Out of an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 Haitian immigrants in the Springfield area, official data highlights specific public assistance usage:
  • Medicaid: Recent records from Clark County Job and Family Services showed 3,676 people who selected a Haitian language as their preferred language applied for Medicaid.
  • Cash Assistance/SNAP: County and state data previously recorded around 4,324 Haitian individuals receiving Refugee Cash Assistance, TANF, or SNAP.
Many Haitian immigrants were invited to the city to fill local labor shortages, but because many were hired through temporary staffing agencies, employer-provided healthcare is frequently not available, driving the need for Medicaid enrollment. Conversely, community organizers also reported that a growing number of Haitian immigrants utilized local food and utility assistance following job losses.

It needs to be acknowledged that the benefits outweigh the cost because these aren't freeloaders who came to mooch off the government, they are staffing important warehouse and factory jobs.

some are filling jobs, and some are taking advantage of federal benefits.

All of that aside, the issue is whether or not the President has the authority to cancel TPS...What the administration does with that authority is yet to be seen.

dpic with all due respect...you're talking about the 15,000 living in Ohio. From what I understand, there are upwards of 350,000 Haitians in the US on TPS. As I've posted before, there out to be some means to exercise common sense in how to deal with those that are here. We don't gain anything from deporting people who are here, working and contributing to the economy. And, we don't gain anything from supporting those in the country who are not

We have been specifically talking about the ones living in Springfield who were recuited there by a Republican governor. I'll take your word on the rest but again, there is nothing to return them to except a devastated country run by warlords, so many of them will die. That may not bother you but I'd ask that you put yourself in their shoes for a moment before you send them back to a hopeless situation.

reread my posts on the topic. I've advocated for common sense on this topic. After 15 years of living in the US, building a family, a career or job growth, a future, these are people (some not all) who deserve the opportunity to stay. There's no reason why they can't be granted residency.

Others who are here strictly, or principally, to take, we don't need them

MARKWAYNE MULLIN: Those that are coming to this country legally, they need to be able to contribute to the US, not be a burden on the taxpayers

TAPPER: But do you maintain that it's safe in Haiti to send these people back? The State Dept has a level 4 do not travel advisory

MULLIN: Well, the do not travel is not for Haitians. That's do not travel for the United States.
