I don't care what anyone says. I'm terrified week 1. We could be playing the college of the blind and until I see us actually play, I worry. So many questions on this team.

I'm so glad we got our annual thread discussing Iowa's preseason ranking which includes a number of people reminding everyone about how worthless they are.

Death, taxes and this thread the first week of every August.

Until November, football polls are about as accurate as the 30-day weather forecast, and even less meaningful. IMHO, of course.
The polls added interest to the game, and in doing so, spread interest to the rest of college athletics

My personal belief is that no official poll should be released until after Week 1 (that includes Week 0 games).

If local media, even those acknowledged as voters for the AP Top 25, want to publish their own preseason all, they would be more than welcome to.

But, no team can attach a number to its name until a live Week of games have been played.

Just my two cents.....

Everyone loves the early polls, whether they want to admit it or not. That’s why these discussions about how worthless they are crack me up so much.

More like there are people that appreciate the early polls because it gives them (primarily the media) something to talk about.

I think the casual fan could take it or leave it.

Sounds about right considering all that we lost. Sometimes I kind of prefer to be unrated, because it feels like the team plays better.

Go Hawks!

Kind of like it feels like the team plays worse when put against high expectations?

Completely a commentary on fans and how they can end up judging the team.

Go Hawks!

While I agree, we're at the point now that the CFP is the only poll that actually matters. When that comes out no one pays any attention to the Coaches or AP. But gotta have that number next to a name for hyping up games.

Preseason polls can end up playing into the first CFP poll.

Go Hawks!

Hawks come in at #21 on the CBS Sports preseason pole
Cyclones land at #69 - one spot behind the New Mexico Lobos.

Throw away the “it’s always a close rivalry game” mantra and stomp them by 40+. I want to see a play action rollout 70 yard TD pass up 35 with 2 mins to play in the 4thQ.

((Knowing KF I’ll be satisfied with a comfortable cover and plenty of work for all 2-deeps))

Week 2 is tough, it'll be closer at half than we like (Debby last year), then the hawks will pour it on. I expect a 20+ point win.

22 seems fair. As for the preseason polls being meaningless.. Yeah I agree, but they're fun to talk about. There seem to be teams that are always ranked Top 5-10 and then drop like a rock most years (looking at you, Texas schools).

I view these initial polls as a general indication of national respect/perception or lack thereof, and not much more. It all gets sorted out during the season.

A lot of past Iowa teams have failed to live up to the hype, that's for sure. I don't know if it's BECAUSE of the ranking and expectations, or if the hype was just overblown to begin with.
