They had the 13th hardest schedule in the sec and were the THREE seed in the sec tournament. Then they beat ONE team in the entire post season that wasn’t a double digit seed and got boat raced by the first good team they played.
So yes , he massively underachieved . Cal has been to his last final eight.
In 5 years Musselman took Arkansas to 3 consecutive sweet sixteens and back to back final eights . That is something Cal will never match there.
now go and review all of UKs SEC championships, SECT titles and any sweet 16, elite 8 run.....lets remove any of them where we didnt play great teams since they dont count. since the SEC has been mostly garbage its entire existence in basketball....i guess no of them reall count then if we are going to apply the same standard.

Weren’t you the guy that called UK wins “lucky” when the other team missed shots in the second half? You didn’t give UK the same grace in losses where they shot like crap. Can we take a quick peak at those standards.

My unpopular opinion is that Calipari actually overperformed with some of his rosters. All the “talent” in the world is not going to get it done if that talent hasn’t ripened into being some of the best most efficient and impactful basketball players and leaders in CBB – and Calipari didn’t have a lot of that.
With some of those rosters it may have actually been a smart thing to just kind of roll the ball out on offense (not exactly what Calipari did, but he did run some of the most dumbed down simple stuff) and push effort on defense. I don’t care where a player was drafted. I don’t care what a player eventually did in the NBA. That’s irrelevant to where he was in his development at UK.
Now, I still wanted Calipari gone because he wasn’t building rosters to give UK the best chance to win championships – and he was doing so knowingly/intentionally – but I think he gets somewhat of a bad rap on coaching when there were roster reasons for the approach.

now do the 90s, 80s, and 50s....that 98 title uk went through juggernauts st louis, 6 seed ucla, standford and utah...not very good teams so it shouldnt mean as much right right.....pull the banner?

Standford was 30-5, Duke 32-4, Utah was 30-4. What the hell? Maybe you're looking at "brand names"? But those teams were good, they just weren't wearing Duke, UNC, Kansas, or UCONN jerseys.
yup. just like folks are leaving out that cal won the SECT.....this is all stupid. at the end of the day.....you are what your record says you are. ark finished 2nd in the 3rd best conference, won the conference tournament, and got to a sweet 16, finished in the top 15. barnes made an elite 8 for the 3rd year in a row.
Yeah. The cold hard truth is both Calipari and Barnes had better seasons than Pope. And a few head to head wins means nothing.
if beating teams like ul and texas tech dont cout because they are at home why cant beating standofrd, utah not count because those programs are crap? this is all non sense because a large portion of the fan base are so pissed at our current state and trajectory they cant let go of a guy who left here 2+ years ago and will continue to blame him for every little thing.

Arkansas beat an average Vandy team to win the sec tournament and two stiffs to get to the sweet 16 before getting their doors blown off by the first actual good team they played in post season.

all of uks accomplishments are totally legit. anyone elses and its reason X, Y or Z as why its not that impressive. sound argument. you won me over.
Arkansas has a more complete and talented roster this year. They don’t have a player as good as Acuff on offense, but they’ll be a much improved defensive team, with a 5 deep front court instead of 3 like last year. He’s still relying on freshman, but they’re more physically mature freshman than he recruited in the past.
Arkansas could be a 9 seed or 1 seed… I think both fan bases can agree that preseason rankings don’t mean sh*t. Cal has plenty of faults, but he’s not near as bad of a coach as some make him out to be on this board.

Stanford and Utah were great teams in '98 and you are still trying to leave out Duke.
This is a quality post but I remember watching those games and Duke definitely wore Duke jerseys.
Until you have to actually coach that talent, there is the problem, best recruiter that ever lived imo but he lacks too many things in coaching, no adjustments etc etc, plus the fact he runs 2 plays over & over, maybe 3 if you count the pick & roll for an occasional lob. Set a screen out top & let the guard go one on one, then the floppy action crap. When coaches defend his 2 plays, he's clueless as what to do next, counts on his players to make a play. How many times did we see how bad he sucks at drawing up plays? Too damn many. Mark Pope couldn't hold his jock strap recruiting players but he's forgotten more offense than Calipari will ever know.

I still wouldn't count him out, when you get as much talent as Cal does, you don't have to be a great coach. Big time talent make plays.
I'm not a Cal fan, but his recruiting has made him a HOF coach, and he has won a lot of games.
