Need some more interesting things to talk about in here than the WNBA, Texas Southern, and Ginny sacramoni’s fat a**. So what should we expect to see when Hines and Copeland go head to head at the center position when we play UConn?

By all accounts Hines has entered beast mode in UConn practices and is arguably the strongest player in the country. With a height at 6’10 he sort of dwarfs Copeland who is what, 6’6 or 6’7? Copeland however is also build like a truck and having a lower center of gravity should be able to hold his own positioning in the paint against Hines.

At this point in their development, I would imagine Copeland may have the edge in back to the basket moves. Maybe he can get Hines in foul trouble, which last year was not a difficult thing to do.

Maybe having a 6’10 elite shot blocker in Williams helping in the paint can also aid Copeland in containing Hines offensively.

Any thoughts?

Copeland is being hyped up significantly on our boards, so my expectation is he will be able to hold his own against Hines even if he’s smaller.

Nothing to worry about. Hurley will play Hines for 8 minutes like Shaheen did…. Oh, nevermind

I’d like to have him, too, but he’s not arguably the strongest player in the country.
Let's make it a more manageable discussion to start with and just say looking back to last year even as a freshman, I can think of only one player who was probably stronger than him and it was a senior Reid on Uconn - and it wasn't by much. With Reid gone now, who in the Big East do you think is actually stronger than Hines this coming season?

Who knows with the way rosters change.
There’s a big difference comparing the Big East to the entire country. But regardless, it’s one thing to be strong, it’s another to put it to use. He still has a lot of work to do as far as that goes.

If we can agree he is likely the strongest player in the Big East then we can move on to the country. You seem to take issue with that statement, so I'm just asking you to name the players you think are significantly stronger than Hines. I am speaking about strength specifically and that was what you responded in disagreement to. So just wondering if you actually can name any.

Of course moving forward Hines is the better player. But he does have issues. He was indeed tired during games and asked out. That was verified to me by people on the road who sat beind the bench. And it happened often.

That said he has had an entire offseason to work on that, lose weight and work on his endurance. He will be a better player for that.

As for Copeland. Have any of you seen his vertical that was posted by the school during workouts? He jumps about a foot or more over the rim. Combine that with his strength and size. And he was measured between 6-7 and 6-8 according to a source.

Realistically you would want more height. But with his strength and athleticism he'll do fine in the middle.

Both players will be major assets to their team.

I have no idea who is the strongest. One thing Uconn fans should not expect from naj is Reed's offense, unless Hines' O has improved 3fold.

Clearly Hines is seen as more valuable. But I still say both cope and dev will give us more offense than naj (or Payne) gave us. And getting these guys and kabba to replace last yrs centers is a good job

Wonder if Hines plays 3 yrs in college. I expect by then he is all American level

Height on its own is the most overrated measurement in basketball.

The best player in the Big East played Center at 6'7.5" last year (without shoes).

Far more important measurements are wingspan, standing reach, vertical leap, agility, etc.

Hines is a monster. We saw how he played as a less than ideal conditioned true freshman. He should be better at everything at UConn where he measured 6'11" and 278 pounds this summer.

How does that compare to Copeland? We don't know because our coach treats everything as a state secret.

Copeland is similar body type to guys who played center like NJ Benson and Zuby Ejiofor. Zuby measure 6'7.5" (without shoes) 245 pounds at the NBA Draft Combine. More importantly he had an excellent 7'2" wingspan, 8'11" standing reach and a standing vertical leap of 34.0".

We don't have any official measurements on Copeland. Height/Weight he's likely around 6'7" 230 pounds. Going by the photo that shows his vertical leap test it looks like he's just shy of the 18" marker above the rim on the vertical test marker, so say 17", his max reach is 11'5". That's a respectable max reach but we don't know if it's a Standing Vertical Leap or a Max Vertical Leap which is a running Vertical and is usually 3 to 5 inches higher.

Compare to Zuby's numbers. With a 8'11" standing reach and standing vertical of 34" his max reach would be 11'9". If you use his Max Vertical Leap (running start) of 38" then his max reach would be 12'1".

So Zuby, at a similar height to Copeland has anywhere from 4 to 8 inches of extra reach on his vertical leap. Doesn't tell you how Copeland can play but that is how compares physically to the BE POY, DPOY and a 1st round NBA pick.

I was told that Copeland took about a week or so to show his ability. He is not a finished product but showed big time potential.

In the meantime his primary backup at the 5, Abdulai Fanta Kabba, a 7-foot, 235-pound center played much better than expected and he along with probable starting 4, Devin Williams, 6-foot-10 will also play some 5.

Hines is elite level talent. I think he has potential to be one of the best players in the country by his 5th year.
