.

There's no such thing as illegally entering the portal. The portal is just a database. Players with expired eligibility have been entering it the past couple of years in hopes of getting more eligibility through lawsuits or NCAA rules changes.
It is a database ran by the NCAA also. So they could easily deny anyone without actual eligibility and have a rule in place for that.

It won’t be that easy. Sometimes you lure in the big bad wolf to set him up for later.

So it wasn't really about being in an NBA summer league, but because he changed teams without using the portal? Them's the rules.
No he didnt know he would be eligible, what possible reason would he HAVE to enter under the circumstances he found himself. If I was him I would take them to coirt as the " rule" was based on assumptions that no longer exist.

While everyone is defending a player because they want him on THEIR team, under the old rules he wouldn't have been eligible and he should stick to that. Otherwise, he's just perverting the rules, contributing to the collapse of the system. The system needs to be fixed NOW, and allowing these players back isn't the way to go about it. You can like a player (I like him) and see that what's happening in the grand scheme is just wrong.

Consider how many NCAA D1 sports there are for Men and Women. Over 190,000 student athletes compete in NCAA D1 sports in a given academic year.
I’m talking about basketball only, even if you include every other sport I bet you can’t find many players who competed 4 years without medical or redshirts that entered it.

Conferences are divisions of the ncaa...and the ncaa is under court order to comply with the courts tro. They cant be separated from one another to suit the sec latest wim.

At least thats how I see this.

Now, if the big conferences had left the ncaa and went on their own or formed a new version of the ncaa, prior to these court orders, I think they could make their own rules. For now, conferences are part of the ncaa.....

Exactly. Basketball is a NCAA sport. Sec can try to do their punishments but if he is cleared by the ncaa then he can play and we can compete in the tourney. If Sankey wants to punish Kentucky or anyone else he can try and it will be held up in court I’d imagine.

The sec transfer rule also can be exempt by Sankey. Since the TRO reopened the portal that can be easily used as the real portal window. Also Mitchell can argue he didn’t enter initially because he was going to return to Mizzou if 5 for 5 passed but they instead filled his spot leaving him no other option after the fact. I believe Kentucky has already gotten the transfer approved as long as the TRO holds up. No way they had zero contingencies in place for a rule they knew before he committed.

This is what I'm hoping as well. Surely they were always going to fight this. If they don't then I couldn't understand even taking him in the first place. I just hope he doesn't get spooked and end up at Louisville or someone we play this year. Surely if that were to happen the basketball gods would at least grant us an injury free season. Right? They wouldn't be that cruel would they????

The pathetic part here is that two weeks ago Mitchell wasnt even on the radar and the team was filled out and just fine but now if he doesn’t play at UK, a handful of insufferable jerks will go right back to saying the season is going to suk, Pope suks, my dog ate my homework blah blah blah, etc.
I wouldn’t say the roster was just fine. Without Mitchell our 4s are lacking badly

You would think Pope would’ve known about this, or at least spoken to the league about this b fore he took his commitment.
He wss supposed to know, that on August 26th, the SEC would do this?
Up until last night, Mitchell was good.
Are you saying you would have told Mitchell to kick rocks if he wanted to come here? Yeah right.
Might as well blame Mark Pope for the hurricane that hit Hawaii while you're at it.

Holy sh*t, we have a uNC fan in here talking about following the rules. Are you kidding me right now?
I'll just start out with "wheels for heels" and go from there.
I certainly don't expect anyone from AFAM-U to understand anything that must be read.

Did the rule go into effect before Mitchell committed to UK or after? If it was after, then there are now 2 rulings after the fact that will screw him out of playing for the team he wants to play for. These rules should have been announced PRIOR to the portal opening and PRIOR to the 2022 class believing they had no eligibility thus not entering the portal.

I want to see how that holds up in court. "But Your Honor, the media was talking about a rules change," so his client should have known what that would entail.
