I don't get it. Why not? Your paying to go there why can't you participate in sports? Can you play in the chess club? Can you join the school play? Yearbook? Is it just school and go home? Honestly asking and I know there aren't many who do it but I don't get the sports ban especially if your paying? It's like going to Wisconsin Dells, you can stay at the resort but you can't use the waterslides.
I believe it is to stop illegal poaching. You have to move to play.

Why "should" they be going to the local public school? Because that's where their tax dollars go?

The school doesn't own the kid/family.

The parents can send their kid to whatever school they want to for whatever reason they want to.
This would crush property values. Major selling point for homes from March through August is school district and if districting were open, then a home in Wheeling would have the same value as a home in Arlington Heights, and we all know that's not the case. Local districts matter.

A great example of winning without the best talent is Cary Grove. Yes they have a few studs but overall they are undersized and get the most out of their kids. That to me is great coaching. What other schools don't have 7-8 D1 players but still win a lot of games? I can't think of too many other schools like that. Don't get me wrong I think guys like Lynch and Holecek are great coaches, but they are already a step ahead with the talent they have. My question is, could you put them at a solid 8A public school like Barrington and would they be perennial semi-finalists/finalists? I'm not sure.

I guess the better question is what coaches don't win but have great talent at their school? Public or Private.
Lynch may be, or may not be, an elite coach. Winning at MC is no barometer since the last three HC's have all won State there.

Evanston and West Chicago have effectively ended that argument for me. Burzawa went from championships at Driscoll to whatever he did at Evanston. Same with Bob Stone at JCA to whatever he did at West Chicago.

The #1 job of a HS head coach is to get or keep talent. Thats a large part of me saying he’s the best coach in the state. He’s doing a hell of job.
Most coaches arent allowed to "get talent". They have to coach whoever is walking the halls.

I honestly have no clue how good of a coach Lynch is. Record says he's at least pretty good.

I will say that there's likely coaches in other conferences working magic just to get their teams to 5 wins each season. Are they not great coaches?

What never gets talked about is the coaches.

Jordan Lynch is the best coach is the state. Before him, it was John Holecek. That's the main reason these schools are who they are.

Inserra has beaten Loyola numerous times in big games (quarterfinals, semifinals, state titles) but has lost (3) in a row and only scored a combined 20pts in those (3) games.

To me, he's just coming off as a whiner and a bad look for a really great coach.
Put Jordan Lynch at a CPS school, is he the same coach? Absolutely not, recruiting helps. Btw he is a great coach but just saying

So did Dan Sharp suddenly become a great coach once he got to JCA? Why wasn't he successful at Minooka?

Sharp wildly successful at JCA, not so much at Minooka.

Burzawa loses only 1 game in 3 years at Driscoll with 3 titles. 17 years at Evanston and has never made it out of the first round.

Stone, one title and an .808 winning % at JCA. At West Chicago, never more than 5 wins in a season and .264 winning %.

I'm sensing a trend. You're right, it is beneficial when a coach can go "get" talent.

That's an easy shot to fire. Of course he is the same coach but of course he doesn't have the same success. Put Ben Johnson at a CPS school and he wouldn't have success. Would they make those schools better? Absolutely. Won't be a Disney Movie ending but 100% guaranteed he would make them a better team. Give him a team like Simeon, Morgan Park, or Kenwood and give him a couple years to bring in his system and they are making a run.

So another school where he could openly recruit from the entire city of Chicago? Let's test him like others before him. How would he do at an Evanston or Minooka where he has a greater risk of losing his top talent to private schools versus recruiting them in.

It goes without saying he's done a great job at MC, but to deem him truly great let's see what what he can do when he can't build Chicago all-star teams.

You've been around this world awhile, Did your strong hatred of Private schools exist in the 80's, 90's, 00's and even early 10's when the Public schools were winning titles regularly and competing with the CCL's or is this just recent? I've seen MC lose State Titles to Wheaton North, Maine South twice, Prospect, and WWS and go down in the semifinals to Glenbard North, Hinsdale Central, St. Charles North....and I don't how we lost those games being able to bring in players with our unfair advantage?

Stop! He's won 5 State Finals in 7 seasons and we can't deem him a truly great coach?? He has to take a team from Rags to Riches to be deemed truly great? The 5 rings and three undefeated seasons mean nothing? Same go for Holecek? Let's go back little further was Lenti truly great? Gordie Gillespie? 😂.

I’m one of the biggest Catholic supporters on this board. Dave is 100 % correct. Inside the Chicago metro area the boundary should be 10-15 miles, possibly 5-10. The Maine South graduate signs are everywhere in my neighborhood and mostly the result of divorced parents. And if MS and LWE and a few others didn’t go find some guys it would have been a few boring years. That’s all.

For a long time there have been a lot of Main South Hawks in the Taft attendance area. I'm guessing the problem is those same kids are now heading to private schools?
Ghost, I’ve long contended that if Taft could get all the talent that grew up in the neighborhood that played at LA, MS. ND, SP, DPA …they’d be perennial contenders. No doubt the same at Morgan Park or Agg?

I love the "well we lost that game that one time" argument. Stop making it seem like this is a recent anomaly. Yes, public schools have won the majority of the titles, as they should; they make up 85% of the IHSA member schools. Since the beginning, in 1974 there have been 348 state champions crowned across all classes in football and private schools account for 126 titles. So only 15% of the schools are responsible for 36% of the championships. Doesn't matter what decade, it's not new.

I believe you were the one who brought up the Phil Jackson example, so what's your answer? Is it the coach or the players? Evanston and Minooka are 8A schools, so there's plenty of kids in the building, who are regular playoff teams, so hardly rags to riches. 5 rings and 3 undefeated seasons is absolutely incredible, but the question will always linger as to whether he could do it without an all star team. I love how the other coaches you mention also only coached in the CCL. What about coaches like Mike Noll or Larry McKeon who had success at multiple schools with just kids from the district or coaches like Reents who makes his system work with whoever gets off the bus and not bringing in kids that fit his system.

Find me a coach listed in the link that had success in the CCL and at a public school.

I think Marist could handle fielding a team within these boundaries. We're talking radius to play sports, private schools can still get non sport playing students from 30 miles.1786074696117.png

Bottom line is this thread will shortly spin out of control and be deleted. Don't like the current system? Don't like schools recruiting? Change it. Put up separating public/Catholic on a member wide ballot....vote and be done with it forever. Live by the decision or leave the IHSA. Simple. Most important info from this story? Expect the 30 mile rule to be up for a change (and here is a clue it's not going to increase) sooner rather than later.

You didn't answer the question. Did you always have this strong hatred of private schools or is it more recent?

Question will always linger? Nobody is asking that question. He was coaching at NIU and got the chance to return to his Alma Mater and coach. He's a Heisman Finalist and has a outstanding Football IQ. Most football fans in IL respect his coaching abilities and realize he's a great coach, he doesn't have to take on a public school position to prove that to anyone. These hypothetical "what if" scenarios you bring up are really bizarre. He's an amazing Coach, if your lucky enough to meet with him someday and talk shop you'll realize it.

Let's play hypothetical game one more time. Could the Morris head coach go into MC this year, install his offense, deal with the numerous players college recruiting with NIL money in their future and their parents and keep them all grounded and focused and guide them to a State Championship with the schedule MC has? Dealing with ESL and ESPN games against unknown New Jersey Championship teams then the CCL Blue schedule and then the playoffs with everyone gunning for you and if you win, you had it easy who can't win with those players and if you lose....get ready for every sports writer to and social media influencer and podcaster to blow up your phone.....takes a great coach to handle that pressure that comes with it. Oh and on Sundays go out and travel watching grade school games and then try to fight out 7 other schools gunning for the same players and then hearing "How did we lose him to Br Rice???" from upset fan base....

Also, with Phil Jackson, how many Championships did Bulls win under Collins? How many did the Lakers win after Reilly left before Jackson got there? Yes you need the players but you need a great coach to guide them.

What about the 5 miles on our map that is under water? Do you get to extend that on dry land? Lawyers will definitely make a case for it! 😂😂
I don’t put maps up maps and blue circles. I leave that to 4A and Thor. Just saying what’s a reasonable distance? Public or Private? Let’s not pretend both aren’t playing the same game.

It wasn't always like this. Rules were set and followed. You transfer you sit a year, private to private, or public to private. No exceptions. Public to Public requires a move. Not a temporary rental of a studio apartment, a full move of your permanent residence. Yes things were missed and people maneuvered their way around some landmines but mostly, people went by the rules.....then people started saying "I don't like the rules, I'm going to sue" Loopholes were found and if not they were made and then families just decided to go off the NCAA rules instead of the IHSA rules....they got taken over. Its almost impossible for them to keep track of who is where and doing what across the State. Same rules still apply and people just don't care 😂. If they get questioned or denied they sue and they can't fight all these cases.....It really is out of hand and so is the NCAA.....the inmates are running the asylum! It will never go back to where it was. They lost the reigns and got bucked off the horse.

I don't have a hatred, Morris and JCA have always had a mutual respect during their playoff rivalry, just pointing out facts that refute things people say about there not being that much of an imbalance or how it's only been recently lopsided.

Don't see how it's bizarre hypothetical considering it was brought up earlier how coaches who have coached at public schools had little to no success, but when they were at privates they were wildly successful. Seems natural to consider whether it could be done or not.

Poor hypothetical considering I'm no fan of the Morris coach and don't think he could win a state title with U of I's roster. Dealing with all Lynch has to deal with as the MC coach is his fulltime job, plus I feel like it's safe to say he delegates duties to others on staff as well. The Morris coach is also the Vice Principal and has to deal with all the nonsense that comes with that position rather than focusing on football alone. How many of MC's coaches also teach versus being able to focus on football fulltime?

And … if we put the same emphasis on education as we put on sports we’d be a much better society… and if I read a bit in high school I’d have been a doctor or lawyer rather than a tradesman. It worked out well in spite of my laziness.

What's with the cartography hate???

Not hate… dislike… you and Thor get buggy and start posting blue circles. I really have a problem when Thor posts immediately after a team wins a championship. Give it a day. Or two, let the team celebrate thier day. He makes it about him and his agenda. He does him…sleep well
