The best part is Nolan's film is a huge success and might end up crossing $1 billion dollars. The whiners and those crying will always be whining.
Golden Corral is a very successful restaurant chain. Has nothing to do with the quality of the food.

Nolan's own public statements of intentionally injecting wokeness into the story.

Yes, we know your opinion of him "injecting wokeness" into the story-

and you've whined about a black person playing a role and a trans individual playing a role. One trick pony.

The people that continue to eat there enjoy the quality of the food.

That you don't is irrelevant to everyone but you.

and given all the right wing predictions that the film would flop, it's very enjoyable that they were 100% wrong

So fun knowing these idiots were so wrong

and this post was embedded in a Fox News story about the movie likely being a "big disaster"

LOL

I dont think "idiots" raises to the level of "bigot" etc, so I dont think we can call this one yet.

Who is making it? I always love those types if done correctly.
It's been out for a couple of months now and recent reviews are good, plus anecdotal reports I've heard have been complimentary. I'm not familiar with the people behind it.

The argument over the movie Odyssey, that it is not historically accurate is truly amusing.

Let us start with one immutable fact. The Odyssey is a work of FICTION.

The feigned outrage for the casting of the Helen of Troy character is also amusing.
Helen of Troy per Greek mythology is the daughter of Zeus. Obviously no such person ever existed.

With all the challenges and tribulations life has to offer, becoming upset over the casting of a fictional story should not be worth any consideration.
I agree, well said!

The historical accuracy argument being offered up by the lefties is a limp-wristed red herring.

By Nolan's own public admission, he made a woke movie that is intentionally unfaithful to the original work.

That's why folks are criticizing it. Not over any qualms about historical inaccuracy.
why did you label someone as a lefty, for saying the film is not faithful to the story?

Isnt it kind of obvious that its a debate that has fallen down political lines though?
but why does some do that, it shouldn't be either a righty or lefty thing when merely giving feedback on a film. I have not seen the film yet, but am planning to as I hear it is pretty good.

Perhaps "some" wouldn't if it weren't for Hollywood being over the top liberal and having an irresistible tendency to force feeding their ideology on us every chance they get... whether it be subliminal or in your face. The fact that many are naive or will play dumb to that fact makes it necessary to mention where the story lands in ideology land on review. I for one can appreciate the heads up because I have sat through enough movies where I ended up wondering why the heck did I watch that and how can I get my time back.

The inclusion of the trans actor did it, imo.

I noted this another thread about college being a scam. It split neatly down political lines too.

I think the issue has less to do with "historical" fidelity (a pretext) than the perception that the revised treatment hints of a "wokist" intent. I haven't seen it and have no plans to see it, but from comments I've been reading, perceived "wokism" seems to be driving objections I've noticed.

For me, it's not perceived woke-ism. Nolan stated that he changed the ending b/c Homer's ending was too misogynistic. That's Woke 101.

Do you ever watch something on purpose that might challenge your opinions/beliefs or give you a perspective that you haven't considered before? Or do you only watch things that reinforce your opinion?

in the original Homer, the story concludes with Telemachus hanging a group of slave girls who had been sexually involved with the men.

When asked by Time about the film's exploration of "man as beast," I love the way Samantha [Morton] has played the part. Talking about choices of adaptation, the end of the poem is so grim and so misogynistic, I had to exclude some of that material. But I didn't want to completely take it off the table in terms of what it is saying about men and the way they wage war."

Good choice by Nolan changing the ending to be more optimistic instead of one where girls are hung because they were involved with some men, but the men who chose to be sexually involved simply go on their way.

So a long winded, unnecessary post that could be summed up with: "18istheman is right".

Time is short. I try to avoid politics in my leisure time. Watching a movie is a choice and given a choice, I'll watch things that I think I will enjoy. It's not so much the message I try to avoid as it is the act of using something like a movie or story and conforming it to a narrative where in most cases the writer or producer evidently feels I need to see it... as if they know what the little people need to see. It is that 'act' or better yet, 'manipulation' I protest and I will not spend my time or money supporting it. I'll give you an example of something I can not avoid but would like too... commercials using mixed race couples. Now I have nothing against mixed race couples but that doesnt mean I need to see those couples in half the commercials I see that feature couples on television. But somewhere along the line someone decided I did. So... it will be a cold day in hell before I buy any product that made those decisions... again not for using them but for the decision to use them.

avoid politics or avoid politics you don't agree with? I know few that avoid politics. I know a lot more on all sides that try to avoid politics they don't agree with

Using your example, almost 20% of american couples are mixed race- and a much higher percentage is involved when you consider their families and friends. This number is growing fast- especially with those under age 30.

There is nothing wrong with mixed race couples so what message are you protesting?

Why wouldn't they have commercials showing mixed race couples? I can't understand how that bothers anyone in the least. I see more commercials with same sex race couples.

Did you ever watch Bonanza or Gunsmoke? Both often had messages in them that many would consider political for the time.

I am always perplexed by people (and I am not talking about you here) that think only one side tries to send messages in movies, and music. I think the issue is we are prone to hear the message when we don't agree with it and ignore it when it reinforces our opinions.

I just told you it wasn't the message I was protesting... it was the act of pushing a narrative I protest. It's not all that hard to understand... just takes a little reading comprehension. That's all.

I saw The Odyssey in IMAX and I enjoyed it. The only thing I didn’t like was how loud it was, almost unbearable. I didn't know the story very well and I try to go into movies with an open mind and not let the so-called critics ruin it for me. Unfortunately in our time, most movies have their woke moments so I just brush it off. I wish I would’ve seen in it in the 70mm format.
Is IMAX like a three stroy movie theater?

I saw the movie last night after dinner with my family, after the film I asked my 26 year old daughter about the controversy over the transgender actor. As I could not identify which character was being portrayed by a transgender, my daughter informed me who it was. At the end of the day, I say so what, I enjoyed the film, however due to the length of the film, for us older guys, take it easy on the beverages with the popcorn, as you may find yourself missing some of the film:)

I've already stated that I haven't seen this film and have no current plans to see it. I'm just not interested.

This I'll say: license is license, but in the eyes of a purist, license might be seen as a bastardization.. Deviation from what was originally written in a book, a play, or a poem as to storyline, theme, or moral constitutes at least a degradation in the eyes of a purist. That would be the case whether the work were "Gone with the Wind, "Lonesome Dove", or the Bible.

Now it's possible that I might at some point see the retreatment and enjoy it, even if it were an outright bastardization. But if a purist were to disagree with my opinion on literalistic, technical grounds, I'm going to cede him or her that right. Truthfully, I'm probably not going to concern myself with his/her motivation, either.

you see them because 20% of the couples in the country are mixed race. FOr you not to see them, someone would have to be deliberately excluding them.

Do you avoid the family focused films and tv shows, partisan news programs that some writer or producer has decided you need to see?

The "purists" regarding this movie that I've read about seem to have really enjoyed it outside of a few writers that teach it at universities.

But the overwhelming majority of films are going to take artistic license with a film. After all, most don't want to regurgitate the same thing someone else has already done. There is no challenge there usually.

The great thing about films is everyone's opinion is fair.

Agree. This is not a new take. People have argued character selections and deviations from story lines most of my life.

I saw the film though. It was okay. Possibly take a nap to it when nothing else is on the tube in the future. I would argue, Matt Damon was just as bad a choice as the others mentioned. As well, Robert Pattinson. WTF?? Lol.

Okay, but my post was about why the movie is getting a political response. The trans actor is a big reason, imo.

I do agree that sometimes they hide it well.

I will take your advice on the beverages, but no promise on the popcorn.

@Blues man, its like he didn't even read your post but decided to write a rebuttal to something you never said, right?

There are several others of us who've had similar interactions. I guess some people need to invent drama to react to if its not provided for them.

But as long as we're at it, id like to discuss you're anger over commercials with live animals in them. It makes as much sense......

I did not go see it. For those of us with enlarged prostates :(, it's not easy to sit through an entire Chris Nolan movie. His Oppenheimer movie was challenging enough to sit all through. Think I will wait for it to come on Netflix.

:D Thanks Jacque. I see the commercial for, I think it's called, "Super Beta Prostate". But I'm scheduled for my annual prostate exam next month and, I will then ask my urologist for a prescription medicine. I'm pretty certain there is a prescription medicine for that. For the life of me I don't know why he didn't prescribe such a med when he said I have an enlarged prostate.
