I haven’t said he committed any crimes. And I don’t necessarily think he did. But you are saying he fully deserves a pre-emptive pardon because he had death threats against him. Which has zero to do with anything. Crimes are discovered during investigations and prosecuted after those investigations.
A pre-emptive pardon absolves him from all of that doesn’t it? How on earth can you pardon someone without knowing what kind of crime he may or may not have committed?
He was being protected from a vindictive prosecution by the corrupt incoming administration that we all knew was on the table. This 80 year old man who had dedicated his life to science and the protection of our health did not deserve the public lashing that he would have likely received in courtrooms, so that was in addition to the indignity of being forced to hire private security for he and his family, not the sole reason. Anybody with an ounce of decency knew he wasn't responsible for the pandemic and Biden decided he wasn't going to let him be treated him like a villain in his few remaining golden years.

We can justify anything as important and if asked I using common sense would ask ethical people about studying gain of function in a safe scientific manner.
In my opinion using a US funded lab in Wuhan China is not a responsible choice.

The preemptive pardon was for the EXACT reason that everyone with even less than half a brain knows- Trump has a habit of punishing and going after people who are perceived threats, opponents, or who his base hates. That includes Fauci.

I meant Fauci- he was tapped in first by Trump and continued his stint helping the covid 19 pandemic and the State's response to it from Trump to Biden's term. Maga and its conspiracy theory underbelly turned on him quick, and we all know what Trump does to those he/his base perceives as political opponents- he uses every means he has to retaliate- which we all know. Yet you keep asking. The death threats were just a symptom or added proof of the reason, which was the rights obsession of blaming Fauci for Trump’s loss. That they became obsessed and have made claims he killed millions. And it’s been clear, especially now, that had Biden not done that, he would’ve been charged with something no matter how dumb, just as retribution just like Comey, etc.

I feel like your misunderstanding is a common misunderstanding for both the actual research itself, but, in particular, how research is funded.
I was not involved in any of the grant writing, so I obviously cannot speak to particulars about this exact topic. However, the ethics of any experiment are absolutely taken into consideration when determining the merit of federally funded research.
For example, if there were any need for mice in the experiment, the researchers are obligated to do a power calculation to determine exactly how many mice would need to be experimented on to get the required statistical significance to test the researchers’ hypothesis.
This type of ethical evaluation (to oversimplify it) is also necessary in any published research at respectable journals.
By the way, not trying to be pedantic about this, but since viruses need another living cell in order to “live”, all the experiments on a virus would have to be extremely detailed and controlled, as these systems are incredibly sensitive to everything (temperature, vibrations, pressure, etc.).
Gain of function and loss of function genetic variations are fundamental research topics. To oversimplify it, if a genetic variation *does not* have either a gain or loss of function, then it is essentially a meaningless variation. I say this because it means anyone doing genetic variation research would have to be focused on gain of function or loss of function, because otherwise we could argue it’s a waste of federally funded money.
Is your primary concern that the research being funded is in China and not the US? We definitely have federally funded research on this topic in the US as well. UNC was actually one of those labs studying an important aspect of Covid 19, and it appears that Chinese operatives tried to break in to the lab or access its data; during 2020/2021 (can’t remember exactly) the FBI actually visited with UNC staff about this situation/event.
