The JMI narrative collapsed. Expensive rosters for basketball. Stein pulling in talent through both the portal and HS. That narrative was shallow from the get-go but reported with such passion here by many who swallowed the vague claim and ran with it incessantly as if it was proven gospel. Weird.

Not really. It was resurrected yesterday afternoon by JMI 22 when he responded to a three month old post.
I agree with everything you said. Everything is true you typed. Stoops last 2 portal classes were 6th and 13th and he was a dead man walking. SEC money is gonna get transfers.
It just isn’t Fair to say Stein is recruiting heads and tails above Pope. That’s just not true. Football swims in different waters.
Last year Pope was #5 HS class. #5 Portal.
This year he kept 5 players and went transfer heavy with the #2 portal class. Only really went after Stokes in highly ranked HS.
Stein even with 7 four stars is sitting at 9th in the SEC. We will drop to below 10th place almost certainly.
I understand Kentucky is a BB school. But, to say Stein is killing recruiting and Pope is awful just isn’t true no matter what the Pope haters wanna believe. No single statistic says that.
If Pope ended up 10-11 place in the SEC and #20 plus Nationally. Can you imagine??? People are ecstatic with that in Football here.

You said recruits “basically have to sign away their NIL rights to JMI for an upfront sum.” That’s false. No Kentucky athlete is required to sign away their NIL rights to JMI. They remain free to pursue independent NIL deals.
Then you claimed players “can’t do anything with anyone not associated with JMI without JMI approval.” That’s another lie. JMI nor UK can prohibit legitimate third-party NIL deals. Have someone team the Kentucky state NIL law to you. UK athletes are not owned by JMI, so not even have use JMI, and can absolutely sign independent third party deals.
Your BS about the UK logo is just embarrassing. Athletes can’t freely use the university’s trademarks without permission because the university owns them, it’s their Name Image and Likeness, their Intellectual property that they are required to protect. It’s standard trademark law that dear leader knew when he brainwashed you mindless sheep. Every college and every professional sports franchise protects its logos, trademarks, and intellectual property. That’s standard practice, not some sinister Kentucky- JMI only restriction.

Again bball is way different. A 2 man class with both being 5* is a top 10 class. In football, if you want a top 10 class, you better have 1-2 5* and about 12-16 4*. It takes way more effort to get the talent. What Stein is doing is amazing and will only get better if he wins.
I want Pope to win and win big because it is good for the school, but his recruiting at the HS level has been borderline pathetic. He HAD to use the portal last class because he missed on everyone in the hs class. You can't gloss that over as "he went transfer heavy". There was a very real reason for that.
It’s competition for 15 players against every D1 basketball Schools, against 150 per team in football. Ou Basketball program is considered by most to be one of the greatest programs in the history of the game. Compare that with our history in football and trying to fill 150 players on the roster. With that said, Will is doing things here already at an historic level for our Football program. (On the recruiting front)! That’s why we’re excited about it.
With our history, it’s amazing how many big time players were in on. The two sports aren’t even in the same universe when it comes to how many players are playing the game every year. Pope doesn’t have to recruit like Cal and I’m actually glad we won’t need to depend on ONLY freshman!, but he does need to recruit better as the head coach of Kentucky with the history of the basketball program and the money available. Saying that, I’m very happy with our Basketball roster this season but the high school recruiting needs to improve and hopefully they’re figuring it out. It doesn’t have to be one or the other!

Hampton was absolutely a 5 star when he signed. Again, I said they dropped after signing, Hell, Stokes would have dropped if we signed him. Thats a half joke, but would be par for the course
Well since JMI was never the problem we can finally agree it was 100% Pope being unqualified for the position and not having a clue what to do.
Hampton is a five star on 247, as if signing a five star makes a difference.

The difference in the ability of attracting 5 star kids in basketball vs football has more to do with history than money. We have always been in the mix with 5 star kids through the years because of blue blood stature in basketball. Now thats changing of course but that explains why we're a lot more likely to attract them in the first place vs football, plain and simple.
Its all about perspective. You answered your own question saying Stein may have OUR best class ever. Football recruting at UK has alwasy been a tougher task than basketball simply due to history and stature. But Pope is doing good IMO simply because the historyical edge is changing in basketball today and he doesnt get the benefit of attacting kids just because were UK like it did in the past. So I give both props. But there is no question in perspective Stein is doing about as good as anyone could have imagined, maybe thats a better way to say it instead of comparing him to Pope which is a senseless comparison.
We actually have done better than the hole Cal put us in late in his stay at UK. Hopefully we continue to climb out this year.
The comparison should be HS recruiting. Which at this stage with Pope you have to say has been a failure. He has signed Moreno(local), Jasper(local), Hawthorne(top 100), little Hawthorne(unranked), and Williams(a coaches son). He missed on every major HS target in the 2026 class, and he was recruiting a bunch of them. That is where the portal narrative comes in, as if it was his plan all along to be portal heavy, when in reality he was bailed out by the portal. Without UK's brand recognition and booster support, the portal classes also don't happen. Hopefully the Hampton commitment starts the ball rolling in the right direction and Pope builds upon that success. He has to be able to recruit elite HS talent outside of the state of Kentucky for this program to sustain as a powerhouse.
Stoops 2nd class I believe was his best as well. He had 7-8 four stars too. Headlined by Drew Barker.
He did go after Stokes hard and missed. Honestly, I don’t believe Pope wants to follow in Caliparis footprint. He’s not going to take a HS guy just because he’s ranked 5*. You end up with Brandon Boston or TyTy Washington. He either wants a difference maker or a cheep development guy like Mason Williams , Braydon Hawthorne from the HS ranks. I’m on board for that thinking as well. That thinking is NOT going to go over well with the gotta get high ranked guys crowd tho.

The thing is I'm not Pope hater. I don't think the actual results have been terrible if you take out the blowout losses. But you can't take them out. You can't change perception other than winning big.
I'm simply a die hard passionate UK fan and the lack of control and the way he has represented UK has been kind of EMBERRASING imo. Not the actual record...the way he speaks. The way he's recruited. The perception of wins and losses even tho it's been pretty normal compared to other programs.
I think he came to UK at the wrong time. Times when Indiana football can go undefeated and win a national championship because of NIL. Times where most teams are evened out... We are used to the Kentucky way of the old era.
I wish the best for Pope. I hope he wins a national championship. It's just the way he talks and acts that I can't get down with unless he's winning big. And so far he isn't.
I don't expect elite 8s and final fours every year but it shouldn't be out of reach for that to be the expectation.what I do expect is for him to have some balls and if starters are are getting blown out by 35 with no effort and he's getting booed by his own fanbase then show some fckn emotion and at least put the walk ons in. Hell my highschool coach did that. At least do something.. anything. Get some control of your program. That's my biggest issue with Pope because the results have been pretty normal if we're being honest.
