Guess this came across my IG algorithm because I watch workout stuff and obviously Miss State stuff. This guy is Cameron Dietz (coachcam10).

If you're into this sort of thing go check out some of the videos. Not calling him out specifically because 80% of these S&C coaches do this trendy stuff. But what are they expecting to get out of these band jumps, light speed lifts, etc.? Some of that is OK, and certainly a good aerobic workout but they'd be better off just doing active baseball drills. They aren't getting stronger dancing around with this stuff and if anything, adding weight to jumps and such wears out joints and promotes injury. And yeah I know college athletes look good but it's because they are elite athletes already. Anything they do is going to make them look good.

Just think this new age data bro functional training is a tremendous detriment to strength potential. It's actually something MSU could exploit if we'd do it right. Need to really be pushing the heavy lifting movement patterns and do all this cardiovascular jumping stuff in actual sport specific practice. I mean this other stuff is a warmup, it's not a workout. And should be done with no weight.

Again I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing only this coach because it's the thing right now. Shaud Williams does it as well. And I appreciate that he posts the content. But I'm spotting very few things these guys are doing that are truly adding, not just simply exhibiting, strength/power.

I’m sure they do stuff for strength as well
I don't think they do nearly as much as you think. Football does most because they have to avoid injuries, but they still do a lot of pointless stuff too. And there's no excuse for the number of injuries baseball has for a non-contact sport. They'd be wise to do the heavy lifts like football.

but explosiveness is hugely important for athletes.
I agree, but it's very difficult to make significant marked increases by training it. You CAN, however, get stronger which directly adds to power output.

That is why I am saying that this type of lifting is only displaying/exhibiting what is already there.

Correct. All this crap does is display what athletes can do because they are athletes. The one underlying factor for balance, strength, agility and "explosiveness" is your muscles which is guess what?, the very component of human anatomy that gives you all of that and athletes are athletes because of genetics. The one thing you can consistently improve across all humans regardless of natural athletic ability is strength.

Baseball players look leaner with more emphasis on quickness and speed. Some of those guys from the 70s looked more like softball players, bulked up mashers who wouldn’t run unless it was a home run trot.

Speaking as someone who can bench over 300 lbs and is stronger than probably 99% of men… FAR too much emphasis is put on “functional strength” and stuff like you describe. It doesn’t help performance much at all. It’s all about slow and steady discipline and far superior plant protein. Don’t need fancy equipment, trainers, specific drills, etc… just do a few hours of pure strength exercises a few times a week and focus on plants for your protein source and you’ll blow away competition.

Just out of curiosity, what plants do you suggest for protein? Genuinely curious.

I use pure plant protein powder in oat milk every morning, grind it up with flax seed, kale, and spinach. Truvani is a really good one. It tastes much better than it sounds and the ingredients are very clean. Eat barley, lentils, farro, quinoa, and hummus frequently. Strength and power will go through the roof and you’ll pass most people by quickly. You’ll also experience a huge burst of energy and won’t “tire down” if you do it right. It’s mind blowing.

I try to eat a decent amount of protein but find it hard sometimes without stuffing myself with meat.

The energy thing is a big one for me.

It’s a process and a lot of trial and error. You will see so many positive changes it will blow your mind. I completely get it, it’s not easy in this society. Tons of info AND misinformation out there on it.

When you start outdoing EVERYONE in the gym and see others all winded and tired doing the same stuff… I promise it will ALL make sense.

I can say confidently it is NOT for everyone. There are a lot of folks out there who are extremely ignorant and are happy to be that way. Pay them no mind.

I'm not gonna blow anyone away in the gym b/c i'm not gonna put the time in for that.

i will do 100 to 150 pushups every other day and some other in home exercises though!

The lean look is a myth. Strength doesn’t make you slower. Perhaps if you go after it like a bodybuilder maybe, with a bunch of unnatural isolation.

Those old school guys had issues with diet more than anything. Heck they likely didn’t even lift weights at all. That didn’t start becoming mainstream until Nebraska.
