I haven’t read enough about this, but are we 100% sure that Olympic redshirts will not be a thing in 2028?

Here are the meeting notes from the D1 Cabinet meeting on June 5. Assuming this is what was approved yesterday, then there will be no Olympic redshirts in 2028.

So when they say "old rules" it isn't really the complete old rules. It is a modified version of the old rules.

Omg they made the date SEPT 1. They didn't follow the academic year of August 1.

Still following the academic year of August 1.

Gave a reprieve for late year-birthers. As typically, students born after sept 1, can't enroll in kindergarten at 5.

So bassett is still fine because he's enrolling in the fall following his 19th birthday.

"Age-based trigger: The start of the regular academic year immediately following the student-athlete’s 19th birthday, if the student-athlete turns 19 years old before Sept. 1."

Maybe we're interpreting this differently, but I've seen Kozak on twitter State it would give basset 4 years and to me it sure seems like 4 years.

* Why does this have to be so confusing lol

Oh I see what you're getting at. Hmm. Time will tell.

You know what, he might be right...

Bassett turned 19 on Aug 25, 2025. Yikes.

Like you said earlier - September 1 wasn't in the books yesterday. It was just the academic year.

What is not clear is the definition they are using for "the start of the academic year".

In the current rule set there are at least two definitions.

In Bylaw 13.1.7.5 Evaluations - Men's Basketball
In men's basketball, each institution shall be limited to seven recruiting opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined) during the academic year (September 1 through April 30)

In Bylaw14.4.3.1 Fulfillment of Credit Hour Requirements:
For purposes of Bylaw 14.4.3.1, the regular academic year shall be defined as the time beginning with the opening of the institution's fall term and concluding with the institution's spring commencement exercises.

The first is fixed and the second varies by institution. If they use the second then you have edge cases with regard to the new rule. If someone turns nineteen August 31, but the school they will attend started classes August 30, then the next academic year is 364 days away. But if the school they will attend begins classes September 1 then the next academic year is 1 day away.

It seems likely that they will harmonize the definition with this new rule and make it so that late August birthday's are penalized.

My thing is this not many universities start after Aug 25 so how could he have enrolled immediately in the academic year following his 19th birthday

Agreed. The September 1 date is completely arbitrary and nonsensical. They should have left it as is.

@dicemen99 we all know my reading comprehension sucks 🤷. How do you read this ? And would Bo get 4 or 5 according to your interpretation?
You get a pass on reading NCAA memos. The NCAA's lucidity sucks worse than your reading comprehension.

According to Basch, this is now moot for Bassett. If he's wrong, the compliance release looks like it intends for the September 1st to be the start of the academic calendar, but the wording still is open to various interpretations if you try hard enough (and some lawyers always will).

I got a pass 😎

The academic year started Aug 1 in the past not sure if they've changed that to Sept 1 now or not.
I just don't understand how someone who's 19 Aug 25-Sept 1 is supposed to enroll in the next academic year when most universities start before Aug 25 so to me the next academic year would be the following August.

I just assume they did it because there is no consistency in when schools start their academic years, but a majority if not all start by September 1st so just use that date.

This is what I meant by the NCAA language being open to various interpretations. They need to do a better job (always) of making their intent clearer.

But it seems that they just want to make the date 9/1. The date and the age are just markers. The kids are free to enroll at any time.

Because they're idiots. They literally can't help themselves.

If you had just left the language at "academic year starts on Aug 1" - everyone would have been with it, it would have made sense and there is not grey areas or an entire month where athletes are somehow penalized.

We can all agree that most schools start the fall session in the month of August. NO schools start the fall session in July.

Jeeeeezus with these guys.

How will all of this affect someone like Zack Ryder? I believe he was planning on surgery and taking medical redshirt next year. Will that still be allowed if documents are turned in by July or does he now have only 3 year left no matter healthy or injured?

Can use old rules and must apply for waiver by July 31.

His documentation would basically need to show that he cannot compete at any time during the next season.

Melvin Miller: The top-ranked American high school wrestling phenom from Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, was born in October 2006. He is 19 years old. [1, 2]. Per Google

if correct, he will be 20 in October. Will he lose a year unless he goes to VT this season?

This can't be correct, otherwise he would not be eligible to compete at PIAAs this year.

I love all the tweets and posts about the impact on guys that have never won an ncaa match. Oh - can he be a 5xer or only a 4xer? As if it’s that easy. Good Lord, could you imagine HR if this was the summer before Lord Spencer’s freshman year? Or even Warnerov’s?

Ryder already used a redshirt. Whether old rules or new rules he would have to solicit the NCAA for an extra year. I would think based on the working model in place when he enrolled he would be granted a 6th year. Otherwise it will go to court where the NCAA is guaranteed to lose.

If he is 20 in October he isn't allowed to compete in PIAA sanctioned events this year. Might as well enroll now.

I’m just relieved Bo Bassett gets 5 years. One less year of breathless reportage on the squinty-eyed one would have been patently tragic
You’re on quite the roll. Yesterday’s quip about putting Bob out on the street as well. Well done.

Plenty of schools start after August 25. At least here in Michigan. My kids are 2 different D1 schools and both are after 8/25 this year (I only looked at the 2, so totally anecdotal, maybe every other school is before 8/25).
