Democrats are using AI as an excuse to slow the economy down. They don’t want a good economy under Trump and so they will drag their feet and try to regulate as always.

We need more data centers. We also need clear regulations around their impact on public utilities. The public on both sides of the aisle is against them right now. They have a major messaging issue.

My take is that data centers can pay a large amount of property taxes in an area that fund critical local infrastructure. They should not be allowed to pay less for electricity than retail customers. You need to control the noise pollution. You make these things known to the public and you should be able to build again.

Agreed. Most of the issues you bring up have been addressed, but that won’t stop democrats from taking the opportunity to hinder Trump.

China is making a large push to spread data center fear here in the USA to slow us down and Democrats are falling for it, or worse intentionally using it to slow the economy down

Wind turbine farm in my NW Iowa county pays over one third of total county property taxes.

Trump hates wind power but loves data centers.
Once again, picking the winners and losers in our supposed " free market economy.

No money in wind power for trump while the hyperscalers give him huge donations....oligarchy in action.

No, the free market said that wind energy is dumb as ****. It was heavily subsidized. That is not the free market.

Wind energy is stupid.

Oil depletion allowance providing hundreds of billions in tax breaks to oil industry dwarf any govt support wind energy has rec'd.

My provider does not have wind sources...only coal. My cost is .14 kwhr.
Mid- America is across the road .they have tons of wind....their customers pay half....07/ kwhr.

Buffet owns mid- America with Berkshire.
Smart guy.
Wind is now the cheaper option.

And we are treading into FERC timelines for the grid to adopt measures for massive data center hits

Ref FERC

Critical Implementation Timeline
The regulatory deadlines are compressed, moving the power sector at an unprecedented pace: [1, 2, 3]
  • July 20, 2026 (Passed): Grid operators submitted Resource Adequacy reports proving how they will secure enough raw generation to support these 50+ MW loads.
  • August 17, 2026 (Upcoming): The formal 60-day deadline for all six grid operators to submit their final tariff overhauls or legal defenses to FERC.
  • December 31, 2026: Deadline for NERC to submit formal, mandatory reliability and registry standards specifically tailored to managing large computational loads on the bulk power system. [1, 2, 3, 4]

The U.S. crude oil production timeline faces a plateau near 13.5 million to 13.8 million barrels per day through 2026, followed by a final peak near 14 million barrels per day around 2027 as the 20-year shale boom matures, before structural acceleration toward a severe supply deficit accelerates post-2030. If the data center is willing to pay for their construction and some guarantees that utilities and water bills will not go up, I have no problem with them.

they are not a great long term job creator so no need to bend over backwards with tax and utility incentives.

I suppose i get it. People view this as their way to extract revenge against the success of big tech.

disagree

the issue where i work is that data centers are targeting places that have very little development pressure, so they've never had to deal with this stuff...and often have little to no regulation or administrative capacity

people flip out any time there are large developments proposed - warehouses/distribution centers, large residential developments, and now data centers

the potential impacts to utility rates, water usage and noise has just amplified everything a little mroe

I gotta admit, I'm kind of confused. Republicans have the majority in the House and Senate and Trump is in the WhiteHouse. How exactly are the Dems slowing the economy again?

Iran and inflation. Don’t think it’s dems necessarily. It’s fickle and volatile as hell though. Makes me wonder if we are sitting in a house of cards. One dumb misleading news story can tank the entire market, crazy times.

a couple weeks ago an account @semi analysts on x tanked the entire semiconductor market for several days on some made up nonsense (wiped 50 billion out of one hedge fund in two days) lol. It doesn’t take much.

Who said they were slowing the economy.

However, democrats opposing data centers has the potential to slow the economy. They aren’t having any luck yet, but if they get elected you can bet your bottom dollar they will try to regulate. This why you see the hurry under the current admin. That and we want to beat China.

Can you imagine if the retard Kammy was in charge. We would be up the creek without a paddle.

No, no it can’t. The market is very strong right now and will remain that way for a while. Oil prices are the one caveat.

Volatility, the Vix is trading 15, right now, historical average closer to 20. Volatility is low and expected to remain that way over the next month.

Don’t let the noise and fake headlines distract you. The companies are printing money and will be reporting very strong earnings.

DUDE! You absolutely slay me... YOU SAID THE DEMS WERE SLOWING THE ECONOMY.

I'm going to walk you through this SLOWLY... Let's go back, back, back in time to where you were starting this thread. First you picked out a Title for the thread... You went with "Data Center FUD". You with me so far? GREAT... THEN you started typing to start the thread. Still with me? You typed in the first sentence of the thread. OK, here we go... Your first sentence was:

"Democrats are using AI as an excuse to slow the economy down." Fatpiggy IN THIS VERY THREAD.

So you said the Democrats are using AI as an excuse to slow the economy down. That's it... done.

Yes... that's fine. But it brings up my point that Republicans are in charge of everything nationally right now. Still not sure how they are going to slow things down.
So republicans being in charge nationally has exactly what to do with Kathy Hochul imposing a 1 year moratorium on data centers in NY state?
