IMO, a championship team has the following qualities:
  • Excellent Talent - which stays healthy all season
  • Excellent team chemistry
  • Excellent management which knows when to push the right buttons

Your 2nd point was the big key in this run.

Before anyone goes there, no this could never and will never happen in college football. Not in 10,000 lifetimes.

Baseball, more than any other sport, is really about getting hot at the right time. There have been many years in MLB where the team that was obviously the best team did not win the World Series because their opponent got hot at the right time.

I've never been happier for a team to win that wasn't us. That Tar Heel @$$ can't get beat bad enough or often enough to suit me.

Parenthetically, this mindset is particularly prevalent in those of us who came through the ACC era. I wish the younger generations could understand. We'll never have the same level of vitriol where we are now, and it's a genuine detraction as far as I'm concerned.

I was happy when Coastal won it, but not to this extent.

So, you remember when UNC fans would throw dead chickens on the basketball court and hurl insults at little Frankie? Some things are hard to forget . . . they actually define a fan base for years to come.

I loved the MUTUAL hatred, especially regarding Duke, UNC, N.C.State, Maryland, and of course UPC. It will never be duplicated.

It was a surprise to see that last kid was from Lancaster. Don't remember seeing his name in the past couple years in SC baseball. But globber was from FM by way of New Jersey.

I thought it was Clemron fans who did this. Frank Sr. could take the insults to himself, but to Jr. was crossing the line.

I wouldn’t put anything past Clemmy. However, my recollection was Tobacco Road hated McGuire and South Carolina to the extreme.

Psychotically - Weaver and Cameron would have put out a hit on McGuire if they knew they could get away with it.

Metaphorically; I'm talking literally. It killed them for McGuire to come back into the league and build a power that threatened the Big Four.
Yet there was no animosity against Maryland, who was competitive in hoops fior the first few years of the ACC's existence. Eddie Cameron and Frank McGuire were not friends.

McGuire was the lighning rod who galvanized the league.
