Way OT but a somewhat iconic Metro area business

Just like everything else along County Line. Damn shame.

My wife used to work that Rhea Lana shlt in the old Toys R Us twice a year or so. They had to have friggin security for it, I could not believe it had gotten that bad around there.
Based on your information aren’t you a boomer? And don’t you bash boomers?

🤔

LOL every location mentioned for old Jackson is PRIME compared to Smith Brothers Body Shop on Farish Street. They've been there for decades do great work .
Smith Brothers does incredible work at very reasonable prices. They repaired my Forerunner 3-4 years ago after I had an encounter with a deer on The Natchez Trace.

Well, the bulk of the people that work / own Lakeland yard and Garden are State folk.....Alot of good folk work there.
I slightly take the comment back but dammit I can not stand vulcher salesmen. If I need something, I’ll go find somebody but until then stay out of the way.

Carter's Jewelers has been at 711 High Street close to the State Street intersection since 1946 although they have had a Going Out of Business Sale about every 6 months for the last 20 years.
The son and current owner is a friend of mine. When dad was retiring they ran retirement sales constantly for 6 months. I finally asked Jay if his dad was ever going to retire. He just shrugged his shoulders and said even I’m not sure.

Last time I lived in the metro was 1974. I loved the Play Pen toy store on I55 with the circus tent awning. It was there forever. Not sure if it has survived, but it was sure iconic to me.
And, of course, the Jackson Mall.

He’s probably not a boomer if his wife was working a Rhea Lana sale. I’m guessing you don’t know what that is.
I admittedly don’t but it sounds boomer esque.

I’m willing to bet he’s 50 plus. Which isn’t a boomer but it’s pretty damn close to be whining about boomers when I can almost guarantee his life is better due to some boomers.

Hutto's is treasured by all, and they don't overstock their perishable inventory.......and all income levels, races, ethnicities.....love "mamma hut's dirt. I grew up somewhere at some point on Ellis Ave every weekend (original Sam's location, several great restaurants, Eliss Isle Cinema, holiday inn for sundae lunch), lot's of family memories in that area.......and it makes me sad to see the destruction that a poorly run city can allow to happen.
Are you old enough to remember if Hutto's had a different name prior to being Hutto's? I remember going there often as a very small boy and have fuzzy memories of a name change, but I can't remember if that's real or not.

in between going out of business they buy discounted inventory of other jewelry stores going out of business. The bargains are hard to believe.

WOW.....I did not know that, but I would say it was c. 1976/1977 when I started remembering stuff, AND ONLY b/c both of my parents were self employed, and kinda always "networking" so as a kid I got to know alot of "owners" and thought I was big time......I remember but Hutto's only, but we probably went to the original Callaway's over behind Primos Northgate @ Meadowbrook & State street.

Be careful saying that on this board, since Chuck (who runs it) and Steve (his brother, a former Ole Miss player) are two of the biggest Rebels on earth. Some people might think they might all of a sudden be too *snooty*

I was born in 1976 but I can remember going there with my parents when I would have been 3 or 4. Like @She Mate Me said, I think Hinds Nursery and Garden was it. I also remember the Howard Brothers store on the northwest corner of Ellis and 80, that building is gone now and there's an Autozone there. I also remember another home improvement store whose name has completely departed my brain, that was located on the south side of McDowell Road just east of the train tracks near the concrete or asphalt plant, whatever that was.

Well, I didn't ask.

I have done business there for over 30 years now, and I have always been treated well, and sure, there are a few bad apples, but, alot of good folks

Sorry you have not had a good experience
Sorry, I was being sarcastic and doing a poor job of showing it. The idea that the people out there resemble the Ole Miss stereotype is funny to me. I've had great experiences with them as well.

AHHHH.....I see.......

Well, just as an effort to encourage you, your sarcasm sucks!!! like really bad!!

Above said, I obviously need new glasses as I am just now seeing your name ends in "reb"

The fact that you are a delta fella and a reb, pretty much squarely nails you for a stuck up, obnoxious, loafer wearing, AT4 driving douche

Was it the Green Derby or the Brown Derby at that intersection as well?

Yes, the Green Derby was on the southeast corner (where the Wendys is now)....Ramada on the southwest, Howard Bros on the northwest and a grocery store behind some banks and stuff on the northeast.

The Ramada served a damn good club sandwich with a trip to the salad bar. I miss that.
