I’ve watched every USA World Cup game since 2006 and that felt like easily the best game we’ve played in a WC in the last 20 years.
I can’t remember a game against a decent opponent that we’ve absolutely dominated like this. We made Paraguay look like amateurs. It wasn’t even competitive.

Bruce I like you. But you really should stick to posting about sports you know something about.
Y'all can be upset by my opinion all you want. Not gonna change my mind.

Millions of people love mayonnaise. I can't stand it and I can tell people I don't like it. Doesn't make me wrong no matter what others think.

A QB giving a hard count to make the defense jump.
They should make a rule in the NFL that a receiver can't run past a defensive back before the QB let's go of the ball.

Or maybe in the NBA you can't run a fast break if the defense doesn't want to follow you down court.

Both of those plays allows for an easier score.

Nope, you’re wrong. Mayonnaise is delicious.

You shouldn’t argue with clear facts.

I don’t understand why people will comment in a thread about a sport simply to say how much they dislike the sport. Happens in every single NBA thread too. If you don’t like the sport, the thread is not for you. There’s no reason to comment about how much you don’t like the sport that is being talked about in the thread.
They’re the same people who feel compelled to tell you how horrible your favorite food, restaurant, sports team, movie, TV show, actor, writer, candy bar, food, vacation spot or any other thing is. And it doesn’t have to be your favorite. They just need to find out you kind of like something.

Has it been tried more like hockey with their blue line? Has it been tried like I suggested that 2 passes nullifies it?

That play the USA player was not trying to get an advantage the defender moved upfield to cause our guy to be behind him. I just don't like it.
It has a high probability of making strikers more lazy and trust me you don’t want to make “play me the ball” any more lazy!

Nobody’s upset wit you opinion. It’s just wrong. The game would fall apart without the offside rule. It’s a common opinion among people who don’t know anything about soccer. It seems like it would be a good idea if you don’t watch soccer. Big as you watch & understand what’s going on you realize it’s really a terrible idea.

If you played without offsides then you would have strikers just camped out at each goal with defenders draped on them. The midfield would be just wide open long kicks back and forth. It would look like total chaos and once teams and coaches adjusted to the rule change scoring wouldn’t change much either.

ETA: Hockey has close to the same rule as soccer. Illegal formation penalties in football and three second violations in basketball are sort of in the ballpark. Infield fly rule in baseball too. All these rules are there to equalize each side so that there’s not an unfair advantage.

And Paraguay isn’t just trash, or they haven’t been recently. They picked up wins over both Brazil and Argentina in WC Qualifying. Finished with the same amount of points in qualification as Brazil.

It's not. Those two are positive plays. Someone is trying to make a play. NOT playing defense is taking advantage of a rule. It's more like guys that leans into an inside pitch, which I also hate.
Or maybe an intentional walk. Or not catching a fly ball to double up the baserunner? Ban intentional walks? Stop requiring runners to tag up?

I would be okay with hockey's offiside. They define a distance from the goal where goals are more likely to happen and limit incursion into that area that the puck or person with the puck must be in the zone first. Soccer with its floating offside line that can be way outside where it is reasonable to score I just don't like. It's too much. It hinders scoring in a sport that needs more offense. There were only 8 shots on goal in USA v Paraguay game in 100 minutes. USA only had 5 and it just happens that 4 went in. The rest of y'all are just wrong. Doesn't matter if millions of people like it as it is. Most of these games will be bereft of scoring opportunities.

Good lord man. No one would ever score with a hockey type offside rule. As for scoring it not like baseball is just loaded with it. Average MLB game has 8.9 runs in 3 hours. Average top flight European soccer has 3.0 goals in 2 hours, so about half the scoring rate of baseball. NFl football has 4.9 touchdowns in 3 hours.
Things soccer should do to increase scoring that would be much more effective than changing offside rule would be to increase size of goal by 10% both vertically & horizontally and come up with something between a red card & a yellow card for deliberately fouling a player in a “fast break” situation.

Like the NBA clear path foul. If you foul on a fast break it’s a technical foul
It’s the thing that frustrates me most about soccer. Team gets a good fast break opportunity creating a lot of excitement. And someone grabs the back of the jersey pulls him back & stops it. And just receives a pretty meaningless yellow card. Got to have a stronger penalty than that. I’d make it a penalty kick no matter where in the field it happened.

Yes…

Put some teeth in it, so people won’t argue about offsides…

I generally don't.

So why then is the offside call delayed? Once it happens you aren't allowed to score. All than can happen is a change of possession. And as for flow, that goal and review of the offside took longer than if you just stopped the posession.

It’s delayed to give VAR a chance to overrule it if the offense does score & the call was wrong. Good idea on very close calls. But linesmen routinely delay obvious offside calls which drives me 17ing crazy.
