They’re not pushovers. Last year they tied Northwestern 2-2, beat Minnesota 1-0, went undefeated in the Horizon League at 8-0-2, and made the NCAA tournament. Lost to an elite Michigan State team there, 4-1. Good test to start the year.

Against a team with 8 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, who went 1-1-1 vs the B1G and was undefeated in conference play. Five different goal scorers. The new coach will either be Fran or Ben, but watching how we played today, I can safely say he’s no Lickliter.

Iowa has a pretty big core that stuck with this new staff. This 7-0 butt kicking was awesome to see. Heard plenty that the new staff was not super pleased about the way DiIanni went out. Sounded like he was contacting girls after he got to Michigan when they weren't in the portal. Did he not see Kirk and McNamara?

I’ll add a couple observations:

-Dave had clearly checked out by the NCAA Tournament last year, particularly the second round. It would be like watching Fran calm and sitting quietly all match. Didn’t sit well with me.

-I thank him for putting us on the map, and the recruits that stayed look really good. Huge upgrade at goalkeeper this year with our Scotland U19 keeper (who played HS in Illinois). She commands her area well, is very comfortable with ball at feet. and pulled off her one difficult diving save beautifully.

-We have the NCAA D2 Player of the Year last year, and she looks really good on free kicks with her left foot. Berit Parten takes with her right, and she might well be one of the top scorers by season’s end. Her second goal was top class (btw, basketball related, her hs soccer teammate was Addi Mack of Maryland Terps, who shows her a lot of social media love)

Hawkeyes make their rankings debut. The Top Drawer Soccer writers have them at 19, while they are just “receiving votes” in the coaches poll. That will very much change with their first big test, at #13/11 Wake Forest this Thursday on ESPN+.

Meanwhile @Hawkfan_08* , Dave has had to settle for draws at Utah Valley and Utah State to start the season:

PS - I called that our D2 player was dangerous on set pieces. Here’s her free kick goal against Loyola-Chicago in a 5-0 win (swipe left):
