Because he took a program they had been toothless for 6 or 7 years and has us in a NY day bowl in two seasons to absolutely demolish Michigan (with a qb that cannot make a dependable forward pass) and number one in the nation a few years later with a qb that everyone else wanted to play TE. He also basically found Chris Jones who had obviously never been evaluated by anyone. And had set us up for another great season in 2018 had a competent coach been hired.

This next hire cannot be a gamble. Another miss or bad fit and we are finished. With the times they way they are now, that's all there is to it. Especially if the there is some kind of major collegiate football restructuring. And the people that would be making the hire are the same people who hired Lebby this time along with making the fan base as apathetic, if not more, than Croom's last year. Remember, Cignetti was on the market and I don't know if we even sent him an email. The department went with Lebby.

F this one up, and it's lights out on being competitive. So you wanna gamble? Or you want to go with what has worked and what is working in Vegas?

Sometimes, reading this site, I wish we could stick them in for a year and see how successful they are. But yeah, tbh, I could probly coach them to a 2 win season.

This is pretty much what I predicted when all this NIL and transfer stuff was just about to start and some were saying it would be good for us.

Specifically with OM I said we'd be at a big disadvantage, in part because they already had the infrastructure, know-how and willingness to take immediate advantage because they'd already been doing it on a large scale for decades, and now wouldn't have to hide it or pretend they weren't doing it. And they could do it on a larger scale because their risk/reward ratio would go bonkers given the risk had been mostly eliminated.

I'm sure there's a thread about this already but I didn't search for it. In the top 4 - Tupelo, Ackerman and Louisville and we didn't get one of them. That's embarrassing.

It’s just really difficult to imagine a world where we can compete with the top 4-6 teams in the SEC, even if those 6 teams change a bit.

He has the highest average wins per season # of any coach in school history. If he had stayed for one more year, he would have passed Sherrill as the winnigest in school history. He turned our football program into precisely what we have been chasing and trying to replicate for the past 8 years.

Yeah, that's pretty dumb. My only question would be does he have the energy to do what it takes to compete in the current environment? It's a lot easier to win 10 games in the a hollowed out G6 than a 9 game per season/16 team SEC.

I think Lebby prioritized retention of existing players (which other than fumbling Jayven James, we did pretty well this past off season) and signing young transfer portal kids over HS recruiting. Ole Miss has figured out how to do both, mainly by spending embracing NIL much earlier than almost anyone else and fielding much better teams. Their early success has made it easier to continue to raise more money.

Selmon understands that we have to raise money to compete in the current landscape, but he made critical errors in hiring a first-time head coach and then allowed that head coach to hire unqualified assistants.

The best way to improve recruiting is to win big this year and to field an exciting football team. Five and seven isn't going to cut it. Six and six isn't really going to move the needle that much. Win 7-8 games and hang 30-40 pts a game on folks. No outside of Starkville thinks that will happen, however.

So, the second option is fire Lebby when things fall apart again and hire someone who doesn't need training wheels. Maybe that's Mullen. Who knows if he'll be interested or if that's even a good decision.

One thing is for sure, limping along with Lebby for another year without significant improvement in wins and losses will be another wasted year at a critical time in this era of college football.

People thinking oh what we're seeing is cyclical and now that Kiffin is gone they're going to revert back to what we wish they were are living in a 17ing fantasy land. Open your eyes, what we're seeing is a fundamental change in the dynamic in the state of Mississippi. And it's very bad for us unless we wake up quickly.

These aren't just good recruits, they are recruits in our freaking backyard. OM boosters wouldn't allow that but our Virginia slims just say "oh well, at least we have baseball".

I think fans are really naive regarding football players. I work with a guy that played at Memphis under Fuentes. He said the first time he saw cocaine and steroids was when he joined the team. The drugs was away from campus and the practice field.

They also had kiffens offensive staff. No big drop with the players but not maintaining where they are is reasonable.

...and a hell of a recruiter. The talent he brought in here was unlike anything we've ever seen.

The outrage over him leaving is rooted more in emotion than reason. At some point, people need to let it go.

And no one is arguing that he's the next Nick Saban. They're pointing out that he was the most successful coach this program has had in over half a century (at least).

Here's the thing. If we had a Greg Byrne making a hire I'd be all in on letting sleeping dogs lay. But we don't. This next hire needs to be a Mullen or Leach type head guy. Not another one of the three latest disasters. A fourth disaster and the program is cooked for a long time.
