Thought i saw somewhere that he only weighs around 160 and has never cut weight.
He's still young for his grade so he may still be growing but his current walking around weight makes 157 not really much of a cut.

Haines had a small cut to 174 but was still competitive at 157 despite a massive cut. Duke's cut to 157 was much worse that what James would currently face. Heck, listen to Nolf talk about a post-holiday cut while at 157.

James would be fine at 157 for a year.

He was weighing over 170 just a month ago/after WTT.
His (Messenbrink) walking around weight is low 170s. His cut to 165 is pretty much be nothing burger.
James' walking around weight is low 160s and his cut to 157 will be pretty much be a nothing burger.

James is not a low 160s. Unless something changed and he's made a decision to go 157.

Like I said, his coaches saw him the week after WTT over 170 (after practice).

This doesn’t really add up. He weighed 158 on the final weigh in of the state tournament when he could’ve weighed 167 at the end of March. He was over a kilo under 2nd day of Senior WTT and 2 weeks after that he wrestled U20s.

Kid has a big family and is getting bigger. not really that surprising. James will be at 165 or 174, depends on what MM does. PJ 157.

I get that his Dad and brother are bigger but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything, look at Fredo compared to his Dad and older brother. You’re the only person I’ve seen saying he weighed over 170 after practice a week after WTT. His actual confirmed weight at the end of March and the end of May would suggest otherwise.

I get it I’m not mad at you but did it come from the same guy who told you Feldman was transferring to PSU? Because maybe don’t take that guys word as gospel and I’m not even trying to be facetious.
Naw. didn't come from that guy. Came from someone who actually saw him on the scale.

James is your 165 or 174. Book it!

I figure he will be a bigger kid, but I will be shocked if he isn't the 57 pounder this year.

Of course I am wrong a bit more than I like to admit, and I could be wrong here
PSU the fort knox of information. So I could be wrong as well. But I've heard it from a couple of people i trust.

Hmmm who do you think will have an easier time making 157?

My uninformed order:

James
Kasak
Duke

There you have it.

If the speculation that Kasak trys to go 149 and challenge SVN are true, I am a firm believer in deep cuts result in a very different wrestler on the matt. I find it pretty hard to believe Kasak will be successful. He uncharacteristically gassed against Blaze at 157 if you will recall.

PS - since I put it in writing that means Duke is almost assured to be the guy at 157 :)

Ono is competing this weekend in Japan. From what Gemini tells me, he is entered at 61kg in the Shakaijin Championships (the national corporate/non-student tournament). This is his path to qualify for the Emperor's Cup in December since he missed the last one with a kidney injury.

The tournament will stream live and for free on the official Japan Wrestling Federation YouTube Channel.
It looks right now that all his matches will be on the Mat A Stream.

US Viewing Times (EDT):
Start Time: Friday, July 10, 2026, at 9:00 PM EDT
(Matches begin Saturday at 10:00 AM local time in Japan).

Bout Order, Brackets & Mat Assignments:
You can monitor the official (untranslated) brackets and schedules directly via the (Google Translated) Japan Wrestling Federation Tournament Bracket Page. Keep an eye out for "61kg" (61kg級) or his name (小野正之助) to find the right mat stream.

*Edit*
  1. Gemini and I worked together on an English Translation of Ono's bracket (google doc below).
  2. I found the bout order too, and added it at the end of the doc.
  3. All the 61kg matches look to be on Mat A.
