Last two years for Mike = 7-17, 3-13 in a weak conference. Got a 3rd year at FSU.

Can Matt have the same record starting here on out and still get 3 more years?

No...Rhule is done this year. I know people think that the buyout will save him but that money is already there and ready to go.

If we win 7 or more games this year Rhule will be back. Win 6 and his seat will be red red molten hot. Win 5 or less with our relatively easy schedule this year outside of the big three (OSU, Oregon, IU) and he will be gone.
The free radical in all of this that makes it hard to predict is the quality of the new coaches. But I am pessimistic and I therefore think Rhule will be gone. We don’t have a proven QB or running back. And our defensive line doesn’t strike fear into anyone. Plus, Rhule is a wretched in-game coach.

I am extremely worried about Rhule’s softness rubbing off on Wade

The GT coach is a tough, intense dude who is committed to running the football and imposing his will

Rhule is the polar opposite

Hopefully it really was Geep who produced the lion’s share of those GT OL results and he’s up to the task of bringing a total mindset shift to the entire team because that’s the only way the ship will start to turn

Unfortunately we know how Rhule reacts to intense dudes who bring their own culture

If there is money be collected to buy out a coach then that money should be transferred to NIL. Instead of trying to set the program back to the starting line, maybe help improve the program. I can not think of any game that can be won by being constantly being sent back to go.

It is not being sent back to go.

Coaches have done this amazing job of convincing fans of a few things.

1. That they work 900 hours a week during the season and 800 hours a week during the off season.

2. That they are always sleepig in their office because of all the work they do.

3. That it somehow takes players 3-4 years to learn the plays and calls.

None of this is true.

Rhule drives away his best coaches which is why he keeps guys like Barthel and Satt around long term.

I have perused all of the college football magazines and nary a one even has Rhule on a warm seat let alone a hot seat. Most make the comment that Nebraska hadn't been to a bowl game in 8 or 9 years and Rhule has taken Nebraska to back to back bowl games. I guess we will see what happens.

The rest of the schools in the B1G will pay the Nebraska AD to keep Lil Matty as HC.

Nebraska is like the last kid picked for the grade school baseball game.

Sooooooo the rest of the schools are scared and want to keep NU down? Thank you, thank you for proving my point! That is exactly what I have been saying, that is why when you are not getting to the top, you fire your coach. Instead of keeping them around forever. Like your fan base has done. #7.44

Okay, so can you finally tell us the last meaningful game that iowa played in?

Only the extension is keeping the tabloids from saying that MAtt is on the Hot Seat

He should be with this being written about him for 2026:
Per ESPN
* Number of wins: 6.7
* Number of losses: 5.3
* Win-out chance: 0.0%
* Chance of reaching six wins: 74.5%
* Chance of winning the Big Ten: 0.7%
* Chance of making the College Football Playoff: 7.3%
* Chance of making the national championship game: 0.4%
* Chance of winning the national championship: 0.1%

Please share (no sarcasm). Give us names. And where is the money being kept? This is information only a half dozen or less people know about. We're lucky to have someone in the know. Do you work for Sandhills Publishing? Or you probably know someone who does.

We are in a bad place. Most have figured out that Rhule sucks. But because of the buyout, we can’t fire him yet. So we have to wait. While we are waiting, we notice that he has a nice class in 2027 and somehow hope they all get here and contribute to more team success in the future. But then we remember that Rhule sucks, 5-7 for 2026 could easily happen, that 2027 class would then not stick, and we will be in the same place next year but with Rhule making everyone’s off-season hot seat lists.

There is no need to wait. The buyout hardly drops from year to year...NU brass is not going to wait 4 more seasons AND have to extend him again during that time...just to fire him and save 15 million dollars in a buy.

That contract was created with the buyout money available.

Can you list a team who is openly keeping a coach because of a massive buyout? You cannot wait for a contact to expire, a coach cannot recruit without an extended contract and you can't get such a contract without a large buyout. Donations are sitting at 80 million. Lets say that they drop by 10% each year he is losing....you are looking at nearly 40 million in lost donations in four years. That is just donations...nothing to do with other revenue streams, or bargaining position in the big 10. There is also a feedback loop cycling the longer we lose...old people donate, old people donate because of winning in the 90s, old people die, young people do not donate because of losing in the modern day. Donations dry up. We have to win now to win in the next decade.

Is is inevitable that the big 10 and sec breaks apart into haves and have nots. This will likely be determined by revenue, losing fans right now means we will lose a position at the big boy table in 10+ years, as donations will be gone. It would be a very Nebraska thing to do, to hire bad coach after bad coach and then be the only college team to suddenly go "fiscally responsible" when they need to be pushing for relevance in this time of upheaval.

This is spot on.

If Rhule has a lame season (likely) unless for some reason he decides to redo his contract for less money (not likely at all and makes no sense), it means that while his buyout drops a bit from the end of this season to the end of next season, it is not enough to matter AND you also could end up with a situation where after next season, you have to extend him again.

Like I said, the money is there, the contract was created with the money already there.

I was just asking if he actually knew who had the money and where it was since it seemed like he knew. (All of us can assume that they have the money) You make a good point, but recruiting is less of a factor today because of the unlimited free agency in college football. Actually, the recruiting factor should be helping Rhule this year at least but probably not as much as it would have years ago.

Also a good point, but this is nothing new. The win now mindset has hurt the program because former coaches have made bad decisions when they are in win now mode and leadership has made even worse decisions. It's a continual erosion.

I don't follow it close enough to argue with any of this. I don't see it an inevitable that the SEC will split up or the Big 10. I always thought that as the overall revenue in a league goes up the added value of that extra $1 million in donations means less and less. But I could be wrong. All I know is going 1-30 in games against ranked opponents sure doesn't seem like we have a seat at the big boy table.

Sorry, there just seemed to be this weird idea from others (not you) that NU wrote that contract up with literally no money available for the buyout.

I think we are top 5-10 in revenue...still have a national fan base and still high engagement rate when it comes to eyes seeing ads and such. I think NIL donations will begin to taper as the money dries up across the sport, it was a new thing, a wild west sort of thing where rich people felt they could really change the outcome for their team.

But there is only so much money, and the younger generations just do not care as much, nor are they as wealthy. There will be a limiting factor and the top teams will cut lose the teams like Rutgers, Maryland, Mississippi State, Kentucky...the whole big 12..teams who need revenue sharing to survive. Do we really need 65 teams to decide a national champion when 30 of those are being subsidized to compete? Two 16 team conferences, four 8 team divisions. Four division winners, 4 wild cards. 8 team playoff. Bring back regional divisions...and maybe the "losers" of this system can play in a lower tier and earn a promotion based on revenue and donations. Possibly a promotion and demotion system like soccer.

It seems crazy but who would have thought that Oregon would be playing Indiana in a playoff game with their fourth team running back as their starter, who had to remove himself from a transfer portal because Oregon didn't have enough players to attempt to win a national title.

I can remember years ago, talking with friends and saying stuff like "Look at Indiana, they will NEVER be good at football, they will never have a chance to win it all" and now, look.

It seemed crazy but it happened and like you said, more crazy stuff will happen.

Now that I think about it. Either Joel Klatt or one of his guests on his podcast said as much a couple of years ago. As far as I'm concerned, I think college football works better when the good teams have good records. Seems crazy for those two leagues to cut the weaker teams out of their conference and just beat up on each other. Teams could have good seasons and finish .500. I also think that it would be stupid to have a Power 2 format and still have a 16 team playoff. But I have no doubt that whatever pads everyone's bank account the most is what will be done.
