It has been painfully obvious for years there is a risk. When we started having kids, I wanted boys, and was really unsure how I'd handle the discussion. Only girls.

I admit, every now and then a little guilt creeps in when i watch college ball, someone else's family is taking that risk for my entertainment. But I guess now that they are getting paid, there is some form compensation for the risk.

Hopefully, yall or someone is moving towards a full summary of the data but this is pretty scary "On average, the brain donors had played about 12 years of football and died at age 60. About 28%, or 180 of them, didn’t have evidence of CTE in their brains. Another 163 had low-stage CTE, and 288 had high-stage CTE. As seen in previous studies, the number of reported concussions wasn’t associated with CTE incidence or severity."

They are taking that risk because they are good at it and now they get educated and paid. None of the players are primarily motivated to play in order to entertain us. There has always been danger and its just common sense. Football is not the only sport with the risk either by far. When the NFL players started suing it was just a plain money grab. They all got paid.

Me too. Back when you actually had to have some grades to stay eligible, all the starters flunked out except Don and I believe he carried Iowa to 2nd place behind the OSU national champs who had Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek and Larry Siegfried...

He would later join Havlicek as a Celtic. I remember he shot free throws one handed...

Just so we are clear, other sports also have a risk of tbi and cte. Just that football leads the list. No league might be going bankrupt but there are many athletes who are going to be using a sippy cup unless more research on diagnostics and therapy is funded.

Absolutely. My son decided not to play football, but played soccer instead. Lots of concussions in Soccer too though. The concussion procedure is pretty good though. They had a Dr. on the sidelines and he was pretty much like a major league umpire. He gave EVERYONE the thumb and they'd be on the bench the rest of the game.

Football has been killing players since the sport was invented. What isn't known is the number of players that took their lives or died from dementia related symptoms caused by CTE.

Yep and I HATE this. I played football, basketball, and baseball in HS. And unlike most on here, I wasn't especially good at any of them. Just one more average Joe doing his best. I wouldn't want to trade the life lessions I got from organized sports. But damn... as a parent, one of the general goals is to get your kid to adulthood WITHOUT brain damage.
