Much like Jackson retrofitted facts to support his predetermined conclusion. Although you rightly conclude that he “ jumped to the wrong conclusion”, you push back that he “ made anything up”. So far so good. Here’s where things get trickier: So on what evidence was he going by to play judge and jury in the court of public opinion? Very little best I can tell. Initial investigation showed signs of a sexual assault iirc. Proceed with the investigation by all means. But when DNA testing couldn’t link the accused to the incident in question, this would have been the time to draw down, scale back the rhetoric. He failed to do so, but was more than happy to dig up the darkest moments of the pre Civil War South when rich white men preyed on helpless female slaves. Horrific stuff, but to echo these comparisons without sufficient evidence?
He also promised to pay for Crystal Manghum’s college expenses regardless of how “ the trial turned out” so she didn’t have to take her clothes off for money anymore. Sadly for Crystal, when the cameras disappeared so did Jesse.

Jackson once remarked that Obama’s election in 08 was the “last lap of a sixty mile race” and some have suggested that Jackson may have felt that Obama wasn’t sufficiently grateful to his forerunners for paving the way. That’s largely speculative, but they had different ideas on messaging for sure, but that’s understandable given the generation gap but doesn’t fully explain his hot mic moment imho

When someone you may not personally jive with or see eye to eye with on key issues becomes the leader of your party, most politicians tend to put aside personal animus and join the team. Very few exceptions. While you undoubtedly consider Vance and Graham unprincipled sellouts concerning Trump, I’m sure you use much softer language re: Dems who lose elections and later fight for the common aims of the Party.

And there’s the human element on top of the messaging as well. Some guys I agree with politically I just don’t want to hang out with. No golf, no beer, don’t make me change my number sort of thing. By all accounts, their relationship always seemed forced, although I think Jackson was genuinely excited about his success.

The media, activists, and politicians aren’t after justice. Division helps their wallet, and boy does it help them well. All they’re after is 1, seeing what the issue is, and 2, finding those to blame.

No solutions. The activists thrive on division. Without it, they have no job. The media needs division for ratings, and the politicians, well they gotta get elected, and by whatever means necessary.

As you know, this isn’t the Sharpton era anymore. We’re in a new landscape now. With social media and algorithms and bias confirmation, etc. Where otherwise intelligent people feel emboldened by a nonstop barrage of clickbait. “ I knew it all along!” as they continuously hit the like button, thus ensuring that the cycle of dopamine hits and bias confirmation continues.

Jesse Jackson was rarely wrong. Al Sharpton is rarely right. I've stated this previously.

I stand by my previous statement defending them against the claim that they're the main contributors to division. Our President has sown distrust in the media with criticism I find spurious. It is undeniable that money has compromised the media to some degree. To what degree is open to debate.

Same with politicians. I don't expect the same level I expect from my pastors, though. Politics is a dirty business even when done well.

Bingo. He made himself fairly wealthy, not Trump or Pelosi wealthy, but he was no saint. The boycott has long been established as a legit tool to effect policy change, but in Jackson’s case it was often perceived as a money changing hands, problem goes away type dynamic. He would invite public shaming to a corp, checks would be written, no more problem.

My reference to making things up was only about the line of business I’m in. For example, I see cars come in where the customer said they were told they needed brake pads by say, the dealer, and we find the brake pads thick.
I didn’t agree with the good Rev, as you’re well aware, but I wasn’t insinuating he made things up. Sorry for the confusion there.

I wouldn't place Jesse Jackson as Con Man, not even remotely close, but I would kinda place early Rev Al there to some degree......but we currently have the ultimate Con Man right now..??
