Fake news. Low t rump reduced the deficit, Iran completely capitulated, apologized, and offered the US the straight of Hormuz as a token of sincere apology (they are also becoming completely Christian too), tariffs raked in billions, low t rump was completely exonerated from the Epstein files, millions of illegal, rapist aliens voluntarily left the country, Denmark gifted us Greenland, the Russia/Ukraine war ended simply because he said so, and the blue wave coming in November is actually a red tide.

In March 2016, during an interview with The Washington Post, Donald Trump stated that he could eliminate the entire U.S. national debt—which was then about $19 trillion—"over a period of eight years".

"We're not a rich country. We're a debtor nation," Trump said. "We've got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt."

When asked by interviewers how long it would take to pay off the total amount, Trump replied: "I think we can do it over a period of eight years."

@Scrubby

Let me know if you need a pen to sign that check to the children’s hospital. I like my odds more and more. 😜
Things aren't looking good for the people's champion unfortunately (this was predicted).

I have no issue cutting a check to children's. Don't worry 😀

Hope you're ready to do the same with the upcoming arrests (splc had a bad day today, though obviously that doesn't count towards our other bet)

Yeah, well...he's still got 2.5 years to figure it out. Quit selling Donald short!!!!!

Most of MAGA isn’t educated enough to understand this, but they are very pro-high interest rates. I’m sure some don’t realize that to run a deficit = issue more debt = less funds available to purchase other debt (eg, MBS).

But high interest rates don’t really impact a meaningful % of the geriatric MAGA base like @TigerGrowls who aren’t exactly out there buying a starter home or running a business.

Well…..
July 2026 – Entitlements + Interest

CategoryAmount
Medicare$174.3 billion
Social Security$140.7 billion
Health (mainly Medicaid)$82.9 billion
Income Security$64.1 billion
Veterans’ Benefits & Services$55.2 billion
Net Interest$104.2 billion

Combined total (entitlements + interest): ≈ $621.4 billion

That is the large majority of the $766 billion in total July spending.

July 2026 – Remaining spending (to complete the $766.3 billion total)

CategoryAmount
National Defense$90.6 billion
Administration of Justice$12.8 billion
Transportation$12.6 billion
Education, Training, Employment & Social Services$9.0 billion
Community and Regional Development$6.5 billion
General Government$6.7 billion
Natural Resources and Environment$5.4 billion
International Affairs$4.7 billion
General Science, Space & Technology$3.6 billion
Commerce and Housing Credit$2.6 billion
Energy$2.6 billion
Agriculture$1.7 billion
Undistributed Offsetting Receipts (negative)–$13.8 billion
Other smaller categories / residual~$0.3 billion

Subtotal of the above: ≈ $144.9 billion

Grand total check:
Entitlements + Interest ($621.4B) + Remaining ($144.9B) = $766.3 billion

We have a spending problem and with no one willing to cut spending this will continue.

Where is the 33 billion in tariff refunds buried in these numbers
Tax refunds are also shown as a contra- revenue just like tariff refunds?la
There is another side to this equation....n w.

90 billion for defense pencils out to. 1.1 trillion which exceeds their budget by more than 200 billion.

Why has interest on debt spiked?
High interest rates are directly tied to inflation from tariffs and the iran war both orchestrated by
Trump.
Trump loves debt..." I'm the king of debt"
Damn right he is...as long someone else foots the bill like taxpayers or in his case in business..the banks he defaults on.

He might not have figured that the USA cannot declare bankruptcy like he always did after yet another screwup

Julys deficit put the 10 month total at 1.8 trillion
Easy math 180 billion/ month on the way to 2.2 trillion annual deficit.
No covid
No financial collapse like in 2008.
In 2015 under Obama it was an annual deficit of 400 billion.
In non- calamity years it should be much lower than 2.2 trillion.
This boomlet in AI should have us in a dot com economy.....but tariffs and war are inflationary keeping interest expense high.

Yeah, the deficit isn’t linear. It’s not smooth. So one mo th is meaningless. I think you know that, but not sure

data is available here...

the very first PDF (monthly treasury statement) shows the deficit spending for this fiscal year has already outpaced last year's...and we still have 2 months to go

in all likelihood, this will be the largest deficit ever outside 2020 (largest) and 2021 (second largest)

Here's a thought... maybe you don't quit your f'n job (slashing revenue) when you have debt to pay.

ENTITLEMENTS ARE THE PROBLEM.

This board has been flooded with people who seem to want MORE entitlements. Medicare for all. Paid family leave. Free childcare. Holy **** guys.

We need to aggressively ween the public off the government teat. Then scale back entitlement spending in a meaningful way. It's the ONLY way to get our spending under control.

Yet we provide 4 trillion in tax cuts. Spend 1 billion plus per day now on a ridiculous war. Spent hundreds of millions on Trump vanity projects. Trillions more in Afghanistan.

Always have money for tax cuts and wars, then they downshift to the deficit is so bad now that we have to cut “entitlements” - like Social Security and Medicare - that I have already paid for (which they used to fund the ridiculous wars).

A real solution requires everyone to take a bite out of the Shiite sandwich.

Yea, cut the war **** too. And the vanity projects if you like, but those are a drop in the bucket.

We don't spend money on tax cuts. We allow hard working Americans - the vast majority of whom pay at least their fair share - keep more of the money they earn for their family.

We have a spending problem and with no one willing to cut spending this will continue.
If we never changed the 2000 tax rates, we'd have around $1 trillion additional revenue this year and cumulatively around $14 trillion more in the treasury.

If we hadn't had the Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran wars, we'd have around $8 trillion more in the treasury.

That's $22 trillion out of our $40 trillion national debt.

Stupid wars and stupid tax cuts.

Moreover, interest rates would doubtless be low. So interest on the debt would be modest.

Restoring most of those unwise tax cuts won't solve our debt problem but it sure would help.

Fortunately, the Afghan and Iraq wars are already over. Unfortunately no savings are left there. But ending the current nonsense - and avoiding more wars of choice - sure would help.
