Ive been looking at the LSU deal, it's very interesting. I think others are right that they expect to get any profit that the investors made as TAF donations, but it's got me thinking - would I invest in MSU athletics right now?

You break even at a 6-6 football season. Every win over .500 is 8% profit. Every loss under .500 is a loss of 5%.

You break even with an NIT bid for men's and women's basketball. An NCAA Tournament bid is a 10% profit, with a 3% for every NCAAT win. Not making the NIT is a loss of 10%

You break even with a regional host or road regional win in baseball. A Super Regional is an 5% profit and a CWS is an extra 3%

You get a 2% boost for every NCAA Tournament made in other sports.

Last year, MSU Athletics would have lost 12%. I'm invested but I'm calling for leadership changes.

State has been very good to my boys & have put both in a very comfortable position to succeed, along with their will & work ethic.

Idk which will have the better resume after graduation, but they will both be more impressive than most. We're pleased with our return on investment.

100% agree. Both of mine earned enough in their first year to cover 4 years tuition.

I think the “investment” angle plays to people with disposable income who just want to feel like they own part of their athletic program when in reality they don’t. It’s just another donation with a different type of of ego stroke attached to it.

We can’t get the average fan or posters on message boards to donate monthly to the BI… let’s start there before a PE.

Would I put money in a LSU-style MSU athletics fund?

Absolutely not

My investments are for my retirement which is a few years away.

I can retire somewhat comfortably or invest in State. I can’t do both.

As much as some Packers like to grouse about folks in education earning six figures, I’m not close to that level.

But if you have investments and an income significant enough to set aside $100K and not worry about you & your family’s future *and* you feel joy from doing that, then it might be something to at least initially consider.

(Of course— We all know I wouldn't be approached unless it’s by someone completely ignorant or Bulldawg77…)

Last year's resulting 12% loss really shouldn't factor into this decision, because it's pre-investment... The point of this whole deal would be to bring in large amounts of cash annually that will - theoretically - make favorable results on the field more likely in every sport.

Hell, I've given quite a bit over the years out of pocket, just hoping it helps us win some games, and I get zero return. Would I put some in now, that should (a) help us recruit better; and (b) maybe give me a little ROI as well?

Yup, probably would.

I was fully prepared to make a post about how these pitifully low expectations aren’t going to ever generate those kind of returns, but when I then read the part about last year resulting in a 12% loss in spite of those low expectations, I lost the will to do so.

It’s interesting on the fan side, and maybe there’s a way they’re vetting who can invest, but it could create some weird incentives. Certain people could be incentivized to hurt the brand at times to make it an undervalued asset that they then purchase at a discount

17 no. In what world could you possibly look at State, or more specifically, our football program and put your money behind that. It starts and ends with shiny face. This is a kind of topic that makes me want to get my laptop out and spew paragraphs about. If we’re not the first team to fire our head coach this year, Mississippi State will never get another dollar from me.

Not sure how anyone could invest in a college athletic program and expect to get any sort of positive return under the current setup. The price of success goes up every year with no predictability, so how can an athletic department pay out a return on investment and continue to succeed?

A team wins a national championship in football and they are a champion until midnight and then the process starts over, sometimes even before that championship is won. Just look at Cignetti’s contract renegotiation that was executed before they even won. Maybe they already had that built into their longterm financial planning expecting success in 2025, but I doubt it.

I probably would. Wouldn’t necessarily expect big returns on it, but I could stomach an “investment” a lot easier than donating any large amount to NIL.
Maybe MSU should sell bonds…
