The SEC presidents and ADs start a 2 day meeting in B'ham tomorrow. This has been scheduled for a long time. But, after a zoom meeting today, they put out the below statement.

The meeting might be very awkward for LSU's president and AD:

Does the SEC have precedent over a judge’s ruling?
Just because a judge has ruled a player eligible, doesn’t mean a school has to take them. There are many a player who dreamed of playing for LSU but were never afforded the opportunity. They can simply do what TT eventually did with Sorsby and say you aren’t welcome here.

I get the impression that lsu and especially Kiffin want all the smoke that comes with this...
If rhese players are declared eligible by a judge then there is nothing the SEC can really do about and these schools know it. Is it a bad look for lsu? Yes. Do they care? No.
As om likes to say all the damn time, all publicity is good publicity.

How wild would it be if LSU backs down, and the players sign with Texas Tech?

It’s a club, you join voluntarily. Of you don’t want to play by their rules, leave the club. So far, no organization has been willing to stand on that.
The NCAA is forbidden from taking any adverse action agsinst the players or the school they sign with. The SEC may have a little more leeway since the players could just find a school in another conference ...but I don't think the SEC can force LSU to drop them. They may have to convince the President its best for the conference, then have the AD break the news to Lane

If only there were some way this could have all been avoided by the ncaa not unreasonably excluding 1 class & 1 class only from the 5-year rule and doing it before players signed pro contracts.

I don't think it's where players previously played that has blurred the lines between college and pro... I think it's more the millions of dollars they're receiving while "in school" that's making it tough to tell the difference.
They’re gonna try to stuff that toothpaste back in the tube. Good luck.

Can not un-ring the bell. These players in college are really trying their hardest to milk every penny they can. And in the process totally ruin college athletics. I wish everyone would quit buying tickets to games, quit watching games on tv and fans quit being stupid enough to be fleeced as giving to pay for these players. The implosion of college athletics can not happen fast enough.

The SEC is going to move to its own governance model. That avoids anti trust but also means it has to have its own championship bc you can’t compete against leagues with loser rules than you

All it takes is the right judge and that player can get in. It's gotten that crazy. The courts are governing college sports not the NCAA.

Ok, so they wrote a letter. Are they going to actually do anything to stop it before Kiffen fields a complete team with former NFL players?

Judges are out of control all over this country. Who made them kings ? Why does the NCAA have to do as they say ? I guess rules are not a thing anymore. Ruining sports across the board
Because the guise of public education is still tied up in collegiate athletics.

Remove education from the equation and the problems begin to resolve themselves quickly.

Nobody really wants this, though. Coupling it through the school is what fuels fandom. If we wanted pro ball, we'll watch the NFL.

I have zero idea why so many of you want to push this employment narrative. It's not good.

All pushes towards the schools paying the players have been disastrous. NIL should have been contained to private entities since the the beginning. Really since the 80s.

It’s wild the sec came out with a statement totally misrepresenting the situation. These players didn’t choose to go pro. They thought that was their only option.
I think I agree with you.

On the one hand, I do not believe any of the class of '22 players have a right to an extra year.

But, OTOH, if a court is going to give them an extra year, then you have to forgive the fact they tried to go pro, likely did not maintain their required academic status, received money from unallowed sources, etc. They likely would not have done all that if they were given an extra college year.

I think this inta-conference transfer rule is inapplicable as well. They are not transferring from UMiss; they are transferring from the NFL. You cannot say their college career is over, then double back and say they are still on the roster of their old school.

This might be the best thing that could happen right now to force action. All of us have been screaming that this is bad for the game, and it is. The positive is that it may be so bad that it forces the leagues to make changes quickly. We may get somewhat back to the college football that we all know and love sooner rather than later because of all this nonsense.

Correct. Zero chance Harris signs UDFA if he could have made $2 mill in college

Exactly. Could have easily been avoided.
Well, could have easily been avoided on 2 fronts. 1. The NCAA could have included the 2022 from the jump or 2. Judge Sweeney could have ruled that the NCAA has the right to determine eligibility rules for college athletics. But no, of course we have to have this insanity. NCAA is inept but courts WANT to make a mess of all this. That much is pretty obvious.

Lets not pile on judge Sweeney. There are at least 17 different cases currently pending relating to the new 5-for-5 rule, and more will likely be filed since Sweeney's PI was stayed.

The NCAA appears to even be winning some of these cases.

How can the SEC stand on that and not the NCAA which is also a voluntary organization.

Nothing is preventing another organization for developing as an alternative path for colleges that I’m aware of.

You folks that think this is going to force someone's hand do not understand the situation. Neither does the SEC. That's not what this is about.

The 'change' you want forced does nothing but push college ball closer to pro ball, which is a bad thing.

Because the conferences provide competition with each other If they each govern differently to some degree. The NCAA as a whole has no competition.
