Virginia hasn't even started selling basketball tickets for the upcoming season yet.
Re: Virginia single game ticket availability: I cannot say for certain that this will be the case this coming year, but.. Historically, practically all seats for Virginia basketball games, not reserved for students, are sold as season tickets. Depending on the previous year's record and expectations for the coming year, there is often a waiting list for those season tickets. As such, a hefty contribution to to the VAF (Virginia Athletic Fund) can be a requisite for buying tickets. This may be why you are seeing claims that the tickets are sold out. There may already be a waiting list. Single game tickets, when available, are typically the result of students not picking up the entire allotment reserved for them. This usually happens during academic breaks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the mid-semester spring break) and the Thanksgiving and Christmas matchups are often "buy games". Those tickets, when available, normally become so a couple of weeks before the game in question. I would expect all the student tickets for the Kentucky game to be claimed.
So, since Kentucky will also have an allotment of tickets reserved for them, that will be one option for you. Contact the UofK athletic department about availability. And, if demand is high enough, there may be tickets to be purchased on the secondary market, but I imagine they will come at a steep price. Lastly, at game time, there are usually a few ticket holders who arrive with fewer fannies than for which they have seats in JPJ, and there is a cadre of individuals buying and selling those unused passes. Some simply trust to luck and show up in the parking lot hoping to get one. As I said, things may have changed, but that is the way it has been in the past. Good luck!

Edit: If you do acquire tickets, wear comfortable shoes. A tour of the Grounds should be on your list of things to do, but, regardless, even for games parking in Charlottesville can be an adventure. Prepare for some walking.
