I believe they had the highest per capita enlistment rate of any state (not absolute numbers obviously). Iowa troops were a big factor in the thick of it at Shiloh and in other Western theater battles. Fun fact: my great x3 grandfather was an Irish immigrant who settled in Iowa, left several young kids at home to enlist in his thirties, gave the traitors a whatfer in the Vicksburg campaign, then came back home to raise his family and lived to see the 20th century.Behind door #2, Iowa was an afterthought in the Civil War. Least as far as I know.
