Maybe he should train his staff to ask folks do they have any coupons or discounts when ringing it up

Or maybe have a prominent sign displayed saying discount for seniors

If a senior has to ask if you give a discount then you are doing a poor job in your advertising

Avoid petty stuff like this by good management

It goes both ways. I also realize many elderly are not as sharp as they once were. Look at many of our politicians!

Sad thing is the other partner ME has an issue trying to help and our two kids are copncerned and try to be empathetic but again dementia brings angse and I suspect that guy in Culvers may be going through it

And a big reason I think the crackdown on immigration is a mistake - with my folks in first assisted living then eventually hospice, is around 75% of staff seemed to be immigrants. Not sure who is going to take care of our old people if Stephen Miller gets his way.

It's not the responsibility of the person at the register to ask the question IMO.
I use it when I remember to ask but never understood the entitlement really.

As much as I abhor illegal immigration I would be all in on a program where people would be trained in medical facilities in other countries and then when top notch be asked to come to US on work permit

I've been behind a person that was offered a senior discount that took offense. Often customer service employees can't win for losing. Seems people are always looking for a reason to get angry these days. The employee in the OP did everything right in my opinion.

Stopped off for a burger after golf and this older couple was at the next table.
A young kid (asst manager) came over and said he understood they’d complained about not automatically getting the senior discount. He apologized and said they are happy to give it but do not automatically offer it because some people have gotten upset if they staff assumes the customers are eligible.

This older man wouldn’t let it go - rude as hell to the kid and claiming Culver’s just wanted to rip off senior citizens, how he was going to call the owner, etc etc.

Two questions-

1. Why are so many older people such jerks?
2. Is there any situation in which this would bother you?

I worked in the full service restaurant business from 1975 to 1996 doing every job from dishwasher to store manager. I still consider those jobs and that time of my life to be the hardest I've ever worked. So even though I rarely go out to eat any more, or do fast food - I have a lot of empathy for every employee I come across.

I have a simple way of behaving whenever I eat out or go to a bar - make the job on them as absolutely easy as possible. Know what you're ordering, know how much it costs (so there's no check sticker shock surprises), please and thank you to everybody you interact with.

Using this method, ever since I left the business 30 years ago, never once had an issue from the biggest dive bars to your average Culver's to the ritziest of full service restaurants.


As for senior citizen discounts, I'm 64 so I haven't really pondered how I'm going to handle it when the time comes. It doesn't help that most people seem to believe I look younger than my age...so we'll see.
