What’s to be made of Drew Allar with the Steelers?

Did CJF do Drew a great favor at the expense of the team and Jame's Reputation? I think that James was playing 5D chess while others were playing checkers.

CJF gets Drew into the playoff in his 3rd year so Drew has some success and gets noticed. James forces Drew to throw into very tight windows to small and slow WRs. Drew gets used to having to make perfect passes to these slower smaller wide receivers all while ignoring the middle of the field. James also berates Drew for throwing any interceptions and for even coming close to throwing interceptions making Drew nervous about throwing the rock.

CJF has Drew run the ball 8-10 times a game. He gets hurt and then goes down draft boards allowing a great franchise like Pittsburgh to take Drew in the 3rd round, taking a lot of the pressure off of Drew. Drew gets into a great QB situation, learns from a great in Rodgers and is now in line to be QB1 next year.

Drew now has a capable OL, fast big receivers, gets to throw to the middle of the field.....this is like playing basketball on an 8 foot rim for Allar.

That is one explanation for what happened to Drew at PSU. The other more conventional theory is that James only has one offense and he uses it regardless of who he has at QB, RB or WR, killing the chance for a throwing pocket QB to grow and get better. That seems crazy to me.
Haha…4-D Chess??? Franklin was more likely playing Yatzee on game days!!

Couple of thoughts concerning Drew Allar's performance last night.

1. At that point in the contest, it was a JV game at the pro level. Drew is a potential Varsity quarterback and he looked the part with his performance.

2. His release was much quicker than I remember from the last couple of years.

3. He was "on target" with all throws except the one to his left where he thought the receiver would run an out pattern.

4. I thought (my opinion only) that the best ball he threw was a 6 yard gain on the right sideline. Hit the receiver low and away from any defender while running to his right.

5. And the last comment. It was nice to see him smiling late in the game. Haven't seen that since his game at WVU.

Tons of talent. Flashed some ability and it was somewhat typical for a Franklin player -- flashed but not great, fundamentally sound but not game changing, almost mechanical in individual play, not tremendously clutch, savvy or exciting. I think except for Barkley, Geskicki, Dotson, Warren and possibly Fatman, you could say the same for most big-time offensive recruits of BGJ. Always wondered why that was. Don't know. A real mystery -- coaching, system, or just the type of player recruited?

My only criticism of Drew was the pass to the back inside the five yd line on his1st series. It reminded me of the easy pass to Singleton that was behind Nick and this one was a little too far in front. Both were catchable, but not easy catches. Someone said last night as an NFL QB, you need to make that throw on the money 10 out of 10 times.

Last I checked O’Brien coached QBs at Penn State and followed Franklin to VaTech. Since Grunk looked good in the games he played at Penn State I guess O’Brien must have completely changed his coaching methods immediately after Franklin got fired. We shall see how this all pans out but count me in the camp of those who think Campbell made a mistake by opting for one year of Becht rather than potentially three of Grunk.
I don't believe he was staying regardless

What are thoughts about Drew Allar with PSU vs Drew Allar with the Steelers?

I just cannot figure out why it looks like we bottled Allar and kept him from tossing the ball around like this. The only time he ever looked like this at PSU was if we were down double digits and trying desperately for a comeback.

As a long suffering Jets fan my take is it means absolutely nothing.

I am no fan of Aaron Rodgers but by all accounts he has been an excellent mentor to both Howard and Allar. Very generous with his time and advice. What I’m reading is that this is in direct response to the way Brett Favre treated him when he was a rookie. (Favre wouldn’t lift a finger to help him.)

Favre was too busy trying to figure out how to lift Rogers’ wallet.

James has stated in interviews this year that he recognizes the mistakes he has made. Do you think that he understands the system cannot have a qb like Grunk play like a dual threat? It will be interesting.
I think Franklin is about to ride off into oblivion. He might be the most overpaid HC in the game. He would make a great administrator where BS counts without consequences. What he did to set up his own exit with player exoduses from PS was inexcusable.

I agree that I would like to have kept Grunk. CMC probably just wanted Becht, though I think a case could be made for trying to make the playoff this year with the friendly schedule and then hopefully have that be a springboard to big gains in recruiting. Grunk learning a new system would make that plan tougher to execute.

On your first point, someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I seem to remember Terry Smith saying we were going to push the ball downfield with our passing game, implying that was something we weren’t doing before under Franklin. Maybe that helped contribute to Grunk’s success?

Maybe they think Manske will be better than Grunk. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Becht is here to help establish the overall culture for the program, and culture is Campbell’s top priority in y1. Becht is probably a better qb than Grunk anyway, at least at this point of time. Grunk was offered a ton of money to stay at PSU (near P4 starter money) with the understanding that Becht was the clear starter and Grunk was a backup that could compete for the starter job in 2027. Grunk chose VT to start in 2026 and with the familiarity of Franklin’s staff. Grunk will win the starting job there, but the competition in their room is a lot closer than you would imagine.

I've always liked Drew and thought he was handcuffed by the coaching staff. I hope he has a great career but I'm going to reserve judgment until he's playing against 1st string pro's in meaningful games.
I always liked him too, but I thought he didn't deal well with pressure. He would become visibly upset when a play went bad- something you don't want to see, especially not in a QB.

He has a ton of ability; my question is still about his mental toughness. Time will tell.

You don't see Josh Allen, Aaron Rodgers, etc being visibly upset when a play goes wrong?
Want some videos of Brady being upset?

Soft should go over well in Pittsburgh.

its 1/2 of the first pre-season game. Let's just give him a chance without falling into the trap of predicting him to start over Clifford or winning a Heisman trophy.

I have to agree with you Loado. For the life of me I can't understand why Grunk followed Franklin to VT other than being assured the starting job.
It seemed to me his heart was at PSU and he really wanted to stay. But Matt Campbell was bringing his guys and there was only so much room. I think he felt he deserved to start after proving it for half a season—and he’s not necessarily wrong. But likely wrong about it being VT.

I don’t think the choice was Becht vs. Grunk. I think it was Manske vs Grunk. Both were Elite 11 QB’s rated as 4-star recruits. But at the end of the day, Manske is more mobile, which they want, and knows their system already. Plus, I’m just guessing, but they probably would’ve had to pay Grunk more than Manske.

I think Brady was POed in any clips you find.
Drew had fear.

I want Drew to do well. But he was his own enemy at times.

I keep reading stories about how assertive Rodgers is as a mentor. Dang, so impressive.
