Penn State legend David Taylor on his Oklahoma State program possibly facing the Lions one day: 'We’ll save one date every year'

Ah, the ever amusing sidebar to this fresh and fabulous competitive dynamic between pupil and mentor: With DT’s two NCs year one, three frosh NCs and 131 points in March, and a measured, intelligent delivery when interviewed, the envy in Iowa over not acting before OKSt’s sugar daddy got involved grows exponentially each day. ;)

It's a reminder of circumstances (national championship dual meet), where (Gallagher-Iba Arena), and when (2017), in further consideration that the mats and maybe their taping was implicated. Haven't heard calls for PSU vs OkSt dual for the 7 some odd years that followed. But now all of a sudden it's embarrassing 🙄.
If we aren't wrestling certain matches because of injuries then I guess we should skip Rutgers match ups (Nolf's kneecap) or season ending cake walks (Starocci's knee) like Edinboro, Buffalo or American. Nagao's injuries were during practice.

I have always felt we should wrestle Okie St. Now that they appear to have stepped up to the challenge I really think we should wrestle them, but in the early part of this run I thought we should have wrestled Cornell. I understand why one did not happen and why the other isn't going to happen.

There is nothing embarrassing about Taylor trying to goad Cael a little bit, and there is nothing embarrassing about PSU wrestling fans thinking we should wrestle OkieSt.

Hell, I think we should also find a way to wrestle VTech.

Well, I believe Coach John Smith mostly said he would love to have more Big Ten teams come to Stillwater.

Where is he talking about non home meets in Stillwater? Why was 2017 in Stillwater the last PSU vs OkSt dual?

Maybe John Smith didn't want to make PSU money by traveling to State College. Maybe Ok St Administration felt travel costs were excessive for a single dual meet weekend of a non-revenue sport.

Furthermore, the revenue sports of men's and women's basketball control the dates for Gallagher-Iba Arena, just like they do for the BJC. Who is DT kidding when he says he's saving a date?
A whole lot of bullshyt in response to my post. I wasn't talking about Smith's take on the Big10 schools or anything else. Smith make the comment about Cael being stingy about his duals when ask a question about wrestling PSU. Smith brought his team east every year. The reason PSU and OkieSt didn't wrestle annually is because the PSU staff does have a plan and wrestling OkieSt annually is not part of the plan. That doesn't change the fact there are wrestling fans and even PSU wrestling fans who would really enjoy a PSU v OkieSt dual meet.

What sort of reception would Taylor get at Rec Hall or the BJC if they made the trip to State College? I'm guessing it would be mixed. Lol

How does PSU benefit from a match against Okie St?

PSU is already known to be the better team (at least for now).

PSU continues to demonstrate ability to recruit enough top talent to stay on top (at least for now).

PSU is already viewed by most as overall best place to make world teams and achieve highest freestyle success (at least for now).

PSU has nothing to prove or gain (at least for now).

Maybe when those things are no longer true, it will make sense to do.

And for those that will say it will “grow the sport”. Stop. Cael and PSU have done more for the sport than anyone in the last 2 decades.
Penn State drilling OkST 30-7 this fall would be a net gain for PSU and a humbling negative for Ok St. Not that difficult to understand

OKST has wrestled at Bucknell a couple times since the last PSU-OKST dual, so their AD didn't block travel to PA.

Okie state fans and media have become unbearable online the last couple years.
Imagine if they actually won anything.
Since Nebraska isn’t in Penn State’s Big Ten rotation this year Cael should call up Mark Manning and put something on the schedule to spite ole traitorous DT.

Most by vast majority vs Bucknelll in Oklahoma.

One time, on November 12, 2022, in Lewisburg since 2017. Dual against Lehigh in Bethlehem on the same day. So a two-fer. No way would have compressed travel like that for PSU. So yes, travel expenses a factor, IMHO.

Could maybe combine with an @WVU weekend to leverage travel. But would Ok St really want it to be a two dual weekend? Regardless, would be another date to coordinate.

We used to see Penn State vs the Pokes in the Southern Scuffle.

You either missed or ignored the point about the mat and tape job (facility), which has little to do with the wrestling itself. Suriano neither put himself into nor was put into any semblance of a dangerous position. Did you even watch that match closely? This is the exact point where Nick rolls his ankle.

Yeah I stumbled across the match. I am aware there appeared to be nothing that delivered a bone breaking trauma to his ankle.

I'm so sick of Taylor and his prima donna attitude. He's not in the Big Ten. Penn State is under no obligation to wrestle his team to restore its prestige. A "call out" (a truly stupid neologism) is when a person is exposed for some deficiency, especially if it misaligns with some public statement.

Taylor's still smarting that his career came to a screeching halt before he could do a victory lap.

I'll die on the minority hill on this but PSU should absolutely wrestle OK State and then feed their entrails to them after the whooping. For Taylor we can serve it to him as a Juice drink.

If Cael Sanderson thought scheduling a dual with Oklahoma State was the best thing he could do for his program and wrestlers, I think he would. Obviously, he doesn't think that. Lots of people would like to see it. When popular sentiment shapes PSU wrestling decisions, my best guess it will occur when Cael isn't the coach.

I initially “liked” support for DT’s challenge, but on reflection, I don’t want a dual, especially with a jab shaded to look like Cael’s ducking. I prefer the anticipation of the season’s first meeting between a Lion and Cowboy being at the NCAAs in March.
That said, I like DT’s work to build a dynamic team and growing threat to Lion dominance. With Iowa fading, that threat will be a terrific motivator for the 3 C’s to keep steering the juggernaut to new heights, all while providing intense, nail-biting, meaningful matches that we all love.
Edit: Reflecting yet again (hey, I’m older), I’d love to see this dual. ;)
I would love to see both starting squads at the southern scuffle like we used to. Maybe send a back up squad and win the tournament just to let dt know who is who

How about $0 and we just man the fk up.

I didn't realize that so many of our fans are total snowflakes. Talk tough, but then cave or make excuses when the challenge is thrown out there. Some of you sound truly scared of DT, OSU, a really good dual, whatever, or God forbid, a loss. We really got soft over the past 15 years.

At this point, it's embarrassing if we don't wrestle OSU in a dual at home. Put up or shut up. Don't preach "growing the sport" if you'r
Whose ego are you trying to satisfy to prevent embarrassment? PSU wrestling fans like you? Those who might be embarrassed if we don't schedule Ok State, really?

Ok State and PSU wrestled in a national duals format when Suriano broke his ankle / foot. Were you equally embarrassed all those years PSU didn't schedule Ok St when John Smith was HC?

I feel you fell for DT's rhetoric. Your overreaction is snowflakIsh, IMHO

Like was said before, Journeyman duals were available before the NDI and remain available to OkSt.
Exactly

This isn't about "growing the sport". It's about Taylor knowing he can't be the man unless he beats the man. Is he demanding to wrestle tOSU? Va. Tech? No.

Unfortunately for him, his big MONEY opportunity was with a team not in the Big 10, so the only way he has to go head to head are these WWE theatrics.

Cael's job is to advance Penn State's interests, not to restore OK State's prestige If Penn State's interests and Oklahoma State interests converge, then great. Instead of making demands, Taylor should be lookin for mutual benefit, instead yelling chicken. Maybe Ok State should join the best wrestling conference.

Maybe we're seeing why in spite of all his accolades, we have Coach Lee, not Coach Taylor.

Pretty sure David has Cael's phone number... David, what did Cael say when you called?

I would love that the two teams wrestle. Not a fan of a public call out.

It was a great interview though.. David sounds so much like Cael... Interesting that Doucet got a 7th year...

Let me add this: the time before last in which we went out to Stillwater, we wrestled them on a cheap mat out of 1979 with literally TAPE holding it together in thirds, our wrestlers complained about it, and we lost our #2 ranked 126 pounder just two weeks away from Big Tens, BECAUSE of it.

So yeah, we ain't coming to Stillwater.

Taylor is trying to manufacture a current rivalry that is not ready to happen yet. If Cael doesn't accept (and I feel confident PSU would prevail if they did wrestle), then DT will keep on until they do wrestle, most likely when OSU has their best chance. I guarantee Flo will be on the OSU bandwagon and calling PSU's bravery into question.

Don't think that's what he is trying to do at all. He's creating a no lose situation for himself. We are in the B1G, he is not. This would be the date any program circles, let alone one in an inferior conference. We face him and they lose, they are supposed to. Face us and he wins and it elevates his program. Either way, he gets the exposure.

No one is PSU's rival. However, DT is trying to make it a conversation and he has some juice. Who else is going to compete with PSU?

I think it benefits our program more than OkSU. We would sell out BJC, only Iowa, OSU, and maybe Nebraska would do that.

OkSU has sold out their season tix this year. So they dont benefit monetarily from our visit.
