It's kind of interesting to me. Stein is doing a nice job and is hailed as a recruiting wiz, BUT...HS football averages about 32 5 Star players every year. Stein has signed zero 5 Star recruits. Basketball averages 28 5 Star HS recruits per year, Pope got Moreno and Johnson last season and Hampton for next years class....and Pope comes off like the worst recruiter ever...besides the fact that he has brought in kids like Momcilovic and Oweh in the portal. In all fairness, I don't think Pope ever blamed recruiting failures on JMI. Someone please correct me if I'm mistaken. Also, football recruiting is totally different than football. Most of football is paid from the $22M settlement with only a few getting additional NIL dollars. In basketball that's not the case. Like many of you I'm not sure Pope will be successful or not. What concerns me is the next coach might have similar constraints as there are a number of schools that can out spend us. Additionally, despite all the good news about football the last I read we were still only ninth in the SEC. Temper your expectations and avoid anger and disappointment if things don't go well this first year for Stein. The schedule is brutal.
Neither Johnson or Moreno were five stars last year. And now Hampton has also fallen out of five star ranking as well. Just to be factual.
Yâall really believe Will Stein is recruiting at a high level using the same revenue-sharing model every other school has without meaningful NIL support? Football is the biggest revenue sport in college athletics, NIL is absolutely a major factor in recruiting.

Yes Hampton was top 5, but it is concerning he had the largest drop of any player in the top 25. I am still happy we signed him. Moreno was probably good enough for a high five star, but JJ was still over rated. The fact remains none of them are five stars when they finished the class or at the moment. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that fact.

Our Football class is ranked outside the top 20. Our basketball portal class in some is ranked the best portal and most definitely in the top 20 nationwide including freshman and returners.

24:7 JJ-24 MM-27 both high 4 stars
On3- JJ- 36 MM-24 both high 4 stars
ESPN- JJ-18 MM-26 both high four stars. So every major outlet ranked them just outside the top players in the class. Nothing wrong with it and both ranking were pretty spot on except MM should be the higher one.
I expect Hampton to push for five stars status regardless in the next class as it isnât close to as deep and Spears just reclassified. Thatâs a great commitment even if he finished 4 star as well.

When I used "cheaper", I didn't mean $$$. I meant that b/c there are far fewer players in hoops in the P4 schools while the total 5* in both sports are similar that the percentage of players that are 5* in hoops is way higher; i.e., easier to achieve; i.e., cheaper.

There are many more variables that go into a football recruitâs ranking because there are so many of them. It is impossible for the scouts to watch all of them and accurately determine their ranking. Looking at the offer sheets is a better way to tell what kind of class you have. Every single player in our class has other P4 offers.

You do realize that Stein had a top 10 portal class last year in football with him and his staff still working other jobs? They also have a top 25 HS class right now having never coached a game here. Presently 9th in the sec and still in on a handful of 4* for this class.
You are also comparing Pope and a historic national power house program recruiting to a perirenal SEC doormat. Pope's 1st class was 2 local guys, a late flip due to a coaching change, and Jelly. 2nd HS class was basically a coaches son. He has 1 commit in the 2027 class, hopefully his HS recruiting picks up. Right now his recruiting is just getting mercenaries out of the portal and then under performing with them. What Stein is doing is 100x more impressive than anything Pope has done to date.
