Against a team with 8 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, who went 1-1-1 vs the B1G and was undefeated in conference play. Five different goal scorers. The new coach will either be Fran or Ben, but watching how we played today, I can safely say he’s no Lickliter.

Last year's team is no longer.

They only returned 2 players that scored more than one goal and returned only 15 of 54 goals scored.

Iowa has a pretty big core that stuck with this new staff. This 7-0 butt kicking was awesome to see. Heard plenty that the new staff was not super pleased about the way DiIanni went out. Sounded like he was contacting girls after he got to Michigan when they weren't in the portal. Did he not see Kirk and McNamara?

I’ll add a couple observations:

-Dave had clearly checked out by the NCAA Tournament last year, particularly the second round. It would be like watching Fran calm and sitting quietly all match. Didn’t sit well with me.

-I thank him for putting us on the map, and the recruits that stayed look really good. Huge upgrade at goalkeeper this year with our Scotland U19 keeper (who played HS in Illinois). She commands her area well, is very comfortable with ball at feet. and pulled off her one difficult diving save beautifully.

-We have the NCAA D2 Player of the Year last year, and she looks really good on free kicks with her left foot. Berit Parten takes with her right, and she might well be one of the top scorers by season’s end. Her second goal was top class (btw, basketball related, her hs soccer teammate was Addi Mack of Maryland Terps, who shows her a lot of social media love)

Hawkeyes make their rankings debut. The Top Drawer Soccer writers have them at 19, while they are just “receiving votes” in the coaches poll. That will very much change with their first big test, at #13/11 Wake Forest this Thursday on ESPN+.

Meanwhile @Hawkfan_08* , Dave has had to settle for draws at Utah Valley and Utah State to start the season:

PS - I called that our D2 player was dangerous on set pieces. Here’s her free kick goal against Loyola-Chicago in a 5-0 win (swipe left):

Gave up a goal just a minute in, and despite decisively out-shooting WF, gave up a late one to the same striker from distance. Go against UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 11, before the Cy-Hawk Series opener at Ames. Both games broadcast on ESPN+.

THREE Hawkeyes named to the Canada WNT for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Iba Oching, Liana Tarasco, and new transfer Lea Larouche. Melisa Kekic, who followed Dave to Michigan, was not selected.

Hawkeye soccer goes up on a Millie Greer goal from a headed corner, only for it to get waived off on review for a dubious push-off call. On ESPN+/Hulu Live now.

EDIT: Alli Mackie with a beautiful first touch strike off an absolutely inch-perfect curling through-ball from Elle Wildman. Then Wildman takes it herself on the wing, and gets chopped down. She takes the PK she earned and buries it. 3-0 as Iowa has broken this open.

FYI YouTube TV subscribers now get ESPN+ content for free. You need to go to the YouTube app on a mobile device to link up ESPN, then you can use the ESPN app or go to espn.com to watch the ESPN+ games. You'll need to create a free Disney / ESPN account to link up. They say the ESPN+ content will go into the YouTube TV app directly sometime in the future.

Iowa women's soccer is playing at Iowa State at 6pm tonight, on ESPN+.

If you are really lazy, after hooking up your YouTube TV account with your ESPN account, go to hawksports.com, click on the little espn+ logo inside the Iowa @ ISU game card, and it will take you to the game on espn.com.

Canada beat France today in the round of 16 (FIFA U20) and next gets North Korea, who hasn’t yet allowed a goal. Oching and Tarasco have been starting.

Darn, #2 Iowa field hockey is down 0:2 at home vs Indiana early in the 3rd quarter. They will have to pull a second half come back again. Indiana is near the perennial doormat status in the Big Ten.

Iowa loses 1:3. They will play again on Sunday, but that game will count as a non-conference game. The main thing though, Iowa lost to an unranked team at home, badly.
