Most are happy to be done with Franklin and onto a new era...the schedule is pretty soft (nothing in the non-conference and miss out on Ohio St/Oregon/Indiana) so it does give Campbell an opportunity to put up a better record than we probably should (this almost certainly isn't the 18th best roster in the country). Some landmines that most are overlooking (ie the road game at Northwestern on a Friday night to open their new stadium), but something like 9-3 seems realistic (though many would probably be disappointed with that result).

"The renovation will be financed and paid for entirely by Intercollegiate Athletics using no tuition dollars or educational budget."

The AD and CFO said Goldman Sachs helped them with the numbers. Of course Goldman told Penn State the numbers worked, that way Goldman can earn fees when Penn State hires them to arrange the debt.

Let's say Penn State borrows $600 million and pays back the loan over 30 years. At 6% interest, that is $44 million per year in debt service.

Penn State's athletic department typically earns a small profit, a few million per year on average.

Where is Penn State athletics going to get the money to pay $44 million of debt service every year for the next 40 years? Penn State is starting by raising ticket prices.

Penn State's football ticket sales revenue was $44 million in the 2024 season, $44 million in 2023, $42 million in 2022, and $41 million in 2021. Penn State needs to double ticket prices to fund the debt service. That won't happen.

Instead, the university - through tuition increases and more education cuts - will pick up the tab for the football stadium renovation.

The Big Ten/TV $ will likely continue to increase, new sponsorship opportunities will arise (ie, adding a patch to the jersey and more branding on fields), some of the olympic sports may be cut, much more $ will be flowing in via seat licenses/new suites, increased usage of the stadium to bring in more revenue, etc. There won't be one magic route to paying for the stadium, but instead a variety of fundraising and increased cashflows that will make it work.

Time will tell. Rutgers issued a press release in 2008 stating the same thing about the Rutgers stadium expansion.

"The expansion project is self-supporting. No public money will be used to fund the expansion and the project will have no impact on tuition or academic programs."

That same year, Rutgers put out another press release stating, "The revenue generated by the football program will cover the cost of construction...The project will be funded entirely by revenue generated by the success of the athletics program – including ticket sales for the approximately 12,500 new seats as well as parking fees, concession sales and donations from season ticket holders."

Fast forward 18 years to 2026. Rutgers pays $5 million per year in debt service for the expansion and will continue paying to 2039. The football program loses money. The athletic department loses so much money it is a national news story.

Who pays the debt service? Not the broke athletic department. Rutgers University, funded student tuition and NJ taxpayers, is paying for the expansion.

To be sure, another monster B1G media deal in 2030 could change the math, but we don't know what Penn State's math is because the AD and CFO refused to provide the numbers to Penn State's board of trustees.

As for Beaver Stadium, could care less and I refuse to put down Rutgers Athletics to make what Penn St is doing look good compared to how Rutgers atoll owes for its Stadium expansion .
The expansion was needed and if Rutgers could have played better since the stadium was expanded the debt wouldn't be such a problem , because it would be always filled and that would help pay the debt down .

I feel many of the Nit fans complaining are mainly frustrate over PSU not being considered a cream of the crop program anymore, being a 2nd tier football team just below the best where they once were classified .
So now instead of blind faith in the program and what the program plans to do , they are now starting to nitpick what the cost is to attend and the money the program spends.

The school should pay for athletics. Athletics are the best marketing a state university can have. I don't know where this theory that athletics needs to pay for themselves comes from, when no other dept. is expected to turn a profit. Very few schools athletic dept. turn a profit or even pay for themselves. Rutgers will likely never be one of those that do.
