interestingly, in Canada, the forests are so large that they estimate only about half the fires are caused by humans -- and many of the largest are caused by lighting strikes in remote areas where it is difficult to to fight the fire or even worth it to commit the resources. In the US and probably anywhere else with more population, humans are the main cause.

Also interesting is that N California had massive fires in 20/21, which burned a lot of the fuel and since then it has been much less. This cycle has gone on forever.
We do have a significant drought in the SW and Lake Mead is too low. How this extends to forest fires I will leave up to you but it is totally moronic to grow water intensive alfalfa in the Imperial Valley with Lake Mead where it is at. And then not even charge competitive rates for the water.
I wish my ancestors started irrigating the California desert 100-150 years ago so I had water rights, it would be a lifetime guaranteed income from the government. Kinda socialist

RE: Electricity Rates. I listened to a technology podcast this am and some grid issues are real. My podcast focused on PJM, a 15 state company that manages most of the grid from Maryland to Illinois. It was created around 2000 to separate the grid from companies that produce electricity. The idea was/is to create competition. They run auctions to sell electricity to local utilities across all 15 states, which is supposed to end up in lower prices and probably did back in 2000.
In 2026 the problem is demand is exploding for electricity and each state controls the demand side (like data centers) but not so much the supply side, as it comes from PJM auctions.
Bottomline, it is complicated, but old coal and some gas capacity are going away and the replacements in the pipeline probably don't meet the large increase in demand. State governments do not want to approve new production (probably natural gas) in their states, so it remains an unresolved issue. Maybe if the socialist democrats get the white house they will allocate trillions of dollars for solar, wind and battery storage ilo natural gas. They could call it the Inflation Reduction Act!
In AZ our local utility, SRP, controls both production and distribution and seems to be doing a good job of matching supply with demand. Under Biden they were denied adding capacity using natural gas but seem to have navigated the situation OK - so far.

As I have been posting here for about a decade, the demand for electricity has continued to rise while generation and transmission has been reduced by governments that have no understanding other than NIMBY.
Reducing the ability to produce electricity thru eliminating coal or nuke production does one thing in the capitalist economy, raise sales cost to the end destination consumer.
Government regulations or other squeezing of innovations to the generation of electricity slows improvements to the industry. Many "knew" that huge wind towers were inefficient, but we were drowned out by fear.
Lack of knowledge generally brings in the "Boogie Man" of fears to people.
For example an AI site is slated for the area of my Sister's new home. Her Daughter (my Niece) is doom and gloom and wants her to sell ASAP before prices drop. Me as a previously licensed residential appraiser am suggesting wait. High paying jobs into her area, with limited SFH available will raise RE pricing !
