Carter's Jewelers has been at 711 High Street close to the State Street intersection since 1946 although they have had a Going Out of Business Sale about every 6 months for the last 20 years.

LOL every location mentioned for old Jackson is PRIME compared to Smith Brothers Body Shop on Farish Street. They've been there for decades do great work .
While Brent's drugs is not the drugstore / pharmacy / grill it was back in the day.....it is still there, and frankly, they have improved and are doing a pretty good job as a restaurant. pretty good crowd there daily
Smith Brothers does incredible work at very reasonable prices. They repaired my Forerunner 3-4 years ago after I had an encounter with a deer on The Natchez Trace.

I slightly take the comment back but dammit I can not stand vulcher salesmen. If I need something, I’ll go find somebody but until then stay out of the way.
The son and current owner is a friend of mine. When dad was retiring they ran retirement sales constantly for 6 months. I finally asked Jay if his dad was ever going to retire. He just shrugged his shoulders and said even I’m not sure.
Last time I lived in the metro was 1974. I loved the Play Pen toy store on I55 with the circus tent awning. It was there forever. Not sure if it has survived, but it was sure iconic to me.
And, of course, the Jackson Mall.

Are you old enough to remember if Hutto's had a different name prior to being Hutto's? I remember going there often as a very small boy and have fuzzy memories of a name change, but I can't remember if that's real or not.
in between going out of business they buy discounted inventory of other jewelry stores going out of business. The bargains are hard to believe.
WOW.....I did not know that, but I would say it was c. 1976/1977 when I started remembering stuff, AND ONLY b/c both of my parents were self employed, and kinda always "networking" so as a kid I got to know alot of "owners" and thought I was big time......I remember but Hutto's only, but we probably went to the original Callaway's over behind Primos Northgate @ Meadowbrook & State street.

I was born in 1976 but I can remember going there with my parents when I would have been 3 or 4. Like @She Mate Me said, I think Hinds Nursery and Garden was it. I also remember the Howard Brothers store on the northwest corner of Ellis and 80, that building is gone now and there's an Autozone there. I also remember another home improvement store whose name has completely departed my brain, that was located on the south side of McDowell Road just east of the train tracks near the concrete or asphalt plant, whatever that was.
I totally remember that Howard Brothers!!......I grew up west Jackson, and then North Jackson, so Mcdowell was not in my rounds of doing stuff with dad on the weekends.....Learned to swim at Shady Oaks Country club, and ate mini a hamburger there

I have done business there for over 30 years now, and I have always been treated well, and sure, there are a few bad apples, but, alot of good folks

Yes, the Green Derby was on the southeast corner (where the Wendys is now)....Ramada on the southwest, Howard Bros on the northwest and a grocery store behind some banks and stuff on the northeast.
The Ramada served a damn good club sandwich with a trip to the salad bar. I miss that.
