Typical of nanny state nonsense that does the opposite of what they purportedly wanted to do:

But in practice, the replacement bags are thicker plastic products that require far more material and energy to manufacture.

A 2024 study found that while fewer bags are used overall, total plastic consumption tripled as shoppers shifted to thicker reusable bags. These bags require more than 15 times the plastic to make as traditional plastic film bags and generate more than five times the greenhouse gas emissions during manufacturing.

Just as importantly, these bags cannot be recycled. On average, New Jersey shoppers reuse them only two to three times before they end up in a landfill. Most readers can probably remember a time when they forgot to bring their “reusable” bags to the grocery store and had to buy more

The idiots where I lived started charging per plastic bag…it lasted 8 days. 😆 I have many uses for plastic bags and that is unlikely to ever change.

Nope. I stopped using plastic/paper bags years ago. I use these, can roll up one into a pocket or carry the whole pod in for a bigger shopping trip. They can be washed & dried & are extremely strong.

Still made from plastic and they use 20x the amount of plastic. Many people use them ine time which is why NJ now consumes 3x as much plastic for bags as before the bag ban.

I still have some one use plastic bags left, they are easy to keep in a pocket when going shopping. I was wondering if anyone else still had some left from saving them up when they were legal, or if you used them all up.
So the single use bags are not single use and many people use them more than once.

Yes groceries…and small garbage can liners and house plant litter and so many uses! 🕺

I have hundreds of these new bags now filling up my house all from trips to pickup groceries at wegmans. They charge you and give you bags every time. There is no recycling of those bags at the store and now they fill up my house..it’s awful and something should be fixed about it as only solution is for me to throw them in my own recycling and such a waste

They charge you if you bring your own bags? And do they have self scan lanes for you to charge yourself?

If you have extra bags at home please donate them to a local food bank instead of throwing them away. Easy solution for keeping them out of landfills. People can then bring them to grocery stores or food banks. The Wegmans black bags can be washed and reused.

Please give them to a local food pantry or thrift store. Purchasing bags to give to the public is an added expense that could be better used elsewhere.

I think that is an excellent idea in theory. In practice, I doubt most people would go out of their way to do this. What would work is if the grocery stores arranged collection points for the bags, or allowed volunteers to periodically collect them outside of stores to bring them to food pantries and thrift stores.

Wow, where have all these people in this thread gone? Have they been recycled? Decided not to bother anymore with these boards, or, other? Just being nosey? Seriously? Thoughts?

My local Shop Rite has gone to using canvas tote bags. They are strong as hell, and can be used for a million things. Of course for each order you get it's a $12.95 fee for bags, and the order.
