5* EDGE Chris Whithead was a priority recruit for us. Had an OV here this past weekend. Committed to LSU today.
No sense in worrying about it if you aren't willing to open your wallet.5* EDGE Chris Whithead was a priority recruit for us. Had an OV here this past weekend. Committed to LSU today.
Ah, so this is what football has become. We’ve gone from complaining that others are buying teams to saying we aren’t allowed to care about recruiting if we don’t contribute to buying players. No sense in worrying about it if you aren't willing to open your wallet.
Isn't that sort of like the chicken curse?I want so bad the football gods to keep teasing Lane over and over and letting him come within 1 game of the natty all the time but never winning it
You have been bitching and whining about recruiting for years. You have the ability to help but choose not to. I also choose not to contribute but you won't see me complaining. We get what we pay for. To answer your question; yes, this is what football has become.Ah, so this is what football has become. Disagree. It's a combination of both, particularly for USC. If folks like us (big keyboard supporters) aren't willing to contribute, we will continue to struggle. From my understanding, we don't have a lot of rich alumni contributing.I dont think k the recruiting is going to be majorly impacted by the level of giving from this board's members. Its a matter of finding really rich alumni now.

I think we went from 10-15 years ago complaining about the "big conspiracy" of teams buying players (i.e. church donations, parent's car washes being bought, etc.) to now being in the situation where we know teams are buying players but we don't/won't/can't pay to play. I think other than 5* players, recruiting will die and it will all be portal driven, where we are leasing players for a year or two.Ah, so this is what football has become. We’ve gone from complaining that others are buying teams to saying we aren’t allowed to care about recruiting if we don’t contribute to buying players.
It's already become this for top tier teams, particularly in baseball and basketball.I think we went from 10-15 years ago complaining about the "big conspiracy" of teams buying players (i.e. church donations, parent's car washes being bought, etc.) to now being in the situation where we know teams are buying players but we don't/won't/can't pay to play. Not what football has become, it has always been this way. However, now it is out in the open and much more lucrative. You have been bitching and whining about recruiting for years. You have the ability to help but choose not to. I also choose not to contribute but you won't see me complaining. We get what we pay for. Key words, "within budget"So now that these kids have flipped, why not just make a counter offer if we think the kid is worth it and he is within our budget? Isn't that what everyone else is doing?
Some teams, FSU, Miami, Texas Tech, have openly stated that they are trying to buy a championship. I'm not sure I want to be that sort of program. I would have a hard time being completely happy knowing that the reason my team won it all was simply a function of spending more than anyone else.
I would imagine if we were in that position, as soon as the W's started, and we were a regular participant in the CFP, the reservations of "buying" a championship, would dissipate. Some teams, FSU, Miami, Texas Tech, have openly stated that they are trying to buy a championship. Negative recruiting is as old as recruiting itself.I've been reading about supposed negative recruiting occurring against us. Doesn't surprise me in the least. It's always going to happen during the process. That's also what happens when you retain a 4 win season head coach.
UK this year did this in basketball and at one point was in danger of missing the tournament. Waiting until a HS ''star'' proves himself makes perfect sense because we know loyalty is out the window and you get 1 year if you're lucky.I think recruiting HS players hard is a very 2019 move. The kid could turn out to be the next Clowney or he may ride the bench his freshman year at college, get mad, and transfer somewhere else. With a limited budget, I'd probably rather have a player who has proven himselve to be an all-conference-candidate DE at Southern Miss or Utah State than a kid with amazing upside potential but who has never played a college game.

My post was purely factual regarding your bitching and moaning, and your unwillingness to help the cause. My OP was purely factual: a recruit we were pursuing has signed elsewhere. I gave no commentary on it.
But noted. Big Brother has declared we are only allowed to say good and positive things about recruiting.
I love this class. Studs across the board. Promises to be a historic class that transforms us into a blue blood. Every single one of our recruits could be starting at any program in the nation next year. We will be LOADED!

I'm not sure he's ever made a point. Yes, it's true, teams outright buy players now.Viennacock makes good points. I'm one of those he points to regarding "unwillingness to help the cause" (which I assume he means contributing to NIL). He is being fair. I do give generously though to a dozen charities (will be 13 next time when I contribute to the Remote Area Medical charity). I just happen to believe when I'm all said and done, I won't be judged by how many football games my beloved Gamecocks win. If I'm wrong, we are all in big trouble.![]()
NIL has made me temper my expectations. If we are honest with ourselves, we would admit that NIL is and always will be a huge disadvantage to Gamecock football. And if we continue to be honest with ourselves, we would admit that Carolina football recruiting has never been a consistent juggernaut, Our most successful Head Coaches here excelled at strategy, tactics, organization and motivation. They did not have consistent great years here. But, they gave us our most successful seasons. The Head Coaches who were reputed to be recruiting stars (Bell, Woods, Scott, Muschamp) were unmitigated failures here. If you disagree, that's fine. We will just agree to disagree.
Yes, this is what recruiting has become, especially for the elite players, then even when you have them on the roster, the staff has to continually recruit them to retain them. Started with the coaches and now the players always looking for the next big opportunity/ paycheck, but again it started with coaches.Ah, so this is what football has become. We’ve gone from complaining that others are buying teams to saying we aren’t allowed to care about recruiting if we don’t contribute to buying players.
Spot on.Recruiting was doing pretty good after Beamer’s first crap class. But the magic seems to be disappearing. If this class falls below 30, and we have another losing season, I think the fans turn on him. That said, I sort of believe he needs at least 7-8 wins this year.

We're allowed to care, but it is foolish to care about it too much. But we aren't allowed to care about recruiting any longer?
