***CC22 and the Fever mega thread***

The Fever, despite their atrocious defense, had a decent shot at winning and Caitlin had a good shot at a 30 point double-double but both were thwarted by the refs. Eff these refs and the WNBA.
The reffing is really what is killing my interest most. I get the preceding posts that the men's game and women's game are just different, and I feel like I mostly have that in perspective. But when the rules are not evenly, consistently, and correctly applied, it makes it really hard to enjoy watching.

Roster construction.
3 starting caliber players, 1 quality bench player, and a junk drawer of other stuff. Plus a coach that has no idea how to use the players she was handed.

Clark isn’t being given an offense to run that she is efficient at, plus isn’t being given help on Defense. She also continues to push things that lead to unforced turnovers.

Boston is being pulled way too far away from the paint on offense, and has no backup. When she’s in foul trouble it is basically over.

Mitchell is a black hole on offense, sucks on defense, and is a bad pairing at SG next to CC. Her defenders will say she scores points though.

Lexi is a hustle player more than a defensive stopper. And she isn’t contributing enough for a starter with the contract they signed her to. Her 5.5 points per game is atrocious for a starter on an offensive team like this one.

Billings is probably the worst offseason signing in the league this year. Unplayable at the end of a game. Her 5.5 points per game is atrocious for a starter.

Sophie is earning her keep lately, wasn’t great to start the season but has been coming on and is effectively playing starter minutes.

Dantas is basically a joke out there.

MHA is a replacement-level player I guess. 4pts and 3rbs in 16 minutes per game isn’t great.

Harris is ok as a backup PG I guess.

Timpson is all effort and athleticism with little skill. Just about non-existent on offense.

Johnson was in over her head tonight but as a rookie has shown some flashes.
I agree with almost all of this. The thing that made me chuckle was CC not giving help on defense…because she rarely gives help on defense. Has anyone ever seen Caitlin step in and take a charge? I’m not sure I ever have.

Fever score 100 and lose! Why - no defense. You should never lose a game in this league if you score 100. It's obvious the Fever are a very poor man-to-man defensive team. Although she's too stubborn to do it, SW needs to start switching up defenses and play a lot of zone. At every opportunity teams are trying to iso CC and then take her to the rim. It worked big-time last night for the Dream.

Couple that with what we know about Caitlin's offensive capability, and there's your answer, for those wondering about her defensive effort (and how she let it get this way)...........

So last year the argument was they called not enough fouls. Now to many fouls? Look, they’re calling the game much tighter now. At some point CC also needs to adjust defensively and figure some things out. She stands way to straight up after she’s beaten almost immediately and then she leans in and fouls. I’d rather she give up a few layups to stay in the game. The refs aren’t out to get her. They’re just not.

I'm not talking about her defense, generally, and no, they are not calling enough fouls. Caitlin should be drawing 50+ fouls a game the way she is being guarded. My observation is that they are calling more freedom of movement fouls for players other than her. As far as last night in particular, a couple of those calls against her were BS, regardless of how crappy some would say she was otherwise playing defense.

I think you missed her biggest tantrum to date.
It was a totally justified tantrum.

Any player would or should go apoplectic at that call. When slowed down you can see Canada charges in and steps on Caitlin's foot which causes her to stumble backwards.

This league is so backwards. Normally the biggest stars get favorable whistles, Caitlin gets unfavorable whistles. Outrageous whistles. Just a generally fair whistle is all we want.

Caitlin DID have a very poor defensive game last night. That's why it's so particularly maddening that when she IS in great position she still gets penalized. She can't win it seems.

That said Caitlin really needs to dig in on defense cuz teams are only going to try and take more advantage of her and the refs.

The officiating crew was horses--t. I mean, 53 personals called. Disrupted the flow of the game after what I felt was a pretty damn good first quarter by both squads. I don't know what the hell happened after the first quarter, but all of the whistles from there on out absolutely destroyed any semblance of organized basketball. There were only eight fouls called in the first quarter, and then went to s--t after that.

Her biggest tantrum was when she didn't get the And-1 call she wanted...when the contact clearly happened while she was still dribbling.

I thought the players would adjust to a tighter whistle. So far they have not it seems.

Part of me thinks maybe the league needs to go to a 5 foul limit. But when the opponent can run straight into Caitlin and saddle her with 3 ridiculous fouls then that's no bueno either.

This league as a welfare case has always done whatever the frick it wants and that ain't a changin' anytime soon.

Both were big outbursts but yes, that one did more resemble a tantrum as that would have been a very marginal and-one.

She's got to be coached to watch that as it damages her credibility on her legitimate complaints.

It's been coached...at Iowa they put together video of some of her worst moments and showed it to her, trying to make a difference. The issue is that she just doesn't care.

Problem is this idea of a happy medium doesn't exist, and it sure as f***ing sh** will not exist in the WNBA (at least for the next 8 years or so, until a lot of the veteran players brainwashed by the style of play in this league get old and phase out of the game).

If the refs "let the players play" it will devolve into 50 cat fights instead of 50 personal fouls. If you push back and get them to call more fouls, it slows everything down, people complain anyways because the refs have poor judgment, poor sightlines, and poor instincts, and the players refuse to learn and adjust from all the fouls being called anyways.

The only way to get the refs on the side of the fans is for them to double down on CALLING more fouls, especially with the added benefit of technology now, even at the expense of the game speed. The players will just have to go down kicking and screaming about how they can't live like this playing basketball without being able to hand check and body bump and arm bar and clothesline and eye scratch opposing players.......................................................

And the ones like Caitlin (because she's definitely not the only one) that cry about the refs being imperfect, or in some cases "out to get her" BECAUSE she gives them a reaction every single time, will also have to adjust with the understanding that it's meant to slowly but surely kill the excessive physicality and trash-ketball the WNBA wanted to pride itself on for decades.

I'd buy your statement, EXCEPT she's still getting grabbed and wrapped up coming off all most EVERY screen. SO, what happens to the "calling it tighter" when she has the ball?

At Iowa she could afford to not care. She was the fan and media darling and just about nothing was going to change that.

Hopefully she'll start to see the light that now the unnecessary complaining is working against her. Guess we'll see.

That game last night reminded me of year one the way the defenders were chasing her everywhere on the court with all the grabs and "physicality". They once again acted like she stole all of their boyfriends or something.

So they’re calling 53 fouls in a game but just not for CC? Do you guys realize how ridiculous this all sounds? She shot 12 free throws last night. And don’t tell me she should shoot 20. We’re all huge CC fans here but the objectivity is totally gone from some of you. Everything is everyone else’s fault.

Sorry, but I don't agree. I haven't commented on last nights game specifically, because I didn't see the game, so my comment was in general of the last several games. Countless times she'll go off a screen at the top of the key, and most of the time the defender will have an arm reached around the screener wrapping her arm and pulling on her. I'm sorry if you don't agree, but that's a foul 100% of the time, (and is a 180 from their "freedom of movement" mantra), and they sure aren't calling many of those specific fouls. In truth I think most of the league is operating under the Izzo theory that if you body up and foul most of the time, they can't call them all, and its sure worked for him, wouldn't you say?
