With the start of fall classes, we've finally got an updated roster to work with for the men's program:

Men's Wrestling 2026-27 - Iowa Hawkeyes Athletics - Official Athletics Website

I've confirmed each of the following absences/additions from last year's roster - including a last-minute Class of 2026 recruiting add in 4x Iowa state placer Michael Ryan (Mount Vernon):

Absences

133/141 – Jace Rhodes (5th)

174 – Ty Miller (2nd)

197 – Jake Howell (3rd)

285 – Ray Griffin (3rd) *JUCO commit from this May

Additions

133 – Ryan Crookham (5th) *Lehigh transfer

149 – Landen Davis (1st), Greyson Pettit (1st)

149/157 – Bobby Duffy (1st), Michael Ryan (1st)

165 – Carter Schubert (4th) *Oklahoma transfer, CJ Torres (2nd) *2025 greyshirt

197 – David Calkins (1st)

285 – Michael Mocco (1st)

In terms of eligibility notes, 2025 commit/greyshirt CJ Torres will be considered a '2nd year' athlete based on the new age-based rules. Meanwhile, Ryan Crookham could conceivably receive an additional medical redshirt year if he elects to go by the old eligibility rules, but the Iowa spokesperson I talked with did not know if Crookham has/will choose to do so.

If I counted correctly the roster is right at 30. Have to wonder if Iowa is living by the intent of the 30 man roster limits where other universities aggressively grand fathered their rosters?? I wonder where Oklahoma State's roster sits right now?

Hopefully Crookham stays with the HWC at 65kg if he doesn't pursue additional eligibility, but it opens the door for Paul Kenny to start day 1 next year.

What does aggressively grandfathered mean?
What I mean by that is when the court ruling came down that laid an injunction down that they couldn't implement the 30 man roster limit and cut existing roster members for that reason or least didn't have to; there wasn't really clear guidance put out there. So was it possible to designate wrestlers that clearly weren't going to be cut as grandfathered in there by saving their roster slots for future years.

For example, could Iowa have designated some of their younger guys with potential as being vulnerable to being cut (even though they wouldn't have been) such as Kale Voinovich. Kale Voinovich wouldn't count for his remaining years.

To my knowledge there wasn't anything in place to stop you from doing this.

When did the news drop about Michael Ryan committing to Iowa? Not a peep in the news.
As best as I can tell - and it's my job to follow this stuff 😅 - the news only 'dropped' as of today when I noticed his name on the official roster.

I can't find a single social media post about the commitment - from Ryan or otherwise 🤷‍♂️

The roster weights aren't generally accurate enough to make this call.

But it would be very BAU for Iowa to not at all plan for this. LOL
I think Williams said this summer he was going 49 around the time of his recommit. No insider but guessing it was discussed and agreed on during recommit talks. Just hope it is decided early, we need both at optimal weight.

Hard to think after watching Williams compete that anyone thought he was big enough for 157.

"Deciding early" has not always shown to be in TNT's skill set.
