Last night was mild and 75 degrees yet game after game was delayed by players cramping up constantly. I personally blame the lack of doubles guys aren’t in playing shape in week 1 and fatigue cause cramps.

Cramping happens at all levels of football the 1st week. These kids are not put through the same conditioning as back in the day. There are no more 2 a days heavy conditioning practices any more. That includes college and the nfl. Where the same thing will happen week 1

ESL cramped during the Fenwick game when it was 10 degrees.

Take an IV.....drink a ton of liquid IV if you can't stomach pickle juice, and take Midol!

Im not talking the 80s I played in early 2000s. When you were still able to condition kids. Yes of course there is always cramping but not like today. 7 on 7 doesn't exhaust the body like a full contact practice plus conditioning.

Some teams have mastered the art of having kids go down with a "cramp" as a way to garner an additional timeout (or two).
Yes, but last night it was kids going down every other play in some games.

1996 opening game we played at Glenbard West in mid afternoon it was 90 degrees and humid, 2 kids total between the teams got cramps, today that would be 3.5 hour game with all the stoppages for cramps.
That Hitters team was pretty bad. Light work for the Tigers that day at Duchon

It seems that all of us old folks know about the merits of pickle juice and it remains a secret to the younguns.

Has to be nutrition. In the last few years I’ve been seeing cramping in October. Insane. This never used to be an issue.

What contributes to cramps in football?

“Game intensity is difficult to reproduce in practice. A player might be “in shape” but not conditioned for repeated 5–8 second all-out efforts followed by short recoveries for several quarters.

Heat makes this worse because the body works harder and fatigue develops faster.

So if someone consistently cramps late in games, I’d look at football-specific conditioning and workload in addition to hydration and sodium.”

Your question should've been "what is contributing to football cramps being more prevalant in high school football today as opposed to 20 years ago. Or in the case of @McCaravan 75 years ago. Ha. Just messing.

Oh wow! 😂. 75? I wish! I'd be retired and living in Florida watching IMG 😂. Would also explain why my knees and back hurt every morning! No I'm still in the 50's and will be for a good amount of time. Will be retiring sooner then later though and warmer climates are not far behind!

I did ask that to start and it replied with there is no data that shows there are more cramps…probably not a stat people keep.

My two cents…I think it’s mainly because kids bodies are pushed as hard as they used to be and the first game shocks the body
