poll--Counter-service tipping

When a cashier flips the iPad around asking for a tip at a counter-service business, what do you do?

Man, I miss my HROT "Tipping Is Out of Control" thread. :(

NOw, I'll absolutely throw a couple of bucks in a counter tip jar if someone genuinely goes above and beyond. That's been around forever and doesn't really bother me. Heck, I really enjoy blessing someone with a really YUGE tip when they least expect it. It's fun!

But there's no way I'm clicking 20%, 25%, or 30% because someone turned an iPad around after handing me a burger or a coffee. I honestly don't even know if those electronic tips make it to the employees. More importantly, it's literally asking customers to do what the employer should be doing in the first place...paying their employees.

IMO, whoever invented the touchscreen guilt-trip deserves a throat punch.

I’ll throw 50 cents or a dollar extra on at my local breakfast burrito place or a coffee shop. Anywhere else, no.

My wife is the opposite. She tips on everything and it has caused more than a few arguments in the past.

It really is hard not to when they're staring you in the face and then you have to wait for your order.

Tonight for example. Went to the Sox vs Yanks game. Paid for Club tickets which gave us an "in seat waiter". I ordered and then added a hotdog and piece of pizza. 4 innings later the dude finally shows up calling for last call, I'm like "I never got my first order". Blah,.blah, blah they're super behind. What I ordered should be a 5 min walk and grab. Most basic staples of sporting events. He said he'll comp everything AFTER I paid him and tipped him. Bad service still expects a tip. It's out of control.

I do tip my local hospitality folks big because they take care of us..

My wife's psycho step mom used to put the tip on the edge of the table right when they sat down. Told the server that was their tip and their job to earn it. ...she pull back money each time they did something she didn't like. SHe's nuts, but I don't think she was necessarily wrong either. If 20%+ is the expectation regardless of service, then just get rid of tipping, increase the price to compensate an pay the employees. I'm tired of tips. Do any other countries still participate in this?

I agree with that. I wouldn't go as far as your MIL and torture them, but 20% being floor is done. If they suck they get a minimal tip (their wages are super low) but I'm done giving the default for average service to those who suck and continue to do so.

I did say something to the supervisor tonight. I'm not trying to be a Karen, but if you are going to advertise that I don't have to get out of my seat to get food and drink, I'm very interested. St Louis has All Inclusive ticket that I paid less for than tonight. Bad service just ruins the whole f'ing experience and I'm done rewarding for it

I am a sucker and tip all the time...

Until this week. It dawned on me how pathetically sad it is. Today, I got a candy bar between 9s. I picked it up, I brought it to the counter and there was the tip with the lowest price being 22% on a $4 candy bar.

For the second time this week, I hit decline and did not care. I tipped when it was against my better judgment as they didn't do anything above and beyond. I don't get tips, or bonuses, or anything when I do my absolute best or come in early/stay late to help others. Why do I get nickel and dimed?

I DO want to tip waiters or others who actually perform a service and are depending on tips. Not someone behind a register.

I tip 20% for counter service. I just consider it a service charge, and I don’t give it a second thought. My baristas and bartenders know me and treat me well. I appreciate that.

I believe in karma and tipping is a great way to get good karma. I always tip well at restaurants and at counters throw a buck in or 10%. Funny thing is my son now in college is working at one of these places where they make to order custom single size fast pizza almost like a sub shop makes a sandwich and the tips go in a community pot and definitely boosts his hourly rate nicely like 4-5 bucks more an hour. So proof of concept - I now have a son making 100s extra to put himself through college from a counter tip jar I always donated too from day one when they showed up.

I will also add for some local places if you tip well and staff get to know this, you will get the hook up too on larger portions or some free things slipped in and how they treat you.

Local cafe? Yes because I go every day and like all the people that work there and they occasionally hook me up with stuff. It is nice walking in and them seeing me and having my order ready before I even get up to the register to pay.

other places? Nah foh

I would dine out with her once, see that act and never dine with her again.

I quit going to most places that want a tip for counter service. The one place I really like that has counter service I try and remember to bring cash and toss loose change or a dollar in the jar.

I would like a state law that outlaws tipping requests for counter service.

A locally owned coffee shop after I ordered a a specialty coffee and they drew a little va.gina in the foam: Yes

Sounds like a way to get some special service spit right onto your food.

She is insufferable. Her husband, Mrs. Alaska's biological father, is worse. He turns every conversation into something political. Heck, if the service is slow at said resturant, he'll make it political. ...I digress.

Ya, it's getting out of hand. Again, nothing wrong with throwing a few bucks in the tip jar at the Baskin Robbins for the kid who went above and beyond to make your kiddo's experience better. But this constant, everywhere you go, in every situation expectation to pay 20%+ over for anything and everything is ridiclous. Quit calling it a tip. Just call it a surcharge.
