I love David putting it out there. Cael will for sure be asked about it and is going to look pretty weak when he declines to schedule us. They have a great team/program and clearly have a formula that works for them, but how can you not want this matchup as a competitor?

Did it look weak for years when John wasn't trying to schedule them? Why wasn't that dual happening yearly? Looking weak doesn't matter when you constantly win. This is gonna give Penn st a bunch more publicity and show recruits they're still the big dog that Oklahoma St wants to wrestle

Get out of here with that crap. We have routinely wrestled one of the toughest schedules year in and year out for decades. You can say a lot of things about John but he wanted to wrestle anyone in the country. He understood big matches are vital for the sport.

Penn State and Oklahoma State don't wrestle because Penn State doesn't want to. Full Stop. Cael doesn't want to wrestle a hard dual schedule. As a fan of the sport it sucks but it works for them so what are you going to do.

Lol DT is tired of getting asked about Penn State. I don't think he "threw the gauntlet down" as much as he gave an answer that will hopefully reduce the questions about Penn State.

From what I can tell PSU already gets a bunch of crap for their schedule and resting their guys more than most. Makes the nattys and records not nearly as impressive. I don't exactly share this opinion but this kind of thing gets posted constantly

When was this? I don’t remember that ever being a story but I could be wrong. Certainly doesn’t sound like John but you may be correct. What I do remember about John was he always did things to grow the sport of wrestling which seems like it would be the biggest impact of a dual like this. Neither OSU or Penn State need much help with getting recruits attention.

Also, trying to understand how John Smith and any of his past decisions would change the optics for Cael. Agree with you that winning national titles is the only thing that really matters but hard to really see any negatives to making this match happen. Would expect Cael is able to let us know why it is a net negative for his program.

Pretty big day for OSU Wrestling!

1. Put the PSU talk to rest at a minimum, but currently it created tons of publicity. It's showing our culture a little too! ANYONE, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME, BAR NONE!

2. Invitational announced for 11/1 which can be nothing but good.

3. The Deuce is back! A guy that everybody wants to succeed that has another year with the staff and has a confidence trajectory that could make him a problem.

@Corby2 you know John didn't duck Cael.

Seems to have got the board moving so that's good 🤷 . Grow the sport is a convenient generic phrase people use in wrestling when they want something. Are you sure that Doucet is back and enrolling in school?

Cael seems to have more of a long term philosphy and international philosophy. Wrestle as few times as possible and get ready for the big meets. The less times you make weight the more longevity your career will have. He seems to want to get guys ready for international competition and not so much for collegiate stuff. Therefore, why make you schedule any tougher than it needs to be?

Whatever he is selling, recruits are buying!!

Just an outsider looking in.

So do as little for the sport as possible.

lol he raised the bar on so many things wrestling. Just depends on where you’re sitting, whether you like it or not. For example making senior level wrestling a paid career is basically Cael’s doing. It’s an impossible job to meet every single wrestling fan’s expectations.
But Cael is the folk style college coach correct? Yes we all know how he got around the rules to pay TC guys to recruit college kids.

I agree. I do not think Cael is concerned about growing the sport. I think he is concerned about winning as much as possible and doing what makes his guys the most successful. Maybe he thinks it helps the sport and causes others to grow so they can compete and maybe he is a selfish son of a gun who only cares about himself and his legacy. I have no idea and I was not trying to draw a conclusion. I was only stating what I thought he was doing.

Don't kid yourselves into thinking Taylor said what he said to grow the sport. This whole grow the sport stuff is silliness.
I don’t think this is accurate.

Most of these guys know, if you don’t promote the sport, it can whither and die.

We’ve already lost Olympic weights. That stuff will continue if these highly visible guys don’t try and promote the sport.

I don’t like caels approach to the folkstyle season either, but he’s literally a goat of American wrestling and has been massively influential. Finances, training, technique, culture, lifestyle, scheduling, records. I think you can be critical of him for sure but saying he doesn’t do anything for wrestling seems pretty far off the mark. Not really that important though, carry on lol
