How will we know when to change the batteries in our smoke alarms?

Before DST and standardized time zones, Americans lived at a much more localized pace where days were strictly governed by sunrise and sunset rather than a universally ticking clock.

I guess you guys want to go back to working sunrise to sunset

It is, but my point was if China can make it work to make their entire massive country on one time zone (despite one side's sunrise being 10am), we can fit a entire states under one time zone.
Assuming east coast time would become the official time, if one left for work at 7 am, people in Hawaii would be leaving for work at effectively 1 am, in terms of daylight. That would be incompatible with sleeping, I would think, unless their business hours in Hawaii would start at 1 pm, and people would work until 9pm or 10pm.

I hadn't thought of this. I just added it to my furnace filter changes reminder.

And before someone comes after me-it's a geo unit with a huge 5" filter that I have to order because no one carries them in store.
If you replace the batteries on the clock change you no longer have a 6 month split.

Good point. TBH, I don't change then regularly. The units are wired in with a battery backup. When the battery dies, they beep incessantly until you replace them.

Modern smoke alarms are much more proactive in reminding you to replace the batteries.

But unfortunately they are all programmed to start to remind you at about 2:00 in the morning.

Also this seems like an appropriate time to confess that I don't change the analog clock in the kitchen Nov-March. While annoying for 4 months a year, the sense of victory I feel in March for winning the battle of the clocks makes it all worthwhile.

I never change my car clock.
It really messes with my kids. It's hilarious.

I'm not sure the temperature of the air/road surface and weather patterns are going to flex hours are nimbly as the retirement age people that are always behind this idea hope.
I don't think 1 hour is going to make a difference on air/road surface and weather patterns. Winter sucks, and it is generally cold and dark in the midwest.
