I do not believe the Olympic organizers care in the least what happens with college wrestling. It is only freestyle that matters to them and it is hard to knock a coach who has been a consistent enabler of freestyle pursuits during the college season. In this regard, Sanderson's approach to scheduling is helpful for Olympic promotion. We’ve already lost Olympic weights. That stuff will continue if these highly visible guys don’t try and promote the sport.
My poorly made point is that it is hard to know the motivations when something is both self-serving and good for the sport. When someone does something that is good for the sport and against their own self-interest then I could be pursuaded. We see this in other ways too. A lot of people on these boards bemoan the coming downfall of college athletics due to NIL and free transfers at the same time they celebrate their own teams new additions via the transfer portal.Yes, and part of how you do that is make cool events that entice excitement.
