Opposing coach pitch to Momcilovic?

So we know UK has the most money to give, most playing time, allegedly a shooter-friendly system. Those are pretty stacked odds. How would you guys, in the shoes of an opposing coach, try to win the recruitment? Basically it has to come down to "this is why an extra $M now won't be worth it for your future".

I would say:
- Koby Brea -- Pope's headline sharpshooter -- dipped over 6% in 3PT % (with more shot attempts). Despite the hype and desire to run a "30 3s a game" system, Pope's teams don't really run any action for shooters and play sloppy. Meanwhile, here's film for sets we run, and we'd get you open like this, this, and this.
- The same Koby Brea got selected 41st overall and plays 5 min a game. If that's what you wanted, you would have stayed in the draft this year.
- Show video from the Vandy game where Oweh walked with the ball just so he could keep yelling at Moreno.
- Highlight players that you've coached that have received second contracts in the league. Offer to call them up on the spot and let them talk. That $1-2M in NIL you're missing out on now is nothing to what you'll miss out on to set you up for life.

Basically play up the "I have helped guys not only get to the league, but shine there" card. That's one thing that elite recruits all want and the same area where Pope is highly deficient (as of now). Obviously all the points I listed won't work for every coach.

We do not know that UK has the most money to give. Acting like Pope somehow held Koby Brea back is absurd. He was lacking in athleticism and was not aggressive enough but we did see improvement from him in some areas as the season progressed. You think his drop in 3 pt FG % could have something to do with facing way better defense? A coach can only enhance a players NBA prospects so much if they just aren't that level of talent. It is not like Pope has had guys forecasted with an extremely high upside who have failed to reach their potential.

Totally agree that Kelsey can't play the "clout" card as successfully. He has Brown being drafted high (probably), but Brown and Momcilovic are not anywhere near the same type of player.

I Googled it, and Kelsey did work with Chris Paul, Jeff Teague, and Al Aminu, among others. But I don't think his role was actively working with players back then? I have no idea. But if a guy like CP3 vouched for him, it would carry weight.

Lloyd has a more credible modern pipeline -- he was top asst and directly responsible for bringing in talent for Few. He got Kispert drafted in the 1st, which could have huge influence on a guy like MM. I'm with you, no clue if he has a stud wing from his AZ head coaching tenure. Given the talent that flows through there, my guess would be yes?

Appreciate the response.

As an objective observer, I agree it's a ridiculous claim that Pope held Brea back. However, I am talking from the perspective of a sales pitch one would give to combat the (seemingly) insurmountable advantages UK has.

As for the $$, nobody knows, agree, but I sure as hell hope the reports are accurate. Pope needs any advantage possible.

There is no doubt negative and dishonest narratives go on in recruiting. I would expect you and I as UK fans would seek to discredit this stuff and support our coach who appears to be considerably more honest than most.

We make fun of Pope for the motha effas thing.....so no offense but if a bunch of older fans even thought that was goofy sounding...which it was..then Imagine what these young players think.

Do players really run to a coach that says motha effas? I get this is a small thing that we laugh at but in reality it's a big deal to have a coach like that. In a bad way. He gets made fun of. Players don't want to play for a big sissy sounding coach. Who would?

I would say "Log on and read Rupp Rafters and see how the fanbase talks about their own coach and kids. Pay special attention to past game days"

They should just show recruits this board with all of your lies. Show them how they’re required to sign over their NIL rights according to this board, how they’re not allowed to do outside NIL deals according to this board, oh and “the restrictions” according to this board, all those restrictions that you lie about but can’t say what they are. You use the words of UK “fans” like you to negative recruit UK.

This post seems better suited for an Arizona message board.

Sitting around trying to think of reasons why a recruit should NOT choose UK seems a fairly odd way for a UK fan to spend his free time.

Honestly if UK has a decent amount more money nothing they can say. Mom is a mercenary like most all these guys.

And all of us in our careers. Money is why we work for the most part unless u are living off an inheritance or won the lotto. Most people cant afford to do what they love or take a less stressful lower paying job in their field.

He will have a lottery pick after this year and wherever Conwell goes to talk about now. Hepburn wasn't even projected to be drafted before transferring to UofL. Its not Cal numbers but getting 3 players drafted in your first 2 years at a D1 school isn't to bad.

I mean pope will have the same amount of people drafted broski. I know Kobe Brea got drafted, I’m pretty sure Amari Williams got drafted and JQ will be drafted

Love the predictable reactions from all the haters. Part of negotiation (maybe the biggest part) is knowing what the other guy is going to say. Let's hope the coaching staff is more prepared and less soft than you guys.

Williams was drafted 46. I dont know how much credit you can give Pope for JQ since he only played about 50 minutes under him.
I agree about JQ. I think it boils down to Kelsey and pope equal on the amount of people they put in the league but I think popes talent like Amari Williams and Kobe Brea are better than Chucky Hepburn

For some reason Pope is having a hard time getting the top recruits to come and play for him. Even throwing the biggest bags of money out there isn't working. His coaching isn't any worse than Kelsey's or a lot of other coaches, and he seems like a decent person. I can't figure out the disconnect.

This. Plus if you put together all the reports, he is causing the issues himself way more than opposing coaches. Lost guys we had in the bag and were the highest bidder.

So the best strategy would be to just wait and hope Pope hasnt corrected whatever major issues he has causing him to flop on the final push.

I know St. John's is out of the running on Momci, but if Pope had whiffed on Momci (still possible), I would have liked to have seen Momci play for St. John's.

Ellis
Jackson
Yessofou
Momci
Prey

That would have been a fascinating lineup. Your four and five can step out and let your 2/3 cook on slashes to the rim.

My concern is the SEC is the most physical, switch‑heavy, guard‑dominant league in the country. He’d be hunted every possession and his stock could drop. Unfortunately the ACC being the 4th or 5th best league fits his game better…and could raise his stock.

How is Louisville even in the running? Weren't we told it was UK and St. John's with UL a distant third and not a factor? Someone here seemingly in the know assured us of that. How are they even in the running?

Some of the fans are worse than opposing coaches are with what they say. Agents and NIL continue to kill college basketball. Everybody saw it coming and it’s dying a slow death. Now the players can have their cake and eat it too. The players education should come out of the NIl contracts, there has to be some kind of equalizer to where nobody can just make this kind of money while playing sports in college. Look for more schools to drop more sports programs because this kind of crap can’t go on forever.

It is fair that colleges players get paid in the revenue generating sports. I like the new 5 yr rule. I love your idea that the players receiving NIL should be required to pay their college expenses.

If they try to put an over-all NIL/rev cap in place…they will get sued. It is a free-market. No one is forcing these colleges/collectives to over pay for college players. They only earn what the market is willing to pay for their skills…just like coaches.

Remember, Momcilovic and Co. were down by 12 in the 2nd round last tournament, and UK had all the momentum and was about to extend it out further, then the dreaded 16 minute mark came, and Pope hit the starters with his signature move, and pulled them for a quick icing, and the rest is history!

I’m sure Momci was paying attention, and I hope during his recruitment, he asked Pope about it, because the last thing he wants, is starting a game 4/4 from 3, only to be pulled for whatever it is Hawthorne does!😩

Pope can spend whatever he wants.
He just doesn't want to spend 50 million? A 100 million? 500 million? A billion? 10 billion? 50 billion?

There is a point where money gets really absurdly loud.

I'm pretty sure for 209 million Stokes would count his loot on Instagram from Lexington.
Shoot, I bet the house that offer locks him in all four years but if not a billion would do the trick.

No, there is a real limit and it isn't so high as to be clear of competitive situations with some programs or even so out of context that some less resourced schools can't snag a guy either.

Anything he wants would mean being able to get at least some lottery picks to put their names into the portal instead of the draft.

Their agents and families wouldn't stop pushing them to do so at some ridiculous point.
