I'm sure he will be criticized on here for saying that, however, he SHOULD be saying that. He is a competitor and no longer a Nittany Lion. PSU doesn't pay his salary. For OSU to get to the top of the mountain, beating PSU is secret sauce all wrestling programs desire. I see no problem at all with what he said, I would expect it.

Agree. If anyone here criticizes DT for this, or still thinks we should duck OSU, they just don't like tough wrestling. Grow the f'n sport. Give the fans what they want.

Pretty sure David has Cael's phone number... David, what did Cael say when you called?

I would love that the two teams wrestle. Not a fan of a public call out.

It was a great interview though.. David sounds so much like Cael... Interesting that Doucet got a 7th year...

FWIW, the question and answer looked staged to me.

I guess I am suppposed to believe OkSt isn't going to wrestle all of its available competition dates, and in passive aggressive fashion, it's Cael who controls OkSt's decision?

Yeah, it was an okay soundbite, but I'm not buying it.
it is not unprecedented ... you don't have to look any further than State College to find a top wrestling program that doesn't use all their dates

Taylor is trying to manufacture a current rivalry that is not ready to happen yet. If Cael doesn't accept (and I feel confident PSU would prevail if they did wrestle), then DT will keep on until they do wrestle, most likely when OSU has their best chance. I guarantee Flo will be on the OSU bandwagon and calling PSU's bravery into question.

If he keeps harping on it he will sound like Narduzzi!

Cael built a dynasty all while not playing into these highly charged story lines. You’re never going to hear him lose his cool and say “oh wow my former star pupil is now calling me out, I’m going to do what he wants me to do.” Penn State sets the rules and decides when and if these things happen, everyone else is grateful for their presence. Penn State wasn’t scheduling OSU before DT’s arrival, he can wait his turn like everyone else.

Good for him but I’d love to see a return to a tri meet where the top four teams get together over a weekend in early December at a neutral site. That would be huge. This year it would be PSU, OkSU, Neb, and Iowa/OSU/VaTech. Psst… come March the gap between the two programs will still be 50 pts.

Why would PSU engage in a tri-meet involving Nebraska, Iowa, or Ohio State? We already face them in a dual and at B10s, and some of them at NCAAs.

I initially “liked” support for DT’s challenge, but on reflection, I don’t want a dual, especially with a jab shaded to look like Cael’s ducking. I prefer the anticipation of the season’s first meeting between a Lion and Cowboy being at the NCAAs in March.
That said, I like DT’s work to build a dynamic team and growing threat to Lion dominance. With Iowa fading, that threat will be a terrific motivator for the 3 C’s to keep steering the juggernaut to new heights, all while providing intense, nail-biting, meaningful matches that we all love.
Edit: Reflecting yet again (hey, I’m older), I’d love to see this dual. ;)

If DT's big donor is willing to pay $1.23 million for the National Duals, what is he willing to pay Penn State for a match in State College?
How about $0 and we just man the fk up.

I didn't realize that so many of our fans are total snowflakes. Talk tough, but then cave or make excuses when the challenge is thrown out there. Some of you sound truly scared of DT, OSU, a really good dual, whatever, or God forbid, a loss. We really got soft over the past 15 years.

At this point, it's embarrassing if we don't wrestle OSU in a dual at home. Put up or shut up. Don't preach "growing the sport" if you're not gonna.

Whose ego are you trying to satisfy to prevent embarrassment? PSU wrestling fans like you? Those who might be embarrassed if we don't schedule Ok State, really?

Ok State and PSU wrestled in a national duals format when Suriano broke his ankle / foot. Were you equally embarrassed all those years PSU didn't schedule Ok St when John Smith was HC?

I feel you fell for DT's rhetoric. Your overreaction is snowflakIsh, IMHO

Like was said before, Journeyman duals were available before the NDI and remain available to OkSt.

I have always thought an annual PSU v OkieSt match made a ton of sense.
Not sure what Suriano's broken ankle has to do with anything.

How about we let Cael determine our schedule? David hasn’t come close to earning the right to tell Cael how or who to schedule. All of you fawning over Taylor are listening to Flo and guys like Jordan Burroughs too much. David’s done a good job to date but still has a ways to go before his performance matches his ego. David’s money guy has said he wants Oklahoma to be the wrestling capital going forward, why should we help him? Try to think bigger picture.

It's a reminder of circumstances (national championship dual meet), where (Gallagher-Iba Arena), and when (2017), in further consideration that the mats and maybe their taping was implicated. Haven't heard calls for PSU vs OkSt dual for the 7 some odd years that followed. But now all of a sudden it's embarrassing 🙄.

Bob, I'm with you and so over it.

I used to use it all the time! It was always a messy conversation b/c, like so much of wrestling's discourse, people would talk about like 5 different things like it's the same thing. But I've learned how rare the mythical conversion of a "casual fan" actually is. Best I ever saw was a bunch of my friends growing to be a fan of--get this--MY fandom.

Best chance of any hashtag growth is borrowing crossover fans from other combat sports. Like RAF is doing.

didnt Cael call TNT to get a dual when they werent on the schedule? something about the best teams should wrestle each other? So PSU went to carver when iowa wasnt on the b10 schedule (iowa now doesnt want to return the favor and come up to state college). I see the same thing here. DT wants to wrestle the best teams. im all for it.

Who wouldn't want to see that dual? Heck, I bet Cael wants to see it. But Cael didn't get where he is by being particularly susceptible to any flavor of immediate impulse. I doubt DT's tactical gauntlet-throw moves his needle all that much. DT gets to reap the rewards, such as they are. The boys will keep chopping wood and carrying water.
It isn't necessarily anything to do with DT. Coach Smith made the public statement multiple times that he would love to wrestle Penn State every year, but Cael is stingy with those dual meets.

Wanting to see PSU wrestle Okie St is not fawning over Taylor. It is the most intriguing match up in today's wrestling world. Also, PSU and Okie St is one of those match ups that should occur regularly.

Well, I believe Coach John Smith mostly said he would love to have more Big Ten teams come to Stillwater.

Where is he talking about non home meets in Stillwater? Why was 2017 in Stillwater the last PSU vs OkSt dual?

Maybe John Smith didn't want to make PSU money by traveling to State College. Maybe Ok St Administration felt travel costs were excessive for a single dual meet weekend of a non-revenue sport.

Furthermore, the revenue sports of men's and women's basketball control the dates for Gallagher-Iba Arena, just like they do for the BJC. Who is DT kidding when he says he's saving a date?

I posted this same question on Facebook but got responses from people who don’t seem to know much about Penn State. After DT accepted the offer at Ok State, did he do some things that more or less burned his bridges between him and Penn State/State College?

Some of the people posting here seem to have better inside information, so maybe someone can either confirm that this happened or say that the rumors are false.

The reason I’m asking is that maybe Cael isn’t in any hurry to deal with DT.

How does PSU benefit from a match against Okie St?

PSU is already known to be the better team (at least for now).

PSU continues to demonstrate ability to recruit enough top talent to stay on top (at least for now).

PSU is already viewed by most as overall best place to make world teams and achieve highest freestyle success (at least for now).

PSU has nothing to prove or gain (at least for now).

Maybe when those things are no longer true, it will make sense to do.

And for those that will say it will “grow the sport”. Stop. Cael and PSU have done more for the sport than anyone in the last 2 decades.
