Does anyone go to the movies anymore?

I'm retired and love to go to the movies. The key is to eat before you get there!

I usually go to a morning movie and pay $13. Cheap for that kind of entertainment.

I went to the movies once or twice a week pre-covid and pre-woke era.

The last movies I went to see with an exception were the Avenger Infinity Wars. Prior to that I couldn’t tell you.

Now all Hollywood is about is putting ‘Vote Democrat’ undertones in movies.

Supergirl is projected to lose a whopping $100 million. The only thing surprising is how unsurprising it is.

I don't know they insist on making movies that nobody is asking for and that are doomed to box office failures.

"What does NOBODY want to see? An all-female Ghostbusters. Ok, let's spend $150 million making THAT."

I'm ready for Hollywood to start making movies for adults again.

I'm also turned off to movies in general b/c so many actors have decided to be highly vocal politically. They've always been a heavily democrat (at least in my lifetime....Hollywood used to be Republican if you can believe it) but they've become maniacally so.

I get a kick out of these B-list actors who haven't had a big movie in 20 years coming out and saying things like "if you're pro-life, don't see my movies." I usually think "Easy. I didn't even know you were still acting."

There are more Republicans in Hollywood than you realize. I know that for a fact from personal experience. I never let politics keep me from enjoying being entertained.

When I was growing up people were quiet in theaters and I could watch and enjoy the movie. Now they aren't and I can't.
That, the cost of tickets, the very bright projector lights, and far too loud sound are added incentives to keep us away from theaters. The last movie we went to was probably 20 years ago to see a remake of the "Goodbye Girl," and it was due to tickets we won in a drawing or some such.

Other than theatres on Parris Island and MCAS Beaufort, I believe there are no more movie theatres in the Beaufort area other than the North 21 Drive-In, which I believe is only 1 of 3 drive-in theatres still in operation in South Carolina.

Over the last 30 years I have morphed from sometimes going to two movies in a day to NEVER going to movie theaters anymore. The most recent films I saw were Tom Cruise's "Top Gun: Maverick" and "Ford v Ferrari." There are several reasons for me no longer going to theaters:

~ the complete absence or non-awareness of movie-going etiquette (to include the advent of the cellphone)
~ the amazing OLED TVs available to us and being able to watch when we want
~ great streaming sites with tremendous inventories of very good TV series and films
~ that certain audience demographic that feels the need to "talk back to the screen" throughout the movie -- God forbid if it's a horror film

When I begin to read a movie critic's piece in the newspaper (E-edition, of course) the FIRST THING I DO is search for where the movie is playing -- if it's not on a streaming site I immediately stop reading...not interested -- I am perfectly happy to wait until it hits Netflix, Amazon Prime, AppleTV, Paramount+, et al. And, that microwave popcorn has gotten better and better over the years!
Rocky Horror Picture Show is an exception to the no talking back to the screen unwritten rule.

It would be just as problematic if they put ‘Vote Republican’ undertones in movies.

I don't watch with my antennas up anticipating political overtones. I don't go into a local business wondering if they supported a certain political party. There's a local art gallery business in town that often puts down, on it's signs, one of the 2 political parties. Just sell me a damn good product at a reasonable price and I will go away happy. I subscribe to a certain financial newsletter. I won't give his full name. But Don says the country is doomed in the very near term. He expects the U.S. to split into several nations. I laughed when he first said that back this past January. He said it again in his monthly newsletter a few days ago. But as time passes, I'm not so sure he is wrong. People want to focus on differences rather than what they have in common. My wife when we dated was of a different political persuasion than me. We got married 50 years ago. We are still married to each other and still of different political persuasions, though we do at times vote alike. But, maybe I'm just odd . But, I'm afraid that Don is on to something. And I find that sad. You know, cancer, heart disease, parkinsons, dementia, etc don't ask which political party you are affiliated with, what race, sex, religion you are. When you go meet your maker, how much money you have will not give you an advantage. But again, maybe my attitude makes me odd. I don't know.

I remember Saturday matinees where we could get in for six RC cola bottle caps or something. Triple headers. I think the drive in is still operating here in Greenwood.

Yes, Greenwood, Beaufort, and Monetta. My suspicion is that Beaufort customers are mailnly military and a few tourists.

Yogi Berra had the famous line when he was asked if he went to the movies,”It’s so crowded nobody goes anymore.”

When I saw those 2 idiots climb to the very top of the Empire State Building to get engaged, I thought of the old Nora Ephron movie, Sleepless In Seattle. I thought, Hey that might be Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan :D

Todays movies don't impress me. But I do like to watch old movies on television. The late Ted Turner loved old movies. That's why he started Turner Classic Movies. The Nora Ephron movie I love is 1998's "You've Got Mail". I must admit that I "fell in love" with Meg Ryan in that movie. Whenever it's on TV, I take the time to watch it.

There is an alarmist radio personality who says something very similar. Not that the country will split, but that it will split into very different regions. Her idea was that the rule of law was breaking down, with politics driving which laws would be enforced. This would separate the country into areas where the laws are enforced differently.

That's interesting, my friend. Part of me would hate that. But part of me would say that should happen. I am going to quote part of Don's words here. He is not a political scientist. He is a long time financial analyst. His belief steers me and others of his membership to specific investments.

"In January, I said that 2026 would be the last year of American Greatness. The demise of America is coming. I still think 2026 is the end. The economic trend is ugly and not improving for the bottom 80%.

My research implies that the breakdown begins soon. The clock is ticking. It will begin with a stock market selloff, followed by layoffs, bankruptcies and anemic economic growth. America will reorganize and start over, not as one nation, but as a series of unaffiliated countries.

Sadly, there is no path forward for America as a nation of 50 states."

That's Don opinion. I commented to him in January that I thought it was crazy. But the political divisiveness I have seen since then has me coming around to his point of view. Again, he is not a political-type. I have no idea what political party he favors. He is a financial guy. His thesis is PART of his motivation steering me and others to a specific investment sector.

When you can, send me a message with any more things the radio personality is saying about this.

Crazy thought, we should split into 50 nations, then form a sort of an organization that would control the international trade between them. :)

I have a friend who, when a game is a night game, will go to the tailgate around 11:00, tailgate with friends until around 5:30 or 6:00 and then drive to his lake house and watch the game on tv. He sets the DVR to record the game, so even if he gets to the lake house after kickoff, he can watch from the very beginning.

I think he might have the best plan I've heard of.

About a month ago, I had to pick up my wife at the Bozeman airport around midnight. I decided to go to a movie to kill some time between my other activities in Bozeman and her flight arrival, so I ended up seeing Backrooms at the Regal Cinema purely because of the start time. For a single ticket on a Monday night and a medium drink/popcorn combo, I paid over $35! That does not make me want to go back to the Regal Cinema any time soon.

Bozeman is widely known for its exorbitant entertainment prices. Try Missoula next time -- it is known for reasonable popcorn pricing.

Perhaps, but I'll spend more trying to fly into or out of Missoula, vs Bozeman, than I will save on the popcorn prices. Lol. Not to mention its over 3 hours away.

You're a stronger man than me if you can resist the smell of movie theater popcorn!

Besides, it's all about entertainment. If I have to sit there miserable while resisting my popcorn cravings, what's the point? It's just easier to watch the movie on TV at home. The Cinemark theater in Helena, however, does have a pretty good deal. BYOB - bring your own bucket. Pay for a large popcorn and they'll fill up whatever bucket you bring from home. Last time we went, somebody literally brought in a Lowe's 5-gallon bucket - and they filled it.

The New England states threatened to seceed in the 1820s. And we know what happened 40 years later.

If the country were to split, IMO several states would go it alone, and many would group with neighbouring states to form their own countries. Or the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan would leave Canadian Condeferation and would join up with Idaho and Montana to form a country, leaving British Columbia to join up with Washington and Oregon.

But you would need a common military, since Muslim terrorists would take advantage of the breakup.

I've heard the drive-in theaters make their money off of concessions since the cost of acquiring movies is very high.

I can't fathom anything coming out of Hollywood these days that would justify me spending $35.00 to see.
