I feel like using press situationally is fine, but I feel like most presses I see get broken pretty easily. Gone are the days of the likes of Press Virginia.

A very smart coach I knew that worked with Pitino said it’s takes not athletic players but players with quickness and anticipation skills. The NCAA disallowed the hand checking and teams became defensive lazy. If the players can’t by into defense as a team nothing works.youhave team stats on defense but it usually one player that controls thatstat

Situationally fine, but even Pitino went away from it
This is the best answer. Teams have more ball handlers and better spacing than the 1990s. Pressing is now used more as a change of pace or to slow the game down a little, rather than the aggressive style Pitino used back then. We might sprinkle a tiny bit of it in, but don’t expect to see it much.

Unfortunately the press is something college coaches have decided to bury and throw extra dirt on top. Unless they’re down 10 with 2 to play.

But it was fun while it lasted.
Agree there are several valid reasons as to why a full court press has gone the way of the underhand free throw, but it sure was fun to watch while it lasted. More specifically, it was that Pitino press that was as exciting to watch as the offense. What a great era in UK basketball

Pitino was already starting to rely less on pressing even before he left.

It is a situational tool these decades later. Ask Pitino.

During Cal's time we would generally feast on any such efforts and I doubt he even intalled press breakers.
The typical distribution of skills on the floor is just not the same as the early 90's.

If you fool around against the wrong teams then mostly you end up slowing down the game while creating open shots for them.

I think you can only effectively press bad teams now. Most players are so skilled that even attempting to press is probably going to put you in a disadvantage
Few teams are that specific flavor of bad anymore either though.

It more seems like to me bad teams today tend to have no effective size and/or athleticism but still find okay guards and try to get by with them and maybe a wing type they have jeweled up a little and probably have to play them out of position.

I was privileged to sit by coach John Wooden at a banquet . I had read his book and the Jr high teams I coached played his 1/1/2/1 zone press falling back into a man to man.all other teams in our league played a 2/3 zone . No press .

I asked the wizard what the best defense was thinking he would answer man to man to confirm how much smarter I was than the other coaches . He surprised me by answering “the one your team plays best” . He pointed to Syracuse and their zone, to the 1/3/ 1 zone UK played for a few years .
“ There is no perfect defense. Depends on your talent and if they play it to perfection “ he said .

People say a full court press won't work anymore, but when a desperate team does it the last 2 minutes of a game, it leads to a lot of turnovers.
I think teams can be caught off guard with it, but if it was used throughout games then it'd be adjusted to pretty easily. Might be able to use it early for a short period for the same reason, to catch opponents off guard.

There are reasons it's not done any more.

Better big man ball handlers is one of the main ones.

I always thought early on Pitino used the press to speed up the game. More possessions, we’ll hit more threes than you. Get careless and we’ll get a layup. Passing to break that press was a mistake against UK back then. Sean Miller and Damon Bailey proved that.

I think as other teams became more willing to value the three and more importantly fire up open threes in transition was the biggest factor in moving away from pressing as much.

It was the 1-2-1-1 press and Pitino went away from it after his second season at UK. He used a 2-2-1-1 to speed up the game when he got more talented players who could execute in the half court but it was used more for tempo than his first two years at UK and at Providence when he had less talented teams and had to gamble more.

It was the sixth man that really made it hard to score against it. 😂

A 14 - 15 player team is definitely deep enough to play an up tempo full court defense game.
With these kids making millions you can’t run them into the ground or be hard on them. They will decide to go somewhere easy. We have already seen kids pack it in for the draft mid season. Coaches can’t press because coaches can’t condition kids hard anymore. Once you get to the NBA. It’s performance or your out. In college you are paying for his name. lol.
