I've always considered CWS appearances to be the benchmark of programs, and that combines regular season success and postseason success, i.e. and takes out the luck. Using my formula, I give a weight of 3 to an CWS appearance if you won the title. I also took out pre-1954 because that was before we had a tournament, and results that old are just dumb, which put out teams like Minnesota, Colorado, and Oklahoma's first title. Here's the results, as of 2025, I find it to be a generally good list:

We're essentially a top 13 program, could say top 12 if you factor down Florida State with no titles. We have 5 SEC programs in front of us then a few others who are close to us. And tonight is a no-win situation as even though OU won't pass us, they'll still have 2-modern era titles. If UNC wins, they move above us. And how many times have they 17ed us over the years? 1989 and 2003 come to mind.

We really, REALLY need OC to be our Saban and reel off about 5 titles, if we want to continue to pump the baseball program on anything more than attendance records.

Its your formula- give teams 4 points if they win it on an odd year.
Personally, I say give the team 10 points if they win it all despite the opposing team in the finals that has two first round picks in its weekend rotation being given a free pass to the championship and a whole game that they didn’t even have to use one of the 2 starters right beforehand.

You know you’ve got a solid ranking system when every single fan base would rather be #2 or #5 than #1.
You have to factor in for the randomness of baseball. I don't think anyone would agree with Pepperdine, Fresno State or Coastal Carolina being on this list. Or even Georgia.

Now do the football rankings where Nebraska, Penn State, and Florida State are all Top 8-10 programs***

In all seriousness, the most logical way to do these rankings is to really not consider anything that happened before 1999, when the current postseason format was set. It’s been nearly 3 decades in this format now, with no coaches remaining from the old version or any players being born within 10 years of the old one existing.

Texas, LSU, and maybe Arizona are the only teams in that Top 10 that have any business at all being there….and even Arizona is a tad questionable.

USC hasn't been to the CWS in a quarter century, yes 25 years. When do you drop them out of the mix of being a relevant baseball school anymore? Wichita State hasn't been in 30 years. They're like the football National Championships of the University of Northern MS from the 70's
I did the 25 year thing too, it moved us down to 16.

There's not a perfect way to do these sort of things. Baseball is not football It also depends on what you're trying to portray. I was just looking a historical notoriety, not the power of a program now. I mean those banners don't disappear. Also not really fair to say Fresno State is a better historical program than Florida State.

I would think that sounds about right, honestly. But if you give more credit for national titles, we move up probably back into that 12-13 range. Somewhere in the 11-16 range is where we should be, objectively.

I would be interested in how it looked from the 1999-2026 seasons (28 years), under the following criteria:

Regional appearance - 1 point
Super Regional appearance - 2 points
CWS appearance - 4 points
CWS title - 4 points

Basically, the most points you can get in one season is 11, if you win it all. But 4 seasons where you reach the super regionals gives you 12 points, even if you lose in that round every time. That would trump the one miracle run season of another program, if that’s all they did. That’s how you cull out the Fresno State’s and Coastal Carolina anomolies and reward the consistently good programs. However, I think Coastal would still probably land in the Top 20 based on other success.

Perhaps weigh appearances in the last 25 years at 3x or 4x appearances longer than 25 years ago.

To be clear- I am not criticizing your ranking. I dont actually know who should be in the top 15.

Am I seeing this correctly that you get 1 point for just showing up and doing jello shots in Omaha (like Arkansas for example), zero additional points for winning any games or getting to the finals, and then you get 2 points for winning it all?

I appreciate the idea, but that seems like not nearly enough credit to the winners.

Would they really rather be USC though? Their last title was 1998? Texas has won two since then. Really haven't paid attention to how teams outside of the SEC have been in baseball, so I don't know how they have fared outside of national championships in the last 25 years.

But yes, there is not enough credit for multiple national championships. I think each successive national championship actually counts for more. But it looks like under valuing national championships happens by chance to be offset some by not crediting the recency of a team's success.

Need a factor to multiply each accomplishment by to account for recency. 1 for the last decade. Maybe .9 for the decade before that. Then maybe .5, .3, .1 for the decades before that. Then like .01 for anything before that. The banners don't disappear. But they definitely stop mattering.

Also, need another multiplier for repeating accomplishments that prove prior ones weren't a fluke. Get a multipler of 2 for a second CWS. Multiplier of 3 for a 3rd. But the biggest multiplier applies to the oldest accomplishment. So you get tons of credit for 3 national championships in a two decade period. Much less so if you have one from 40 years ago, 30 years ago, and a current one.

Should be easy enough for one of y'all to whip up in your spare time.**

Does any of this really matter?

I mean beyond making fan feel their team or program has some long lasting value, what's the actual efficacy going forward?

The moment is all that matters. I damn sure enjoy reliving the moments when State has been successful (thanks YouTube) - as few as they may be.

We will have more such moments while BOC is coaching this baseball team.

Football and basketball - probably not for a while.

Probably not. But I like to look at the future and have some hope.

And I think our fanbase deserves that shlt (along with the rest of the fanbase). I want to walk around be held in the same regard as LSU baseball, even if not the exact same. I want to be able to plan on hosting and having long stays in Hoover.

Way too long we've been looking up at all these other SEC programs who don't care nearly as much. And most of it all self-inflicted due to one stupid coaching hire in 2001.

At the end of the day - we are probably a top 5-10 program in terms of program success, fan support, and stadium.
In other words, we’re a Top 2 program in terms of fan support and stadium, and a Top 15 program in terms of success.

Not sure you can take out Minnesota since they were 3 for 3 in their appearances and all 3 fell within your 1954 - 2025 range. That would give them 9 points with a 100% success rate. Maybe they should be ranked above Texas and their 11% success rate. Interesting that only 31 teams have won the crown at the CWS since 1954 (total of 71 years) and your Top 25 only has 59 of those championships.

Exactly the most important year for every program is next year. How many baseball programs would you rather be a fan of in 2027? Id say we are top 10 if not top 5 in that regard.

Titles and CWS appearances are important but not the sole determining factor of historical significance.

I’d assign something for NCAA and Super Regional appearances, though obviously more for CWS and championships.

Having said that, UNC is and always has been a top tier baseball school, at least in the modern era. If they win tonight it’ll be akin to us finally breaking through in 2021.

^ This. Anything that happened in NCAA baseball prior to 2000 isn’t very relevant.

You can absolutely create an all-time baseball program ranking to include 1954 and onward but it’s irrelevant in today’s world.

I guess you could argue with NIL that anything prior to 2020 is irrelevant now so I dunno.

They weren’t 3 for 3. I know they lost to Southern Cal in the final. Dave Winfield had a shutout going into the 9th & ran out of gas. Bullpen gave up something like 9 runs.

Just somebody else in the conference and the SE to have to recruit against.

Granted, much better those teams than say, Auburn or Alabama. We don't ever want them to start pouring money into baseball.

Yes, and that sucks.

This is 'our' sport we say, we care and support it more than anyone else, yet we've won less than arguably 15 or so other programs, 5 of them being SEC.

Looks like we were both wrong. Minnesota has appeared in 5 CWS and won 3. They played USC in the final in 1960 and beat them 2-1. I don't think they gave up more than 1 run in any of their 3 championship games. Minnesota and USC only played each other once in the final.
